We can reasonably break down the core imperatives of data analytics into three essential areas. Firms that wish to gain the full potential out of engaging in data analytics today are obliged to at least recognize these rudimentary cornerstones as the central building blocks of data intelligence:
- Prepare
- Model
- Automate
By way of clarification, there are probably a whole lot more than three steps to consider here - but calling out this threesome is a prudent step in what (for many IT shops) are still early days with technologies such as Hadoop and its wider world of Big Data.
Data preparation
It's a simple statement to make, but before we can start to work with data it has to be prepared. Before we get to the insightful insights involving dashboards, we need to subject data to combined stages of both machine and human processing.
If we have to define this action, we can say that data preparation is a procedure for gathering, cleaning, amalgamating and consolidating our target information sources into one location (a file, database or table). This process also covers the error correction, merging of data sources, deduplication of extraneous data and accommodating for areas where nulls and zeros exist (or where the data is incomplete in some other way) so that we can progress to building our data model.
Data preparation may also incorporate ‘data enrichment,' i.e., the augmentation of one core set of data with additional intelligence sourced from some other disconnected data stream.
For want of an example here, preparing a movie database would include names of movies with actors' names and movie names and years. But it could also include the interrelationship between actors who have been in the same movie together, or a group of movies that have all been made in the same year and so on. Enrichment could come from identifying background information on actors, directors and more.

Data modeling
Given the myriad and often unanticipated ways data can be consumed, it can be risky to normalize (or integrate) data too far in advance as part of the preparation process... so as we come out of stage one, we enter our data modeling phase.
Data modeling gives us the ability to decide how various elements of data relate to each other and how the heart of the data will behave inside our chosen database. Put simply, data modeling is the classification, documentation and formalization of procedures and events involved within the software in hand. Potentially hugely complex as an overall task, data modeling tools help capture and translate multifaceted system designs into representations of data that are more easily comprehended.
For a retail firm approaching its first major implementation of Big Data analytics, the ability to model the data form allows the business function to specify and describe all the myriad components of the business into data. The model here would include price, product, size, shape, product type, product variants and perhaps also special offers, i.e., the elements of the retail data universe are large.
As complex as data modeling is, the industry now provides drag-and-drop functionality in a variety of products and services to make the entire process easier to manage.
Automate
If you ask a technology evangelist to name the top ten trends for the next half-decade of computing, then ‘automation' will be one of the terms highlighted. Today we understand automation to be the elements within a software data system that we ‘could' build from scratch, but (and here's the crucial point) these are elements that we can more productively find in tools provided by specialists in this layer of computing.
Take the construction of a marketing software system (for example) as a productive and beneficial place to bring in automation software. Automation controls here could include process-driven campaign workflows, built in Business Intelligence (BI), campaign sharing and reuse options, integrated checklists and elements relating to design and navigation. When subject to the positive force of automation, these tasks become more efficient from front to back.
What this brief tour of Big Data shows us, if anything, is that data analytics is no plug-and-play process. There are multifarious multifaceted stages and steps to be aware of. But if we approach this task studiously and in a Zen-like one step at a time fashion, then we can make analytics work for us and our business.
It's as simple as one, two, three - well, kind of.

No matter how resiliently you build your application, incidents will happen. And as your application grows, the complexity of troubleshooting and resolving an incident also grows. With prior virtualization technologies, this might involve a virtualization admin, a network admin, a storage admin, and an applications developer to sort through the issue, put a resolution in place, and determine a root cause. With microservices architectures and Docker containers, this complexity is taken to the nex...
APIs have taken the world by storm in recent years.
The use of APIs has gone beyond just traditional "software" companies, to companies and organizations across industries using APIs to share information and power their applications.
For some organizations, APIs are the biggest revenue drivers. For example, Salesforce generates nearly 50% of annual revenue through APIs. In other cases, APIs can increase a business's footprint and initiate collaboration. Netflix, for example, reported over 5 bi...
Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor – all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. OK so here goes: why is DevOps not always the right way to go? Simply because not all systems are born equal. For a backend master customer data system, stability trumps iteration. Clearly these enterprises still need to innovate and provide new and exciting ways for their customers to engage through web and mobile, ...
Today most enterprises are undergoing massive shifts under the name digital transformation. Let’s say you successfully navigate this transformation. Will you be done? Of course not – change will be ongoing and even accelerating.
So, is it good enough to struggle through one transformation after another? Or is the more strategic decision to become better able to deal with such change – in other words, to be more agile?

If you’re not employing DevOps tools and methods, chances are your software delivery deployment practices look something like this:
It takes you weeks, sometimes months to deploy new software to production.
You test for bugs and try to pinpoint why your deployment only works in the development environment and not the production one.
Because your development and operational teams are separated, there is a lack of clear communication and instruction between the two, leading to a wide range of i...
With new virtualization tools popping up seemingly everywhere, you might wonder why so many testers, developers, QA Engineers, and Operations professionals are virtualizing their web services.

One of the most common early goals of implementing DevOps principles is a deep understanding of our systems in a stable state. However, this objective is not a “once and done” effort. It is important to continuously circle back in some form (a feedback loop) as changes are introduced. It’s an ongoing exercise for an entire organization as our processes, tools, and teams improve continuously over time.
Gone are the days when SOAP, REST and microservices were buzzwords that did not apply to you.
Gone are also the days when monolithic applications were built by organizations end-end.
The availability of specialized components and services from different organizations and the access to these components through RESTful services has resulted in a major inflexion point with APIs becoming the mechanism for data interchange and systems to interact.
Most organizations are familiar with the benefits ...
If your website receives heavy traffic and you are hosted across multiple infrastructures across the world or you are using multiple CDNs, then you ought to use a DNS Load Balancer to reroute traffic for better performance.

Most of the above ...
The rise of microservices has enabled teams to branch out from developing for innately complicated, monolithic applications and work with small, flexible and comparatively simple components. But when these components (numbering anywhere from the hundreds to the thousands for one application) need to work together, traditional tools and release processes can be lacking. Organizations need to adopt new delivery models, release strategies and tooling that can handle this new multitude of services ...
While test management can sometimes be viewed as a blocker on Agile teams, there are a number of benefits of test management that can't be ignored. This is especially true for teams that want to improve their efficiency and avoid costly setbacks.
By improving efficiency and reducing waste in the testing process, test management helps to better prioritize while simultaneously reducing the time teams spend on problems after the software is delivered.
CEOs across the globe now view business technology as a key component of their growth strategies. That’s why the role of today’s Chief Information Officer (CIO) has become increasingly challenging. Mounting pressure to innovate has left many CIOs flat-footed -- essentially playing catch-up trying to integrate new technologies, rather than driving them.
In part one of this series, "Rugged DevOps: Survival is Not Mandatory", I shared news that 1 in 16 open source and third-party components downloaded last year included a known vulnerability. That may not seem like too many until you realize the average company downloads well over 200,000 components annually. These components are electively downloaded by development teams, often unaware of the vulnerabilities that come with them.
Manually reviewing every component you desire to download and use...
