Gearing up for Digital Transformation
By Vera Chen
Modern organizations face great challenges as they embrace innovation and integrate new tools and services. They begin to mature and move away from the complacency of maintaining traditional technologies and systems that only solve individual, siloed problems and work “well enough.” In order to build a product that delivers continuous value, organizations must discover and address the true pain points and pitfalls teams experience throughout the incident management lifecycle in order to innovate solutions that boost revenue, increase system availability and performance, and augment employee productivity and efficiency. These companies must undergo a digital transformation.
In recent months, the product team here at PagerDuty has continued to impress me with their feature releases that aim to improve the welfare of IT organizations and the lives of their IT Ops and DevOps incident responders. I’d like to share a few areas of recent product focus that stand out, as they focus on transforming the way people get things done and resolving issues.
Dynamic and Collaborative Incident Response
PagerDuty recently released features that help people connect with data at scale. Dynamic incident response streamlines workflows that help you recruit the right collaborators and responders on an issue. How? You can now easily incorporate additional individuals or escalation policies to collaborate and resolve issues faster with Response Mobilizer. Moreover, individuals who are collaborating on a critical incident can quickly jump on a conference call to share root cause analysis status updates, discuss and tackle roadblocks, and drive faster resolution of issues with Response Bridge.
Continuing with the theme of collaboration, our bi-directional PagerDuty Slack Integration syncs critical incident details including incident ID, description, status, services impacted, and who the incident is assigned to. Collaborators can leverage Slack’s slash commands to create a PagerDuty incident from directly within Slack. This enables seamless collaboration with remote teammates and cross-functional team members, making it easy to discuss critical issues or remediation details, and even easier to acknowledge or resolve incidents with the click of a button — without having to leave the Slack interface.
Platform Extensibility
The product team continues to make it even easier for developers to extend the PagerDuty platform in various ways. The recent release of API v 2.0 introduces more consistency and allows users to quickly test API calls right within the document library! You can embed PagerDuty easily into your apps, or your apps into PagerDuty, to create your own integrations.
API v2.0 gives you the ability to create your own integrations through the Custom Events Transformer. Use JavaScript to easily convert a payload from any tool that can run a script or send an HTTP/HTTPS request into a payload that PagerDuty can interpret. You can easily add the custom event transformer via creating a new service, execute and modify pre-populated JavaScript code, and send a payload to the integration URL to trigger an incident in PagerDuty! It’s that simple!
PagerDuty Add-ons give you the power to add more functionality to PagerDuty so that you can access additional features directly within PagerDuty. You can for instance add scripts or web pages to your PagerDuty environment. Our support team introduced a few Add-ons for you to consider and help you get started — export users to a CSV, view PagerDuty’s status via a status page directly from your own account, view incident activity trends that may help you decide how to efficiently staff your teams and organize their response schedules, and so much more!
Native Integrations
I could go on and on about some of our newest native integrations as well — especially the bi-directional PagerDuty ServiceNow Integration that syncs incident updates, status, and notes between both platforms in real-time, and also enables you to provision PagerDuty users directly from the ServiceNow platform, and more!
Looking Ahead
Our engineers will continue to diligently develop valuable features to surprise you and most importantly, solve more of the problems you face today. You’ll get to see and hear more about these features by joining us at the PagerDuty Summit. In addition to the opportunity to attend a variety sessions, delivered by the industry’s best, you will have the opportunity to check out live demos of our newest features and solutions! You’ll be one of the first to see how you and your organization can leverage PagerDuty’s newest features to transform your operations environment.
I hope you’re just as excited as I am to bring your teammates to the PagerDuty Summit on September 13th ! You’ll meet our new CEO, members of the amazing product staff, and other industry leading attendees and speakers from Yahoo, Splunk, Google, IBM, Airbnb and more! Most importantly, you’ll be able to learn from organizations similar to yours that have overcome digital transformation challenges you might be currently facing now or some day in the future.

By Elizabeth White More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be.

At its core DevOps is all about collaboration. The lines of communication must be opened and it takes some effort to ensure that they stay that way. It’s easy to pay lip service to trends and talk about implementing new methodologies, but without action, real benefits cannot be realized. Success requires planning, advocates empowered to effect change, and, of course, the right tooling.
To bring about a cultural shift it’s important to share challenges. In simple terms, ensuring that everyone knows what everyone else is doing can create a real team spirit and social cohesion that will drive D...
The global wireless health market by products encompasses ECG monitors, insulin monitors, neuromonitors such as EEG and EMG devices.
Recent estimations show that an astounding 1.8 million people across the world will be using wireless remote monitoring devices by 2017. Many of these users will be those suffering from chronic diseases. To put that into perspective, consider this: about 75% of all healthcare expenditure worldwide is spent on patients suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and Alzheimers, and cardiovascular problems. Grappling with these issues, the healthcar...
Recently I've been doing quite a bit of analysis work using the IBM Watson cognitive business platform. The really exciting thing about this opportunity is the way data can seem to have a conversation with you. This got me wondering if social media data could carry on a conversation as well. Given my almost unhealthy interest in cloud computing, we ran a one week experiment to "crowdsource the internet" in order to see if it held any interesting cloud computing insights.
I spend a lot of time helping organizations to “think like a data scientist.” My book “Big Data MBA: Driving Business Strategies with Data Science” has several chapters devoted to helping business leaders to embrace the power of data scientist thinking. My Big Data MBA class at the University of San Francisco School of Management focuses on teaching tomorrow’s business executives the power of analytics and data science to optimize key business processes, uncover new monetization opportunities and create a more compelling, engaging customer and channel engagement.

This is a short blog with a harsh message for Big Data vendors.
Camera fades in to Pastor Schmarzo heading to the pulpit…
What does the future hold for today’s big data vendors? Hundreds of startups are rushing into the big data market to stake their claim to a market that IDC predicts will reach $187 billion by 2019. Dang, that’s a big market, especially considering that the Global Business Intelligence market will only reach a trifling $20.8 billion by 2018 or the long-running ERP applications market is expected to reach a trivial $84.1 billion by 2020. Yes, the big data market opportu...
The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to change everything by enabling “smart” environments (homes, cities, hospitals, schools, stores, etc.) and smart products (cars, trucks, airplanes, trains, wind turbines, lawnmowers, etc.). I recently wrote about the importance of moving beyond “connected” to “smart” in a blog titled “Internet of Things: Connected Does Not Equal Smart”. The article discusses the importance of moving beyond just collecting the data, to transitioning to leveraging this new wealth of IoT data to improve the decisions that these smart environments and products need to make: t...
Ten short years ago, Apache Hadoop was just a small project deployed on a few machines at Yahoo and within a few years, it had truly become the backbone of Yahoo’s data infrastructure. Additionally, the current Apache Hadoop market is forecasted to surpass $16 billion by 2020.
This might lead you to believe that Apache Hadoop is currently the backbone of data infrastructures for all enterprises; however, widespread enterprise adoption has been shockingly low.
Time and again, those keeping a pulse on the Internet of Things (IoT) space frequently hear about the “rise of the machines.” Humanity is not only discovering fascinating ways to integrate machines into our daily lives, but also finding new uses for machines as well. How? Machines are now “internet-connected” just like the smartphones we carry around in our pockets. And this isn’t just on the commercial side with the likes of smart thermostats or connected vehicles – even tractors and oil and gas machinery are industrial examples of where new “things” are now on the digital network. ...
