I had the opportunity to catch up with Chris Corriere - DevOps Engineer at
AutoTrader - to talk about his experiences in the realm of Rugged DevOps.
We discussed automation, culture and collaboration, and which thought
leaders he is following.

Derek Weeks: Today we're going to talk about Rugged DevOps. It's a subject
that's gaining a lot of traction in the community but not a lot of people are
really familiar with what it is.
DW: What's your definition of Rugged DevOps?
CC: Rugged DevOps to me is definitely manifested in the security sector but
it's a shifting quality and awareness left in doing the best we can with the
tools we have, the constraints we're given, and in the environment we're in.

There are few trends in enterprise IT receiving more attention in 2016 than DevOps. A combo of the words "development" and "operations," DevOps is a term that can mean a lot of different things depending on the context. Sometimes it refers to specific software or hardware tools, e.g., a DevOps automation platform for spinning up test labs or sandboxes – but more often it is used to describe a broad new approach to culture within an organization.
These days I mostly make my living as a consultant. Consultants in general are probably not the best loved group in the world. It is common to think of consultants wafting-in to your organization, telling you things that you already know and advising you to “change your culture”, whatever that means. Subsequently they depart, no-doubt with a fat fee, and leave you as you were before with the same problems and no progress made.
If you address the question of how to scale Agile projects by considering what framework to use, you are only looking at one aspect of the problem. Scaling is all about coordination – managing enterprise considerations and cross program dependencies, and the defacto frameworks (SAFe, LeSS and DAD) focus on the people and process dimensions. However, in combination with a factory approach you may be able to automate many of the compliance and dependency management issues.
