Welcome to the latest installment in the battle of two tech titans. Last week Alphabet announced that Nest is being merged into Google. See Fortune's summary: Google Will Absorb Nest Developers.
This is the denouement to the saga that started in April, tied to infighting between the Google and Nest teams. I dissected this "silo-itis" in Why #Nest is Down, #Amazon Up, in #IoT for the #Connected Home.
Now some unsurprising new developments since Tony Fadell, the CEO of Nest, resigned in June. Here's what Google is trying to achieve by "re-absorbing" the troubled Nest group:
- A single boss: Hiroshi Lockheimer
- A unified IoT platform: includes the Google Home smart speaker and other Home products
- A more coordinated strategy (tbd) to address the Smart Home market
- Cost efficiencies and economies of scale
- Less squabbling
These are good moves. But they still don't solve the underlying issue of bringing new products to market. Google is behind in delivering Google Home, their smart speaker competitor to the Amazon Echo. And Nest has been slow to deliver new products.
More departures to come from Nest? Maybe. Depending on how Google handles these changes, the engineering teams may leave for greener pastures, which could further delay products. The question for Nest developers may be, do they ‘fly the coop,' or stay and hope to ‘rule the roost'?
Meanwhile, Amazon is rumored to have sold more than 3 million Echo units and added over 1,000 skills to help consumers control home devices, personal services, notifications and entertainment. More important, they are developing a strong ecosystem of partners, including recently added Sonos and LG which are moving toward Alexa-compatibility early next year.
Amazon is also exploring moving to new platforms. That was made clear from their talks with Lenovo about providing Alexa for a voice UI to Lenovo PCs as reported by CNET: Amazon Alexa's New Home: Your PC ?
Stay tuned for an exciting fall. We should see a number of new Amazon announcements and perhaps shipping product from Google. A rumored October 4 Google announcement is likely to unveil more details about Google Home.
For more on Amazon's IoT strategy, see Amazon Developments in IoT: A Force to Be Reckoned With. Also I'll be doing a deep dive into Amazon's IoT strategy and the overall topic of ‘Monetizing the IoT' at conferences this fall: IoT Emerge in Chicago and Internet of @ThingsExpo in Santa Clara.

The explosion of cloud onto the enterprise scene has, literally, revolutionized how businesses across the size spectrum do business, yet there’s a price tag tucked into this cloud’s silver lining that smart decision-makers should pay heed to.
This is the era of what I like to call the consumerization of enterprise software. It’s bringing tremendous benefit to the business world, but it’s also bringing a great deal of change, particularly to the understanding of how business software adoption and use is done, and enterprises of all sizes need to familiarize themselves with best practices-under...
To achieve "quality @ speed", it's essential to have unrestrained access to a trustworthy and realistic test environment. It is important to recognize that a complete test environment includes the application under test (AUT) and all of its dependent components (e.g., APIs, 3rd-party services, databases, applications, and other endpoints).
Service virtualization is an emerging technology that provides DevTest teams access to a complete test environment by simulating the dependent components that are beyond your control, still evolving, or too complex to configure in a test lab.
With online viewership and sales growing rapidly, enterprises are interested in understanding how they analyze performance to positively impact business metrics. Deeper insight into the user experience is needed to understand why conversions are dropping and/or bounce rates are increasing or, preferably, to understand what has been helping these metrics improve.
The digital performance management industry has evolved as application performance management companies have broadened their scope beyond synthetic testing that simulates users loading specific pages at regular intervals to include w...
With all the excellent training available on television today, we are all now well prepared to deal with the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Our failure as a society lies, however, in our misunderstanding of the nature of the cybersecurity challenge. This failure threatens us all and our survival will depend on society’s ability to deal with the evolution and maturation of the changing enterprise cybersecurity challenge.
If you’re completely oblivious to the living dead threat, a zombie apocalypse refers to a widespread (usually global) rise of zombies hostile to human life. The zombies will en...
Some mainstream IT buyers might think that most cloud infrastructure vendors and service providers are essentially alike. But there are key differences. Besides, given the body of market research to the contrary, there’s clearly no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" cloud solution.
Furthermore, if you believe that a hybrid cloud should support an IT agenda to transform a business, then a viable solution must consider the preexisting systems of record within the enterprise. That’s why forward-thinking CIOs often seek information and guidance on two fronts.
First, they want to know how to ext...
New forces are impacting the entire value chain of an enterprise. Availability of large amounts of digital data, automation of the production processes, inter-connectivity of the supply chains, and digitization of the customer experience is re-organizing entire industries leading to the transformation of business models.
Let’s look at the some of the critical pieces of the value chain and see the impact of the new technologies.
In the era of microservices and cloud-native applications, Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) is going through a major transformation. The combination of containers and continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) is enabling rapid deployment of software like never before. And though the languages, runtimes, frameworks, deployment targets have changed dramatically, the tooling hasn’t evolved much. Developers are still relying on traditional integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio, Eclipse, and IntelliJ. While they may be powerful, they are definitely not designed t...
Just as writing has come to mean texting, blogging or any form of digital writing, the cloud today means one or all of the three Cs: computing, connectivity and communication. And just as nearly all thought to putting pen to paper has disappeared, all reference to the natural cloud is long forgotten. The three Cs have altered the way we consume services. The adage, “change is the only constant,” holds true in the IT landscape like no other, forcing IT admins to constantly learn new skills and make strategic decisions.
While some existing apps allow the Doctors to write using their stylus pen, what is needed is an integrated solution that includes handwriting recognition, voice , face recognition and other cognitive intelligence as part of health care applications.
Adopting storage innovation protects the Nebraska Medical Center from data disruption and adds operational simplicity to complex data lifecycle management.

This is a short blog with a harsh message for Big Data vendors.
Camera fades in to Pastor Schmarzo heading to the pulpit…
What does the future hold for today’s big data vendors? Hundreds of startups are rushing into the big data market to stake their claim to a market that IDC predicts will reach $187 billion by 2019. Dang, that’s a big market, especially considering that the Global Business Intelligence market will only reach a trifling $20.8 billion by 2018 or the long-running ERP applications market is expected to reach a trivial $84.1 billion by 2020. Yes, the big data market opportu...
Organizations have key business processes that they are constantly trying to re-engineer. These key business processes – loan approvals, college applications, mortgage underwriting, product and component testing, credit applications, medical reviews, employee hiring, environmental testing, requests for proposals, contract bidding, etc. – go through multiple steps, usually involving multiple people with different skill sets, with a business outcome at the end (accept/reject, bid/no bid, pass/fail, retest, reapply, etc.). And while these processes typically include “analytics” that report on ho...

There are some enterprise applications that were born to be in the cloud. Customer relationship management (CRM) applications were an early favorite because salespeople (the primary consumers of CRM) are decentralized and mobile. Web applications and personal data storage are also ideal cloud applications because they allow enterprises to scale up easily while driving down costs. Enterprises have held on to their communications, however, making it one of the last applications to move into the cloud.
Companies are migrating infrastructure to the cloud in order to achieve advantages and agility that they need to remain competitive. However, they may have difficulty achieving one extremely important benefit of cloud computing as they attempt to run their MySQL databases in the cloud – scalability in true utility fashion. Similar to the power utilities we are all familiar with, this entails the ability to get what you need, when you need it and pay for only what you use, even during peak demand.
