"DevOps is really about the business. The business is under pressure today, competitively in the marketplace to respond to the expectations of the customer. The business is driving IT and the problem is that IT isn't responding fast enough," explained Mark Levy, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Serena Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at DevOps Summit (http://DevOpsSummit.SYS-CON.com), held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Serena Software supports DevOps and Continuous Delivery by providing application deployment automation and software release management solutions to replace slow and error-prone manual processes. 2,500 enterprises around the world trust Serena to help them develop and deploy better software.

Science in the Appliance – Applications, Components and Environments
By By Kevin Parker
Like most jobs in life, preparation is the key to success. After getting to know the Serena Deployment Automation technology by working with the free version (download from the Serena website) for a few hours (see yesterday’s post) I decided it was time to try for real.
My application was a Library Management System I developed a while ago for a public library in the United Kingdom. Like most developers I like to have something familiar to play with when I am learning a new technology.
So I started by defining my application to Serena Deployment Automation (SDA). The truth is that the help system (which is very helpful) suggested I defined the Components first. Partly because I like to try and test things to their limits and partly because I like to do the unexpected. [continued]

Companies that were not previously in the technology space now find themselves competing with Google and Amazon on the speed of innovation. As the innovation cycle accelerates, companies must embrace rapid and constant
change to both applications and their infrastructure, and find a way to deliver speed and agility of development without sacrificing reliability or efficiency of operations. In her Keynote at DevOps Summit Silicon Valley, Victoria Livschitz, CEO of Qubell, discussed how IT organizations can automate just-in-time assembly of application environments - each built for a specific purpose with the right infrastructure, components, service, data and tools - and deliver this automation to developers as a self-service. Victoria's keynote included remarks by Kira Makagon, EVP of Innovation at RingCentral, and Ratnakar Lavu, EVP of Digital Technology at Kohl's.

NoOps != No Operations
Download slides ▸ Here
Shipping daily, injecting faults, and keeping an extremely high availability "without Ops"? Understand why NoOps does not mean no operations. Agile development methodologies require evolved operations to be successful.

In his keynote at DevOps Summit Silicon Valley, David Tesar, Microsoft Technical Evangelist on Microsoft Azure and DevOps, discussed how Microsoft teams that have made huge progress with a DevOps transformation effectively utilize operations staff and how challenges were overcome. Regardless of whether you are a startup or a mature enterprise, whether you are using PaaS, Micro Services, or Containerization, walk away with some practical tips where Ops can make a significant impact working with the development teams. Operational teams and functions are increasingly more important as the industry delivers software at a blazing pace.
DevOps Is Even More Important Than You Think
The move in recent years to cloud computing services and architectures has added significant pace to the application development and deployment environment. When enterprise IT can spin up large computing instances in just minutes, developers can also design and deploy in small time frames that were unimaginable a few years ago. The consequent move toward lean, agile, and fast development leads to the need for the development and operations sides to work very closely together. Thus, DevOps becomes essential for any ambitious enterprise today.

This Lunchtime Power Panel at DevOps Summit was moderated by Andi Mann, VP of Strategic Solutions at CA Technologies. Monish Sharma, VP of Customer Success at ElasticBox; Myles Steinhauser, Software Development Engineer at Blue Box; Victoria Livschitz, CEO of Qubell Inc.; and Mark Levy, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Serena Software go beyond the basics in a discussion of why DevOps is not only important for transformation, but is mission-critical for enterprises that want to stay in business.
DevOps: Disruptive but Essential in a Cloud Expo® Universe
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit 2015 New York and Silicon Valley will be held:
DevOps Summit 2015 New York
(June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center, Manhattan)
DevOps Summit 2015 Silicon Valley
(November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center)
DevOps Summit, June 9-11, 2015, at the New York Javits Center in the heart of world's financial capital, will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of time enterprise IT professionals spend putting out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.
DevOps Summit content doubled in November from a single track last year in New York to two simultaneous tracks: "Dev" Developer Focus and "Ops" Operations Focus, as well as high impact keynotes attended by over 1,000 delegates.
We'll see you in New York City! See you in June!

While there are many ways to define DevOps, the goal of the concept is to be able to deliver IT solutions faster, leveraging several technology tools to add value for business. Cloud companies have demonstrated how they can manage massive pools of IT infrastructure, giving the developer a very flexible resource pool that they can leverage and IT is eager to do the same.

Cognitive Computing is becoming the foundation for a new generation of solutions that have the potential to transform business. Unlike traditional approaches to building solutions, a cognitive computing approach allows the data to help determine the way applications are designed. This contrasts with conventional software development that begins with defining logic based on the current way a business operates.
In her session at 18th Cloud Expo, Judith S. Hurwitz, President and CEO of Hurwitz & ...
In his general session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect and Advocate at New Relic, discussed cloud as a ‘better data center’ and how it adds new capacity (faster) and improves application availability (redundancy).
The cloud is a ‘Dynamic Tool for Dynamic Apps’ and resource allocation is an integral part of your application architecture, so use only the resources you need and allocate /de-allocate resources on the fly.

