What If This Is the Most Important Thing the Government Can Do to Enhance Our Cybersecurity?
In December 1998 when transitioning into a job doing intelligence support to DoD computer network defense, one of my mentors reminded me of a Reagan-era publication that helped the public better understand the Soviet threat called "Soviet Military Power." This document was based on the intelligence. It provided the best possible understanding of Soviet military hardware and operational concepts but was produced at an unclassified level so it could be broadly disseminated. My mentor was making the point to me that in my new role leading intelligence support to operational cyber defense I should champion something analogous in the cyber security domain.
I believe my mentor was right and advocate this idea whenever possible. Consider this theory: if more people are really aware of the cyber threat, they will take action. Citizens will better defend their portions of cyberspace and will also be more informed voters, meaning politicians will be better informed and pay more attention to cyber policy issues. Raising awareness of the cyber threat can also motivate a better the defensive posture of businesses.
I was given reason to think of this topic again on 9 March 2016 when DIA published a video capturing key background on this publication. See it at this link and embedded below:
When you watch that, imagine what something like this could do in the cybersecurity domain.
Do you agree the nation could benefit from something like this produced by the intelligence community focused on the cyber threat?
Till then you have other options on the threat. One I hope you take advantage of is my book The Cyber Threat. And for more operational threat awareness sign up for the Daily Threat Brief.

SYS-CON Events announced today that delaPlex will exhibit at SYS-CON's @ThingsExpo, which will take place on June 7-9, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.

Instead of thinking of the IT environment as being divided into apps, middleware, data, servers, or other IT-centric concepts, the entire enterprise must think about customer journeys and how the various customer interactions (‘moments’ in the vernacular) string together to provide the customer experience each customer desires.
The end result, of course, is maximizing the business key performance indicators, including profitability, revenue per customer, and the lifetime value of each customer. We just arrived at these goals by a different path than we’re used to.
The biggest challenge to IOT is thus big data that requires an infrastructure that is capable of processing billions or more data points each second.
If you thought e-commerce revolutionized the retail industry over the past two decades, something much bigger is coming over the next ten years and that is the Internet of Things (IoT). By deploying sensors and network connectivity to everyday physical objects like cars, refrigerators, television and buildings, it is possible to remotely connect, manage and engage with these entities in ways that are not possible today.
Drones have actually been around for quite some time, even though the recent "lift-off" of commercial applications has vaulted the technology further into the spotlight. I've started seeing some incredible uses of the technology and how not only businesses will benefit, but people as well.
For example, lifeguards and emergency responders have started flying drones as another means to quickly assist swimmers in trouble. By dropping a life jacket as soon as possible, distressed swimmers can get assistance quickly while further assistance is in pursuit of reaching the swimmer in the water.
In t...
Let us face it, there are many technological innovations taking place right now and we’re not short of buzzwords.
Some years ago it was the cloud, last year was Big Data and this year it seems to be the Internet of Things. Beneath all the noise, what matters is whether these things are truly game changers or just noise. Let's take a look at the reality.
Back in the days of our ancestors, the Neanderthals, there was probably a lot of hype around as well. New spear design, new flint stones (not the cartoons), or arrowheads must have made waves. This passed down the ages and possibly a few thou...
Within enterprises – and even small businesses – there are two distinct groups with differing goals, needs and objectives when it comes to business intelligence and analytics strategies. Business users are tasked with analyzing Big Data to help their companies make timely and more meaningful decisions, and as such, require immediate access to a wide variety of sources, including structured, semi-structured, unstructured and streaming data. On the other side of the house, IT professionals are tasked with storing and securing massive data stores, as well as ensuring regulatory compliance of corp...
It's been a busy time for tech's ongoing infatuation with containers. Amazon just announced EC2 Container Registry to simply container management. The new Azure container service taps into Microsoft's partnership with Docker and Mesosphere. You know when there's a standard for containers on the table there's money on the table, too.
Everyone is talking containers because they reduce a ton of development-related challenges and make it much easier to move across production and testing environments and clouds. Containers are the technology that, many believe, deliver on the long-promised port...

Sometime over the last 10 years, the term “cloud” transformed from a big, fluffy collection of water droplets in the sky to the (somewhat daunting) future of IT and a fundamental part of some of the most innovative technologies in the world today. Cloud adoption rates have been increasing steadily over the years due to its compelling economic and technical advantages, allowing organizations to fulfill user requests instantaneously and only for the period of time that they need it. But for every organization that is fearlessly embracing cloud computing and the many benefits it offers, there is ...
Whether intentional or accidental, data leaks are a huge concern for organizations. And it has been for years. Going back to a 2004 survey from an IT security forum hosted by Qualys, found that 67% of security executives do not have controls in place to prevent data leakage, A December 2006 survey, Boston-based researchers Simon Management Group noted that some 78% of respondents said they were "very concerned" about data exposure. A 2010 article published by Trustwave on CSOonline.com said that 65% of leakage occurs due to the following combined methods: Microsoft SMB sharing, Remote Access A...

Join @ThingsExpo conference chair Roger Strukhoff (@IoT2040), June 7-9, 2016 in New York City, for three days of intense 'Internet of Things' discussion and focus, including Big Data's indespensable role in IoT, Smart Grids and Industrial Internet of Things, Wearables and Consumer IoT, as well as (new) IoT's use in Vertical Markets.
From fitness trackers to connected refrigerators to coffee makers, there is no end to how smart even the most inane technology can become. The Internet of Things (IoT) isn’t just changing how consumers manage their home security or order their coffee filters – it’s revolutionizing the very fabric of commerce.
However, according to Gartner, IoT is still in its early days of maturity. Gartner predicts that through 2018 there will be no one prevailing IoT ecosystem platform. This means that in the next few years there will be a proliferation of different devices, products and approaches to IoT. ...
