Azure platform is going all out and it is burgeoning.
"Microsoft Azure DocumentDB is a document-oriented, NoSQL database service
designed for modern mobile and web applications"
The above from Microsoft site.
Microsoft beefs its Azure Services portfolio with yet another service. Azure
DocementDB service is which also serves as a search tool. Searching stuff
that
goes into NoSQL should be very useful. It is presently available as a
technology
preview product and developers will be able to run SQLesque queries on JSON
data
and supports transactional consistency.
Under the hoods it uses the in-memory technology and includes important
libraries like .NET, Node.js, JavaScript and Python. DocumentDB is presently
strictly Microsoft but it intends to make it Open source.

I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?
Eric Miraglia of Yahoo!
1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the
iPhone SDK vs using AJAX?
2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to
make it faster?

my rich web apps? Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... (more)
It is a fact that end user response time is critical for business success.
The faster web pages are perceived the longer users tend to stay on the page
and therefore spend more money and drive business.
In order to ensure that end user response times are acceptable at all times
it is necessary to measure the time in the way the end user perceives
performance. Measuring and monitoring your live system is important to
identify problems early on before it affects too many end users. In order to
make sure that web pages are fast from the start it is very important to
constantly and continuously measure web page performance throughout the
development phase and in testing. There are two questions that need to be
answered
What is the time the user actually perceives as web response time? How to
measure it accurately and in an automated way?
What Time to Measure? Technical ... (more)
There are things in life that are just painful -- Doing dishes, paying taxes,
going to the dentist, and upgrading software. One of the most painful IT life
cycle events is upgrading from an older version of an operating system (OS)
to a newer one. In fact, there are 10s of millions of servers still running
Windows Server 2003, hosting applications that run important functions. The
problem is that Window Server 2003 is about to lose support from Microsoft
(end of life (EOL)) leaving many with a really difficult choice. Upgrade or
face escalating risk of security holes being exploited without any patches or
support. Holy strawberries Batman, we're in a jam.
This is a case of bare metal turning to rust. The virtual support rug is
being pulled out from underneath the data center. A mini Y2K event for
applications stranded on those old, obsolete servers. The challenge is ... (more)
Microsoft Sunday slashed the price of its poorly selling ARM-based
Windows-incompatible Surface RT by $150 to $349 for the 32GB model.
That's without the cover that also functions as a touch-sensitive keyboard.
With the magnet cover the price is $449. The bigger 64GB model has been cut
from $599 to $449 or from $699 to $549 with the cover.
IDC estimates that Microsoft shipped about 260,000 of the 10-inch widgets in
Q1, the latest numbers the researcher's got. Together with the 750,000 more
conventional Surface Pros that run Windows 8 it shipped during that quarter
it got all of 2% of the worldwide tablet market of going on 50 million units.
New Surface RTs and Surface Pros are rumored.
Some weeks ago the Wall Street Journal reported Microsoft was working on a
smaller version of the Surface RT.
Microsoft, which is reorganizing, is pushing into hardware as demand for

Microsoft Tuesday filed an emergency motion with the U.S. Court of Appeals
for the Federal Circuit in Washington looking for a stay of the permanent
injunction ordering Word and Office off the U.S. market by October 10.
It wants the stay while it appeals the decision.
The order came down late last Tuesday as part of a verdict that Word
infringes a custom XML patent held by an obscure Canadian ISV called i4i.
The plaintiff-favoring Texas district court that issued the injunction also
hit Microsoft with $290 million in damages, $200 million by way of
compensation and another $90 million for willfulness. It also refused to stay
its injunction.
Claiming a "classic case for a stay pending appeal," Microsoft wants an
expedited schedule and i4i's brief opposing the stay filed next week.
Its motion claims the Texas court made "several fundamental legal errors" and

Azure Session at Cloud Expo
Microsoft and Intuit are going to join their clouds, Azure and the Intuit
Partner Platform (IPP), so developers can deliver and market web applications
to the 27 million QuickBooks-using small businesses through the Intuit App
Center.
The integration also means that small businesses can use Microsoft's
cloud-based productivity applications via the Intuit App Center, presumably
heading off some losses to Google Apps and Zoho.
The deal calls for Azure to be an Intuit preferred platform.
There's a free Azure beta SDK that will federate applications developed on
Azure with the go-to-market IPP already available at
http://developer.intuit.com/azure.
Integration is based on an extension of the QuickBooks data model and will
provide APIs for single sign-on, billing, data integration and user
management.
The companies expect a flood of SaaS ap... (more)

Cloud Expo is the world's leading Cloud-focused event since 2007, and is held
five times a year, in New York City, Silicon Valley, Prague, Tokyo and Hong

Microsoft cloud services mean freedom for businesses. The freedom to access
the technology you want, where and when you want it. The freedom to take
advantage of the latest technology as a capital expense, or an operational
one. The freedom to focus on running your business - not running IT systems.

I was meeting with a small company today that has developed a SaaS solution
around task and project management. It's a very cool application, and as is
the fashion these days, uses subdomains to determine the end user's company
as requests come to the browser. So, if I were to sign up for the
application, my home url would be http://adamhoffman.getdonedone.com, whereas
if you signed up (and had the unlikely name of Bill Ion), your home page
would be http://billion.getdonedone.com. This is handled in ASP.NET
application code on their Win2K8 servers hosted at Rackspace. The question
quickly became "hey, we can do something similar in Azure, right?"
The answer is yes, and no, and yes. Let me explain.
My instant assumption was "yes", and ultimately, it is true that you can
accomplish this behavior. It does, however, require that wherever you host
your DNS that points to... (more)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told French daily Le Parisien Monday that sales
of the company's iPad- and Android-challenging Surface tablet had a "modest"
start because of limited availability confined to its online retail sites and
the few Microsoft stores in the US. Surface tablets are based on the ARM chip
and are not compatible with the huge library of x86 Windows apps. It's got a
click-on keyboard cover that's supposed to represent the best of the PC and
tablet worlds. Ballmer also reportedly said that four million upgrades to
Windows 8 were sold in the three days following its launch.

This book is the perfect size and the perfect depth for getting up to speed
quickly with building Windows 8 Store Applications.
The book starts by introducing WinRT. This introduction includes a really
nice history of how Microsoft got to where they are now. It starts with a
look back at MS-DOS, MS-DOS Executive, the Win32 API, COM, and.NET. The
introduction leads us up to NUI (Natural User Interface) and the Windows
Store Application Design Principles.
The first chapter ends with a look at the Windows 8 tool that are available
to developers and designers. They include, Blend for Visual Studio, C++ and
XAML, HTML5 and JavaScript, and VB/C# and XAML.
I have listed all the chapters below.
1. The New Windows Runtime
2. Getting Started
3. Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML)
4. Windows 8 Applications
5. Application Lifecycle
