Technology Isn't the Answer to Surviving Digital Disruption
Guest post by Charles Araujo, Principal Analyst, Intellyx
There's a funny thing about digital transformation: we are simultaneously
over-hyping it and understating it. On the one hand, every tech company in
the world is talking about it. It doesn't matter how mundane the technology;
every company is somehow relating their products to digital transformation.
On the other, many people are failing to grasp the import and impact of what
digital transformation really means. In far too many cases, business and IT
leaders are dismissing it as nothing more than a marketing ploy. The
unfortunate result is that the over-hypedness of digital transformation is
obscuring its real meaning.
This dichotomy is most apparent in what I call the tech company fallacy.
Everywhere I turn, I hear another company executive make a procl... (more)

Organizational Agility for Digital Transformation (Cultural Change, Change
Management)
Successful digital transformation requires new organizational competencies
and capabilities. Research tells us that the biggest impediment to successful
transformation is human; consequently, the biggest enabler is a properly
skilled and empowered workforce. In the digital age, new individual and
collective competencies are required.

The Lean Cloud: The Need for Multi-Cloud DevOps
All clouds are not equal. To succeed in a DevOps context, organizations
should plan to develop/deploy apps across a choice of on-premise and public
clouds simultaneously depending on the business needs. This is where the
concept of the Lean Cloud comes in - resting on the idea that you often need
to relocate your app modules over their life cycles for both innovation and
operational efficiency in the cloud.

Driving Digital Transformation through Infrastructure Built for Open Source
Information technology is an industry that has always experienced change, and
the dramatic change sweeping across the industry today could not be
truthfully described as the first time we've seen such widespread change
impacting customer investments. However, the rate of the change, and the
potential outcomes from today's digital transformation has the distinct
potential to separate the industry into two camps: Organizations that see the
change coming, embrace it, and successful leverage it; and on the other side,
organizations that will find themselves as roadkill on the technology
highway.

Config as Code vs Immutable Continuous Delivery in the Cloud
In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Claude Remillard, Principal Program
Manager in Developer Division at Microsoft, contrasted how his team used
config as code and immutable patterns for continuous delivery of
microservices and apps to the cloud.
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
He showed how the immutable patterns help developers do away with most of the
complexity of config as code-enabling scenarios such as rollback, zero
downtime upgrades with far greater simplicity. He also demoed building
immutable pipelines in the cloud using both containers and VMs.

Pokeman Go has been a raging success. But its launch was marred by frequent
downtimes and dropped connections. In a recent chat at the Google Cloud
Platform Next Conference, Niantic CTO Phil Keslin talked about the “hair
on fire” experience where the team had to firefight and upgrade key
components on the live production system in order to handle the unexpected
surge in new users joining in.
Among the various upgrades made to the system, Niantic had to replace the
network load balancer with a much more sophisticated HTTP/S load balancing
system that could handle a larger overall throughput and offer faster
connections. Keslin says that this timely upgrade made it possible for his
team to launch in Japan without an incident although the number of new user
signups at this point was triple what it was during their earlier US launch.
The Pokeman Go launch is a perfect ... (more)
I spend a lot of time helping organizations to “think like a data
scientist.” My book “Big Data MBA: Driving Business Strategies with Data
Science” has several chapters devoted to helping business leaders to
embrace the power of data scientist thinking. My Big Data MBA class at the
University of San Francisco School of Management focuses on teaching
tomorrow’s business executives the power of analytics and data science to
optimize key business processes, uncover new monetization opportunities and
create a more compelling, engaging customer and channel engagement.
However in working with our data science teams, I have come to realize that
we also need to address the other side of the data science equation; that we
need to teach the data scientists in order for them to think like business
executives. If the data science team cannot present the analytic results in a
