Cloud computing is now being embraced by a majority of enterprises of all
sizes. Yesterday's debate about public vs. private has transformed into the
reality of hybrid cloud: a recent survey shows that 74% of enterprises have a
hybrid cloud strategy. Meanwhile, 94% of enterprises are using some form of

Hard Choices Are Required When Adopting a Cloud Operating Model
When was the last time you’ve ever heard anyone say “IT Applications &
Operations”? Frankly, in my 30+ year career in IT, I don’t believe I’ve
ever heard anyone use this term. The typical term we hear is IT
Infrastructure & Operations. These two go together like Peanut Butter and
Jelly, which tells us a lot about how we view the field of IT.
For those that may not be familiar with the role of IT Operations, Joe
Hertvik does a great job here of describing IT Operations Management as
someone engaged in the role of providing this service to the business. As you
can see it’s very interesting how he specifically addresses the gap between
responsibilities regarding IT Applications and IT Operations as a Venn
diagram in which there is no overlap.
However, as we progress from a pre-Cloud Operating Model world t... (more)
The Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), sponsor of the IoTivity open source
project, and AllSeen Alliance, which provides the AllJoyn® open source IoT
framework, today announced that the two organizations’ boards have approved
a merger under the OCF name and bylaws. This merger will advance
interoperability between connected devices from both groups, enabling the
full operating potential of IoT and representing a significant step towards a
connected ecosystem.
The newly merged groups will collaborate on future OCF specifications, as
well as the IoTivity and AllJoyn open source projects. The expanded OCF board
of directors will consist of executives from a wide array of leading
companies: AB Electrolux, Arçelik A.S., ARRIS International plc, CableLabs,
Canon, Inc., Cisco Systems, Inc., GE Digital, Haier, Intel, LG Electronics,

Three months after publicly starting down the road to imprint its NDA on the
cloud by establishing a large-scale open source cloud platform called
OpenStack free for anybody to use, Rackspace Hosting, its BFF NASA and a
reportedly growing OpenStack community made their first official code drop
Thursday.
The milestone is called Austin - they're doing this alphabetically so
presumably they have a ways to go - and it includes the all-important Amazon
EC2-challenging OpenStack Compute provisioning engine that's supposed to
blend the best of the Rackspace Cloud Servers widgetry that underlies its
public cloud offering with NASA's own home-made Nebula cloud platform.
OpenStack Compute, which has commanded most of the work these last few
months, is the engine that provisions virtual machines complements of either
Xen or KVM and basically supplies the glue that holds a clo... (more)
CloudOpen 2014 – Mixing Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail
Here’s the presentation I gave at the Linux Foundation’s CloudOpen in
Dusseldorf on October 13, 2014 titled Mixing Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail
Add two parts virtualization, one part orchestration add a little networking
shake and pour. Unfortunately cloud computing isn’t that easy but then
again not all clouds are the same and tastes may vary.
This talk will discuss how the varying open source technologies like
OpenStack, Docker, LXC and others can be mixed together to make something
that appeals to the needs of a wide variety of users.
There’s also no problem in abstaining from building your own cloud but
still benefiting from the open source tooling to maximize the benefits of the
public cloud.

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

To the President of Syria, Mr. and Mrs. Bashar al-Assad
Mr. and Mrs. President Bashar al-Assad:
At the tender age of 17 months my severely ill daughter Sofia, an American
citizen, was abducted by her mother on Monday, July 26, in Istanbul, Turkey,
and taken to Syria.
Fox News: ▸ video ▸ story
I was informed yesterday by Sofia's mother that she will not be coming back
to the United States nor will she allow Sofia to return home.
Sofia has been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that requires
immediate treatment in the United States. It was scheduled to start on July
27, 2010, in New Jersey, the day after her abduction and was supposed to last
until she reaches the age of 3.
Any delay in the urgently needed treatment will result in a life-long
disability for Sofia and make her dependent for the whole of her a... (more)
The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is focused on improving the
security of software. Their mission is to make software security visible, so
that individuals and organizations worldwide can make informed decisions
about true software security risks and their OWASP Top 10 provides a list of
the 10 Most Critical Security Risks. For each risk it provides a description,
example vulnerabilities, example attacks, guidance on how to avoid and
references to OWASP and other related resources. Many of you are familiar
with their Top 10 Most Critical Web Application Security Risks. They provide
the list for awareness and guidance on some of the critical web applications
security areas to address. It is a great list and many security vendors point
to it to show the types of attacks that can be mitigated.
Now the Internet of Things (IoT) has its own OWASP Top 10.

This article tries to demonstrate that Java can be more productive than Ruby.
We are going to develop the same application of the article Rolling with Ruby

result is that with less code, and less time you obtain a more powerful
application.

Ruby on Rails Revisited of Bill Walton says:
“What would you think if I told you that you can develop a web application

framework?”
Oops! Ten times faster!
Well, after these comments I decided to learn Ruby on Rails. I ne... (more)
DR sites are typically built as an exact replica of the primary site.
Application and database software is installed on DR site and sits there
mostly unused, waiting for a disaster to happen. DR site is very expensive
proposition than only large companies are able to afford. Amazon AWS is an
interesting alternative to having your own DR site.
Oracle databases on DR side are in Data Guard configuration with a primary
site and actively apply archive log files shipped from there. Pay per use,
scalable Amazon Cloud model makes it an attractive alternative to creating
and maintaining your own DR site. During normal usage you will use only as
many resources CPU, memory) as is required to keep Oracle Data Guard
active. Once disaster strikes you can switch over to DR site, add CPU and
memory to your database and make it able to withstand regular load until
primary site be... (more)

@ThingsExpo Stories By Liz McMillan The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...
