The Internet of Things has continued to grow at a pace that suggests a staying power beyond a simple buzzword. It permeates nearly every industry across the globe, both industrial and consumer, and although the complexity varies from application to application, the technology has allowed us to rethink the way we live into the future. However, as fun as it is to don the seer’s cap and predict all of the wonderful ways connected technology will change our lives, the development of the “back end” of the Internet of Things is proving to be a formidable component in the quest for growth.
This is another topic that has taken me a long time to write, but several conversations with Peter Burris(@plburris) from Wikibon finally helped me to pull this together. Thanks Peter!
I’ve struggled to understand and define the Intellectual Capital (IC) components – or dimensions – of the new, Big Data organization; that is, what are the new Big Data assets that an organization needs to collect, enrich and apply to drive business differentiation and competitive advantage? These assets form the basis of the modern “collaborative value creation” process and are instrumental in helping organiza...
Since we launched our Agile Digital Transformation Roadmap poster two weeks ago, several hundred people around the globe have downloaded it – but it’s not clear how many of them have taken the time to work their way through it.
Haven’t seen it yet, you say? No worries – you can download the poster for free at AgileDigitalTransformation.com.
OK then – everyone have the poster handy? Good. Here’s how to make sense of it.
When digital laggards finally recognize the degree of change digital technologies will force upon their businesses, and desperately try to outrun the inescapable Darwinian effect of their slow start, they will be faced with not one, but three ages of digital transformation to navigate and survive. Understanding these ages, and what is unique about each one, is critical for business strategy, prioritizing, planning, sequencing and budgeting.
Machine-to-machine (M2M) learning is an integral apart of the expanding world of Industrial IoT. Over the past few months we have given attention to manufacturing and its current digital disruption, but have failed to show the direct impact smart M2M and IoT technology is having on the industry. So, this week we are diving deeper into the term machine learning and how it connects to manufacturing both today and in the future.
After many years of research, misfires and frightening Hollywood plotlines, artificial intelligence (AI) is finally coming into its own and beginning to demonstrate significant business value. The combined forces of big data, human expertise and AI are being used across industries as diverse as healthcare and manufacturing, as well as within all aspects of business. IT operations is one area that AI is beginning to contribute to enormously.
IT infrastructures are changing rapidly today, particularly hybrid cloud environments.
While they are increasingly dynamic and agile, they are also ext...
Most people haven’t heard the word, “gamification,” even though they probably, and perhaps unwittingly, participate in it every day.
Gamification is “the process of adding games or game-like elements to something (as a task) so as to encourage participation.” Further, gamification is about bringing game mechanics – rules, constructs, processes, and methods – into the real world in an effort to engage people.

A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives.
Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, which can process our conversational commands and orchestrate the outcomes we request across our perso...
Microsoft took another step toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this gives Microsoft.
Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly different for some of the configurations -- I can't tell you how many nights I have lost sleep becaus...
The cloud promises new levels of agility and cost-savings for Big Data, data warehousing and analytics. But it’s challenging to understand all the options – from IaaS and PaaS to newer services like HaaS (Hadoop as a Service) and BDaaS (Big Data as a Service).
In her session at @BigDataExpo at @ThingsExpo, Hannah Smalltree, a director at Cazena, provided an educational overview of emerging “as-a-service” options for Big Data in the cloud. This is critical background for IT and data professionals, as experts estimate that “as-a-service” cloud sourcing will increase from today’s 15% to 35% by...
"I think that everyone recognizes that for IoT to really realize its full potential and value that it is about creating ecosystems and marketplaces and that no single vendor is able to support what is required," explained Esmeralda Swartz, VP, Marketing Enterprise and Cloud at Ericsson, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held June 7-9, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
Early adopters of IoT viewed it mainly as a different term for machine-to-machine connectivity or M2M. This is understandable since a prerequisite for any IoT solution is the ability to collect and aggregate device data, which is most often presented in a dashboard. The problem is that viewing data in a dashboard requires a human to interpret the results and take manual action, which doesn’t scale to the needs of IoT.