xMatters for the Enterprise DevOps toolchain stitches together the disparate operational tools to help orchestrate hand-offs between the tools and team members. Customers like us because we understand the need for DevOps or NoOps automation at enterprise scale and recognize that humans are still involved when something goes wrong.
Designing for performance is absolutely essential; but runtime is so crazy a variable that we
can reasonably blame too-early optimization for a non-negligible chunk of lousy UX and unmaintainable code.
The latest Guide to Performance and Monitoring covers both the static and dynamic, the verifiable and the unknowable sides of building and maintaining performant applications.
An expert panel discussion examines the value and direction of The Open Group IT4IT initiative, a new reference architecture for managing IT to help business become digitally innovative.
IT4IT was a hot topic at The Open Group San Francisco 2016 conference in January. This panel, conducted live at the event, explores how the reference architecture grew out of a need at some of the world's biggest organizations to make their IT departments more responsive, more agile.
CollabNet has a long history helping the federal market build quality software at speed, including the Department of Defense (DoD), which is, believe it or not, one of the most active software developers in the world. Federal software needs range widely — from military and defense systems, to communications, command and control and operations — so you can imagine how complex the development and delivery processes have become. With so many layers of DoD software development, corralling the system...
The burgeoning trends around DevOps are translating into new types of IT infrastructure that both developers and operators can take advantage of.
The next BriefingsDirect Voice of the Customer thought leadership discussion focuses on the burgeoning trends around DevOps and how that’s translating into new types of IT infrastructure that both developers and operators can take advantage of.
Cloud Expo 2016 New York at the Javits Center New York was characterized by increased attendance and a new focus on operations. These were both encouraging signs for all involved in Cloud Computing and all that it touches.
As Conference Chair, I work with the Cloud Expo team to structure three keynotes, numerous general sessions, and more than 150 breakout sessions along 10 tracks. Our job is to balance the state of enterprise IT today with the trends that will be commonplace tomorrow.

Security is one of the most controversial topics in the software industry. How do you measure security? Is your favorite software fundamentally insecure? Are Docker containers secure?
Dan Walsh, SELinux architect, wrote: "Some people make the mistake of thinking of containers as a better and faster way of running virtual machines. From a security point of view, containers are much weaker." Meanwhile, James Bottomley, Linux Maintainer and former Parallels CTO, wrote: "There's contentions all ove...
How do you balance the need to “go fast” with the need to test everything and deliver high-quality software?
With applications the driving force in today’s economy, the quality and release cadence of your software are critical to your business and your bottom line. You want to get software updated in the hands of your end users as quickly as possible. However, even the fastest release cycle wouldn’t make a difference if your product ends up being buggy or malfunctioning, resulting in a bad user...
Last week, we hosted a Continuous Discussion (#c9d9) on the challenges of and best practices for creating an internal Dev/Test cloud.
Our expert panel featured Chris Riley, analyst at Fixate IO; Himanshu Chhetri, CTO at Addteq; Kelly Looney, regional consulting manager at Skytap; Phil Doughterty, CEO of Containership.io; and as always, Sam Fell and Anders Wallgren of Electric Cloud.
In this episode, we covered the reasons why you should create a Dev/Test cloud, the challenges involved, and...
More is being required today of network infrastructure than ever before, due in part to the changing latency and bandwidth needs of modern applications. Wide area networks (“WANs”) are feeling the pressure, especially those that use many technologies from different services providers, are geographically diverse and are stretched to the limit by increased video and cloud app usage.
In view of these challenges, hybrid WAN architectures with advanced application-level traffic routing are of parti...
I’m going to cry tonight, long and hard. I’ll do so as I remember and mourn Jeremy Geelan.
I knew Jeremy for almost 20 years, from the time he showed up one day at Cloud Expo’s headquarters in Bergen County, New Jersey, and went to work. The show wasn’t called Cloud Expo then, of course – it was still known as Java Edge, a pioneering event that grabbed developers, architects, and enterprise IT users alike for twice-yearly confabs.
Jeremy didn’t have a job there, or even a job offer. He was s...

In the rush to compete in the digital age, a successful digital transformation is essential, but many organizations are setting themselves up for failure. There’s a common misconception that the process is just about technology, but it’s not. It’s about your business. It shouldn’t be treated as an isolated IT project; it should be driven by business needs with the committed involvement of a range of stakeholders.
While many government agencies have embraced the idea of employing cloud computing as a tool for increasing the efficiency and flexibility of IT, many still struggle with large scale adoption. The challenge is mainly attributed to the federated structure of these agencies as well as the immaturity of brokerage and governance tools and models. Initiatives like FedRAMP are a great first step toward solving many of these challenges but there are a lot of unknowns that are yet to be tackled.

In today's enterprise, digital transformation represents organizational change even more so than technology change, as customer preferences and behavior drive end-to-end transformation across lines of business as well as IT. To capitalize on the ubiquitous disruption driving this transformation, companies must be able to innovate at an increasingly rapid pace.
Traditional approaches for driving innovation are now woefully inadequate for keeping up with the breadth of disruption and change facin...

Automation is a critical component of DevOps and Continuous Delivery.
This morning on #c9d9 we discussed CD Automation and how you can apply Automation to accelerate release cycles, improve quality, safety and governance?
What is the difference between Automation and Orchestration?
Where should you begin your journey to introduce both?
Just last week a senior Hybris consultant shared the story of a customer engagement on which he was working. This customer had problems, serious problems. We’re talking about response times far beyond the most liberal acceptable standard. They were unable to solve the issue in their eCommerce platform – specifically Hybris. Although the eCommerce project was delivered by a system integrator / implementation partner, the vendor still gets involved when things go really wrong. After all, the vendo...
