The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and
enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices -
computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by
2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several
decades.

Walk through an airport or a shopping mall and you may notice little pieces
of information popping up: "Flight delayed at gate G5"; "Stop into our shop
right now and receive up to 20 percent off your order"; etc. Did you sign up
for those notifications? Most likely not, but don't worry, your phone hasn't
been hacked. The notifications are a result of beacon technology.
What Is Beacon Technology?
Beacons are a leading edge technology that combines sensors with geolocation
and Bluetooth connectivity from smart phones to deliver notifications
directly to users as they pass through the vicinity. Because most beacons
today utilize Bluetooth Low Energy, the ideal application for the technology
is for hyper-local, micro-spatial networks. The beacons themselves are
typically small, self-contained devices that are inexpensive, have a long
battery lifespan, and easily programm... (more)

Between 2005 and 2020, data volumes will grow by a factor of 300 - enough
data to stack CDs from the earth to the moon 162 times. This has come to be
known as the ‘Big Data' phenomenon. Unfortunately, traditional approaches
to handling, storing and analyzing data aren't adequate at this scale:
they're too costly, slow and physically cumbersome to keep up. Fortunately,
in response a new breed of technology has emerged that is cheaper, faster and
more scalable. Yet, in meeting these new needs they break many of the
traditional security approaches on which enterprises depended. In these
massive data volumes, how are organizations going to ensure that their
customer information is safe from people looking to exploit it? Is it
possible to adopt Big Data technologies while demonstrating compliance with
industry regulations? Will security get i... (more)

The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.

Getting a Competitive Edge from Comprehensive Data Analysis
The next BriefingsDirect Voice of the Customer digital transformation case
study explores how linen services industry leader AmeriPride Services uses
big data to gain a competitive and comprehensive overview of its operations,
finances and culture.
We’ll explore how improved data analytics allows for disparate company
divisions and organizations to come under a single umbrella -- to become more
aligned -- and to act as a whole greater than the sum of the parts. This is
truly the path to a digital business.
Here to describe how digital transformation has been supported by innovations

I spend a lot of time helping organizations to “think like a data
scientist.” My book “Big Data MBA: Driving Business Strategies with Data
Science” has several chapters devoted to helping business leaders to
embrace the power of data scientist thinking. My Big Data MBA class at the
University of San Francisco School of Management focuses on teaching
tomorrow’s business executives the power of analytics and data science to
optimize key business processes, uncover new monetization opportunities and
create a more compelling, engaging customer and channel engagement.
However in working with our data science teams, I have come to realize that
we also need to address the other side of the data science equation; that we
need to teach the data scientists in order for them to think like business
executives. If the data science team cannot present the analytic results in a

Gamification and Rewards Programs Utilizing the IoT

Most people haven't heard the word, "gamification," even though they
probably, and perhaps unwittingly, participate in it every day.
Gamification is "the process of adding games or game-like elements to
something (as a task) so as to encourage participation." Further,
gamification is about bringing game mechanics - rules, constructs, processes,
and methods - into the real world in an effort to engage people.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Robert Endo, owner and engagement manager of
Intrepid Data, discussed how wearables, analytics, and geospatial
technologies can be combined to transform the world into the ultimate game
board. Organizations can grasp consumer, employee, or client intrinsic
interest by setting up cool, collaborative, and rewarding systems using the
IoT.

@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin... However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...
