Tune into: Hybrid While American Idol finalist Adam Lambert’s “My heart is a Ghost Town” is slowly moving down the international hit rankings, enterprises see something else slowly but surely turning into a ghost town. Namely their data centers. For many IT managers, this is still a bit of a shock. Sure, most companies stopped a long time ago featuring their data center on a raised floor behind glass, right next to their reception area, but for many IT professionals a trip to the company data center still feels a little bit like coming home. I can still remember the disappointment of the IT operations manager of a financial institution located right in the heart of Amsterdam, when his brand new mainframe was delivered. That the new system only occupied barely half of the available floor space, was not what got him. It was the fact that the new million dollar plus ... (more)

i-Technology Predictions for 2007: Where's It All Headed?

At the end of each year, when SYS-CON informally polls its globe-girdling network of software developers, industry executives, commentators, investors, writers, and editors, our question is always the same: where's the industry going next year? Every time, the answers are surprisingly different from the year before, and of course throw light not just on where the industry is going but also how it's going to get there, why, because of who, within what kind of time-scale - all that good stuff. TechWave Revisited

Once again I thought this was one of the best TechWaves in years. Better than last year's, which was good. Having my laptop crash on me when I'm scheduled to do four sessions wasn't pleasant and took the edge off of it for me. Otherwise, it might have been a real blast. Location - I'm still not a big fan of Las Vegas, but the Mandalay Bay was a great place to hold the event. I can't believe I've stayed there twice and still haven't been in the wave pool. All the same, I'm looking forward to next year's East Coast location. However, I'd still really like to see the date and locat... (more)

Ellen Degeneres Should Go Open Source

By the way, if Ellen Degeneres wants to respond in a reasonable and constructive way to the lawsuits over her use of song snippets to dance to, she could always start using Creative Commons-licensed music, with a nice plug for the open-hearted musicians making our lives more tuney. ... (more)

The Direct-Response SMS Revolution

"American Idol" appears to be the first major television production in the U.S. to capitalize on a target audience that falls into the category of "technology-savvy youth." By all accounts, the results are impressive. By April 9, AT&T; was able to claim their one millionth vote via text messaging and they're still only halfway through what is, to say the least, an elongated program format. Still, if the results are to follow the trend of "Pop Idol," the UK version of the production, the final stages of the show will reap the rewards for AT&T; in terms of direct-response SMS utiliza...
