2017 Predictions -- from AI and Machine Learning to Security, Mobile, IT
Employment Landscape and M&A; Activity
Specifically, in 2017 we predict that machine learning will show up in new
and exciting ways. Some people believe that machine learning is the same as
artificial intelligence, but what you are really looking at is this concept
of being able to be more human with your IT infrastructure. At the Microsoft
Build Event last year developers were shown the concept of bots being able to
write code that can interact with you in the communication channel you use -
be it Skype, email, or something different. The ultimate concept is that the
infrastructure IT you use will have the ability to interface with an
intelligent back-end system that benefits you - the everyday user. These
interfaces are now exposed to developers and, in turn, are being embedded
into business ... (more)
As more organizations try to determine where best to deploy their limited
budgets to support data and analytics initiatives, they realize a need to
ascertain the financial value of their data and analytics - which means basic
economic concepts are coming into play. While many of you probably took an
economics class in college not too long ago, some more "seasoned" readers may
be rusty.
The starting point for this topic began with a blog that I wrote several
months ago titled "Determining the Economic Value of Data" and this key
observation that started that conversation:
Data is an unusual currency. Most currencies exhibit a one-to-one
transactional relationship. For example, the quantifiable value of a dollar
is considered to be finite - it can only be used to buy one item or service
at a time, or a person can only do one paid job at a time. But measuring the

How valuable would it be to know everything about your customer's
interactions with your competition? Creating a 360-degree customer view is
considered the holy grail of customer intelligence, and you can create it,
today.
Would you like to know how much they're spending, when they're spending, why
they're buying with the competition and not you, what drives their purchase
behavior and what steps you can take to capture a greater share of wallet.
This consumer intelligence is fundamentally obtained and analyzed through the
creation of a 360-degree customer profile platform, which your organization
can create without a lot of effort and without hiring expensive consultants
or data scientists.
For many organizations, creating a 360-degree platform which they can feed
data into can represent the largest challenge. How do we collect the data?
Where will it come from? H... (more)
HomeKit, Brillo, Alljoyn...Oh My! Seeking the Wizard of IoT
Things are changing so quickly in IoT that it would take a wizard to predict
which ecosystem will gain the most traction. In order for IoT to reach its
potential, smart devices must be able to work together. Today, there are a
slew of interoperability standards being promoted by big names to make this
happen: HomeKit, Brillo and Alljoyn.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Adam Justice, vice president and general
manager of Grid Connect, will review what happens when smart devices don't
work together, and will look at each standard in detail, highlighting
strengths and weaknesses. He will also look at whether standards can
co-exist, and what it would take to make this happen.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and
enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices -
computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by
2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several
decades.

DevOps - Operations Pain in Data Management
Updating DevOps to the latest production data slows down your development
cycle. Probably it is due to slow, inefficient conventional storage and
associated copy data management practices.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, Dhiraj Sehgal, in Product
and Solution at Tintri, will talk about DevOps and cloud-focused storage to
update hundreds of child VMs (different flavors) with updates from a master
VM in minutes, saving hours or even days in each development cycle. He will
also discuss how the "Ops" side of DevOps is ... (more)
The mad dash to connect virtually every noun to the internet or the Internet
of Things is creating a massive M2M network for all the devices, systems,
sensors and actuators to connect & communicate on the Internet.
With that, they need a communications protocol to understand each other. One
of those is Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT). MQTT is a “subscribe
and publish” messaging protocol designed for lightweight machine-to-machine
(or IoT) communications.
In this episode of Lightboard Lessons, I light up how MQTT works.

Digital Transformation in the Insurance Industry
By Omed Habib
The insurance industry is well aware that digital transformation is coming,
even if some CIOs can’t really say what their individual companies will
look like at the end of it all. In a survey of thousands of C-level execs
around the world, insurance came in among the top five industries that are
most likely to see “moderate to massive” digital disruption within the
next 12 months. Only 20 percent of business leaders felt that they had the
talent they needed to transform the enterprise, though. Here’s a closer
look at what’s coming next in the exciting new era of software-defined
insurance companies.
The Growth of the Insurance Model
The basic business model of the insurance industry hasn’t changed much
since Edward Lloyd opened his coffee shop for seafaring folk in London in
1688. In the decades after Sh... (more)

Guest post by Intellyx Principal Analyst Charles Araujo
Once again, we find ourselves at the dawn of a new year.
And many would say, not a moment too soon. With a series of tumultuous
elections around the world and an unusual number of celebrity passings, it's
been a rough year.
But there is at least one bright spot from 2016: Intellyx's digital
transformation prognostications were close to spot on!
As is our tradition, each year we review last year's predictions and make all
new fresh ones! This year, it is my turn to review Jason's 2016 predictions
and let you know what I see happening in the coming year.
A Look Back on a Year of Inflection Points

Enterprise DevOps Journey, The Things No One Told Me...
When you focus on a journey from up-close, you look at your own technical and
cultural history and how you changed it for the benefit of the customer. This
was our starting point: too many integration issues, 13 SWP days and very
long cycles. It was evident that in this fast-paced industry we could no
longer afford this reality. We needed something that would take us beyond
reducing the development lifecycles, CI and Agile methodologies. We made a
fundamental difference, even changed our culture.

@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video.
