In my 30-years in the high tech industry I have often heard the business maxim, “Develop a business strategy first, and then find the technology to support it.” This well-worn business doctrine, I have come to believe in this age of digital transformation, is wrong and it is time to repudiate it.
Let me support my argument by first asking a few questions. What came first e-commerce or the Internet? What came first mobile banking, or wireless mobile communications? 
Those that lead are able to collect and analyze data that followers can’t. Think about the first climber to reach the top of the mountain, they have a new and different view slower followers don’t. If you believe, as I do, that understanding data is the secret sauce of the digitally transformed enterprise, then having data not available to your competitors is a treasure! 
Instead of thinking of the IT environment as being divided into apps, middleware, data, servers, or other IT-centric concepts, the entire enterprise must think about customer journeys and how the various customer interactions (‘moments’ in the vernacular) string together to provide the customer experience each customer desires.
The end result, of course, is maximizing the business key performance indicators, including profitability, revenue per customer, and the lifetime value of each customer. We just arrived at these goals by a different path than we’re used to.
Over the last few years, more and more businesses have been embracing the cloud-based technologies for their CRMs, customer service, project development and management, accounting, etc. The reasons of the trend are pretty obvious – all you need to access cloud services are web browser and Internet connection, what allows cloud-based companies to minimize maintenance costs and to boost productivity.
