Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems are made up of code and
algorithms, and as such, they work as fast as computers can process them.
Often this means massive amounts of learning can be accomplished every second
without stop 24x7x365. Code doesn't need to take weekends off, holidays, or
sick time. Code doesn't get tired. It can recognize complex patterns, areas
of potential improvement and problems in real-time (aka digital-time).
Given these available computing capabilities and speeds, what are executives
to do with AI and machine learning, when we live and operate in relatively
slow human-time, and work within organizations that work at an even slower
pace of organizational-time.
I believe the first step is to admit we have a problem - the problem is a
difference in the speed that computers can operate, and the speeds in which
us humans can pr... (more)

Cross-Protocol M2M IoT Communications
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
Fifty billion connected devices and still no winning protocols standards.
HTTP, WebSockets, MQTT, and CoAP seem to be leading in the IoT protocol race
at the moment but many more protocols are getting introduced on a regular
basis. Each protocol has its pros and cons depending on the nature of the
communications. Does there really need to be only one protocol to rule them
all? Of course not.

How Software Is Eating the World of IoT
The many IoT deployments around the world are busy integrating smart devices
and sensors into their enterprise IT infrastructures. Yet all of this
technology - and there are an amazing number of choices - is of no use
without the software to gather, communicate, and analyze the new data flows.
Without software, there is no IT.
In this power panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger
Strukhoff, panelists will look at the protocols that communicate data and the
emerging data analytics that bring its full value to the enterpris... (more)
Optimizing VMware Environments for Peak SQL Server Performance
VMware configurations designed to provide high availability often make it
difficult to achieve satisfactory performance required by mission-critical
SQL Server applications. But what if it were possible to have both high
availability and high performance without the high cost and complexity
normally required?
This article explores two requirements for getting both for SQL applications,
while reducing capital and operational expenditures. The first is to
implement a storage architecture within VMware environments desig... (more)
Container Monitoring: Top Docker Metrics to Watch
By Stefan Thies
Monitoring of Docker environments is challenging. Why? Because each container
typically runs a single process, has its own environment, utilizes virtual
networks, or has various methods of managing storage. Traditional monitoring
solutions take metrics from each server and applications they run. These
servers and applications running on them are typically very static, with very
long uptimes. Docker deployments are different: a set of containers may run
many applications, all sharing the resources of one or more unde... (more)

@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on their mind like “How is my application doing” but no id... Nov. 14, 2016 06:15 PM EST Reads: 474 | By Liz McMillan The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal.
In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, exami... In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu... We hear more and more about cyber-attacks on the websites of large corporations, banks and even small businesses. When online we’re concerned not only for our own safety but also our privacy. We have to know that hackers usually start their preparation by investigating the private information of admins – the habits, interests, visited websites and so on. On the other hand, our own security is in danger bec... Nov. 3, 2016 05:00 AM EDT Reads: 1,529 | By Pat Romanski Enterprises have been using both Big Data and virtualization for years. Until recently, however, most enterprises have not combined the two. Big Data's demands for higher levels of performance, the ability to control quality-of-service (QoS), and the ability to adhere to SLAs have kept it on bare metal, apart from the modern data center cloud. With recent technology innovations, we've seen the advantages of bare metal erode to such a degree that the enhanced flexibility and reduced costs that cl... Nov. 3, 2016 05:00 AM EDT Reads: 1,516 |
