There is an old saying that good things come in small packages. This saying
definitely applies to this book, which focuses in on a set of functions that
most people are not aware of that are available in SQL Server. To start off
with we need to answer the following question: What are T-SQL Window
functions? These functions have nothing to do with the Microsoft Windows API.
They are in essence a way to create a window into your data as you process
each line in a query. Their strength lies in the ease with which you can
solve tricky queries. The authors also point out that these functions don't
add any new functionality per se as you could create the queries the old way;
however, in general the functions are much more efficient.

As I wrote earlier this year over at InfoWorld, Microsoft took another step
toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was
releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why
this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this
gives Microsoft.
Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop
locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked
its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly

If you’ve been following along the DevCentral team’s journey toward F5 Certification, then you may be aware that we were in Chicago last week for F5’s Agility 2016 conference and took our 101 Application Delivery Fundamentals exam. I am happy to report that all of us, Jason, John, Chase and I, passed our exams. I gotta tell you, it’s a relief since I didn’t want to title this article, ‘Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.’ Good song but wanted to avoid that.
Ugh. I see so many organizations get so close to the goal line with Big Data, and then get sidelined by something that is not nearly as important to the business. It is easy to see how these organizations get distracted as they get near the Big Data goal line, because the average CIO and Line of Business executive are continually fighting battles. They are so busy fighting battles that they forget to focus on winning the war.
This is an unusual blog for me. Usually I talk about how organizations can more effectively leverage data and analytics to power their business. However, as I conduct more Big Data Vision Workshops, I have come to realize that a big part of the success of these engagements is the ability to “listen and comprehend.”

Generally speaking, there are two kinds of companies in the world: data rich and data poor. The richest of the data rich are easy to name: Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple. But you don’t need to be at the top of this list to use data to create value. You need to have the tools in place to turn information (data) into action. That’s what the data rich do that the data poor and the data middle class do not.
The modern IT network encounters a lot of twists and turns on its way to high performance and user satisfaction. The humble network, which for a long time was fairly straightforward, is now a complicated infrastructure component that requires careful management and monitoring. Private and public network topologies are much more diverse these days, so that app delivery takes many twists and turns through paths, protocols and configurations along various networks, whether LAN, WAN or cloud.

This is a no-hype, pragmatic post about why I think you should consider architecting your next project the way SOA and/or microservices suggest.
