The beauty of PowerShell is that it also provides you with PowerShell ISE, which is an integrated scripting environment that "helps you compose, debug, manage and run Windows PowerShell script files." This book gives any interested party a good overview of how PowerShell is put together and how it works. PowerShell is different than other scripting languages in that while it uses pipes, it does not pass text but rather passes objects from one pipe to another. The author stresses over and over the many avenues where help is available.
As I mentioned, I am not an administrator and as such there were certain chapters in the book that had no relevance to me. However, the author does a wonderful job of explaining each topic in a clear manner. For instance, there is a chapter on calling SQL Server from inside of PowerShell. That is a handy and powerful ability to have.
The exercises at the end of each chapter serve as a good review and as stimulation to dig deeper into the product. This is a very well written book. The author is a very good writer and educator. I hope he follows through with his promise to write a book on PowerShell scripting as I would very much look forward to reading it.

Our guest on the podcast this week is Jason Parsons, Senior Architect and Big Data expert at Cloud Technology Partners. We discuss the benefits of real-time, big data processing in the cloud and why some companies are hesitant to migrate from their traditional data centers. Jason explains why planning is key when moving from on-premise centers and why all companies should begin their cloud initiatives with a minimum viable product before going into full production.
Storage is moving to flash, and flash is getting faster, so people keep asking me why I keep talking about latency as if there is a problem. Isn’t faster flash going to just make everything faster? Won’t “the rising tide lift all boats”?
Flash media as a storage media is indeed “faster” than the spinning hard-disks we’ve all been using for decades. But when it is used to simulate a hard disk, as is the case with SSD products, there are software layers which prevent it from reaching its full potential. That explanation always gets heads nodding, because it is obvious. But what about when ...
The evolution of JavaScript and HTML 5 to support a genuine component based framework (Web Components) with the necessary tools to deliver something close to a native experience including genuine realtime networking (UDP using WebRTC). HTML5 is evolving to offer built in templating support, the ability to watch objects (which will speed up Angular) and Web Components (which offer Angular Directives). The native level support will offer a massive performance boost to frameworks having to fake all these features like Polymer and Angular. It will also encourage people who are not familiar with th...
Our guest on the podcast this week is Preeti Somal, VP of Engineering at Yahoo. We discuss the cloud challenges that come with supporting over a billion consumers per day at Yahoo. One way the Yahoo team simplifies this is through automation and smarter monitoring. Yahoo also leverages open source projects such as Hadoop and OpenStack, which helps onboard employees through their many mergers and acquisitions.
As the Cloud becomes more of a norm as part of enterprise computing, enterprises now have to deal with the issue of how to ensure that the applications effectively use the attributes of cloud. There are monolithic applications of the previous era that are continuing to be migrated to the cloud using a lift and shift approach or with minimal changes, they do get benefitted with certain attributes of cloud like availability and management, but there is also emerging a new set of application architecture namely the ‘cloud native applications.'
Believe it or not, the first data backups were made on paper. Dating back as early as the 18th century, the "technology" was used in the form of paper tapes constructed from punch cards to control the functions of automated machinery such as textile looms. The concept of these cards was then further developed by IBM in the early days of data processing, where data input, storage and commands were captured using a series of hole punches.
In 1956, IBM introduced the 350 disk storage unit - the first ever hard disk drive. It was 60 inches in length, stood nearly 70 inches tall and had a capaci...
Over the last few weeks I was fortunate to meet a large number of Managed Service Providers (MSPs) at two separate industry events in Toronto. At both these events, focused on MSPs, and through all my conversations, one thing that resonated throughout was the dire state in which Managed Service Providers are currently conducting business. I am sharing my thoughts to help make sense of what the industry is going through and how the inability to adapt can lead to the slow death of an otherwise highly successful industry.
Researchers at Binghamton University recently became the first to create an open source graphics processor unit (GPU). The GPU they created, called Nyami, is appropriate for general purposes as well as graphics-specific work.
Nyami is significant in the research, computing and open source communities because it marks the first time open source has been used to design a GPU, as well as the first time a research team was able to test how different hardware and software configurations affect GPU performance. The results of the experiments the researchers performed are now part of the open sour...
For years, conversation about the Internet of Things (IoT) and monetization were treated as just that – conversations about future possibilities with no actual plan put in place to move the conversation forward. But times are changing and people are starting to really catch on. There are few trends in enterprise IT receiving more attention in 2016 than DevOps. A combo of the words "development" and "operations," DevOps is a term that can mean a lot of different things depending on the context. Sometimes it refers to specific software or hardware tools, e.g., a DevOps automation platform for spinning up test labs or sandboxes – but more often it is used to describe a broad new approach to culture within an organization.
Back in October, my son’s robotics team said “Hey! You work for a software company, can you build us an application that will help us with scouting and competitions?” Foolishly, ego stepped in before a careful outsourced review of my existing skills could take place, so I said “Sure! Not a web developer, but how hard could it be?”
Seriously… how hard could this be? I see web application traffic all the time. On the wire. And I can even manipulate that traffic at the protocol level and do amazing things with it programmatically. But…changing application traffic in flight is not development of ...
Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor – all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. As Agile has settled in as a mainstream practice, now DevOps has emerged as the next wave to improve software delivery speed and output. To make DevOps work, organizations must focus on what is most relevant to deliver value, reduce IT complexity, create more repeatable...
I don't think we take competition serious enough. I don't think we fully understand how important digital transformation is, and the far-reaching economic implications of not competing effectively. In 2014 in a discussion about the struggling Finnish economy, Mr Stubb, the former prime minister of Finland, told a newspaper, "Steve Jobs took our [country's] jobs." His words describe the severe impact of not competing effectively on a nation's economy. In a global market innovation and competition from the other side of the world can powerfully and rapidly impact the local economy for good o...
