Config as Code vs Immutable Continuous Delivery in the Cloud
In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Claude Remillard, Principal Program
Manager in Developer Division at Microsoft, contrasted how his team used
config as code and immutable patterns for continuous delivery of
microservices and apps to the cloud.
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
He showed how the immutable patterns help developers do away with most of the
complexity of config as code-enabling scenarios such as rollback, zero
downtime upgrades with far greater simplicity. He also demoed building
immutable pipelines in the cloud using both containers and VMs.

As I wrote earlier this year over at InfoWorld, Microsoft took another step
toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was
releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why
this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this
gives Microsoft.
Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop
locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked
its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly
different for some of the configurations -- I can't tell you how many nights
I have lost sleep because of environments being slightly different!
Development and hosting are two completely different things. What Microsoft
did is one-upped Google and Amazon.
The psychological advantage comes into play for companies that aren't 100 ... (more)
DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real purp... (more)

When we talk about the impact of BYOD and BYOA and the Internet of Things, we
often focus on the impact on data center architectures. That's because there
will be an increasing need for authentication, for access control, for
security, for application delivery as the number of potential endpoints
(clients, devices, things) increases. That means scale in the data center.
What we gloss over, what we skip, is that before any of these "things" ever
makes a request to access an application it had to execute a DNS query.
Every. Single. Thing.
Maybe that's because we assume DNS can handle the load. So far it's done
well. You rarely, if ever, hear of disruptions or outages due directly to the
execution of DNS. Oh, there has been some issues with misconfiguration of DNS
and of exploitation of DNS (hijacking, illicit use in reflection attacks,
et... (more)
My favorite writer, Gil Press, sums it up with, “It’s Official: The
Internet Of Things Takes Over Big Data As The Most Hyped Technology” where
he talks about how Gartner released its latest Hype Cycle for Emerging
Technologies, and how big data has moved down the “trough of
disillusionment,” replaced by the Internet of Things at the top of the hype
cycle.
The term Internet of Things was coined by the British technologist Kevin
Ashton in 1999, to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the
physical world via ubiquitous sensors.
Today, the huge amounts of data we are producing and the advances in mobile
technologies are bringing the idea of Internet connected devices into our
homes and daily lives.

off for the company. It has been successful in articulating and demonstrating
the value of data-driven insights to governments, medical institutions, and
public sector organizations.
Emerging markets that are turning technology savvy are becoming the hotbed

Azure Resource Manager: The Secret Sauce of the Microsoft Cloud Strategy
Since its introduction in 2009, Microsoft Azure has gone through a
significant transformation. What started as a hardcore set of platform
services is now a force to be reckoned within the infrastructure market as
well.
According to Gartner, Azure is inching closer to AWS, firmly securing its
place in the top right section of the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
Magic Quadrant, which is reserved only for the market leaders.
One technology that’s accelerating Microsoft’s infrastructure services
is Azure Resource Manager, which has become the cornerstone of Microsoft
cloud platform. And it’s gearing up to play a key role in Azure Stack, the
private cloud offering from Redmond.
In this multi-part article series, of which this piece is the first
installment, we will take a closer look at Azure Res... (more)
Azure Resource Manager: The Shift from Services to Resources
In the first part of this series, we discussed the evolution of Azure IaaS
and role of Azure Resource Manager. The next installment of the series
explains the key differences between Azure Service Management (ASM) and Azure
Resource Management (ARM) models. We will also take a look at key concepts
and terminology related to ARM.
ASM or ARM?
One of the key tenets of cloud, especially infrastructure services, is
programmability. Almost every cloud provider exposes a set of APIs to
manipulate the virtual infrastructure programmatically. Even before the Cloud
Computing term became a buzzword, Amazon exposed APIs for storage and
compute, which eventually became the core of AWS.
When Microsoft built Azure, developers could interact with the control plane
through the Azure Service Management (ASM) API. Before off... (more)
