Microservices are all the rage right now - and the industry is still learning, experimenting, and developing patterns, for successfully designing, deploying and managing Microservices in the real world.
Are you considering jumping on the Microservices-wagon? Do Microservices make sense for your particular use case? What are some of the "gotchas" you should be aware of?
This morning on #c9d9 we had experts from popular chat app Kik, SMB SaaS platformYodle and hosted CI solution Semaphore share their journey and learnings from decomposing their monolithic application into Microservices.
With Microservices, what was once one application, with self-contained processes, is now a complex set of orchestrated services that connect via the network.
- What are the benefits of Microservices and why do organizations consider microservices-based architectures?
- What are some of the challenges with Microservices - both from a design perspective and from an operational perspective?
- How do they impact your pipeline(s)?
- What are some best practices for enabling CD for your microservices-driven application?
Also, we discuss what Microservices have to do with 1970's network packet routing, DLL versions, distributed programming, Pipeline-as-code, dependency management, and more. Watch the replay of the episode to learn best practices for decomposing your monolithic application into Microservices, and some tools and libraries to get you started on your journey.

If you read the title and assumed this post would be filled with baseball analogies, you’d be right! It’s game day and all those fans who fill up major league stadiums, those are your application users. They are invested in the game and have shown up to watch the players (i.e., your application) perform.
Depending on how the game plays out, your audience will either head home elated or full of disappointment. The great thing is that in your case, unlike in the case of traditional baseball games...
If you’re looking to predict how things should work in the future, start by looking in the right places in the present. Innovations in technology, management and collaboration that will change the way we work are already up and running in visionary organizations. A few weeks ago my colleague PJ Hagerty wrote about driving your existing monolithic application toward a more modular design. This time around I'll dive a little bit deeper into its importance and the benefits of application modularization.
One of the most important best practices in application development is testing, and more specifically automated and continuous testing. When your application is a monolith with multiple functionalities and responsibilities, automated testing becomes massiv...

Electric Cloud CEO, Steve Brodie, recently had the honor of speaking at an internal symposium at one of the largest banks in the United States about the benefits of DevOps for Financial Services (Finserv).
Today, applications are the lifeblood of the business, and nowhere is that more true than in Financial Services, who rely on software to create economic value. Advances in virtualization, data integration, and consumer demand for new functionality have increased the pressure of these organiza...
On a recent road trip I was reminded about the importance of DevOps feedback loops and application supportability.
I enjoy driving into the Australian outback. This probably explains why I prefer to take the back roads. On my last trip I did just that; forgoing the fast highway for a more sedate but picturesque route. Deciding to fill up at a small country town gas station on my way home I hit a snag. The marvelous electronic park brake system wouldn’t disengage. It was late and I was stuck up ...

How is your DevOps transformation coming along? How do you measure Agility? Reliability? Efficiency? Quality? Success?! How do you optimize your processes? This morning on #c9d9 we talked about some of the metrics that matter for the different stakeholders throughout the software delivery pipeline. Our panelists shared their best practices.
Imagine that you are designing the 2017 Ford Mustang. Like all gas-powered vehicles, each one needs an exhaust muffler. Ford has already vetted and narrowed in on a preferred provider of mufflers. But imagine what would happen if the designers and factory line workers could pick from any one of 20+ past versions of that exhaust muffler from any provider for the new model year—even if that part is outdated, has lower performance, does not meet current emission standards or has a known defect.
Here in the US, the Super Bowl is more than just a football game - it's a national holiday, with its own traditions, festivities, and food and drinks.
One of the most important aspects of super bowl is the commercials.
Every year, brands spend millions of dollars to get the attention of the more than 120 million Super Bowl viewers. The Wall Street Journal created this brilliant interactive chart of past ad spending. We are sure that the all industries outdid themselves in terms of spending ag...
We've said it on this blog before, and we'll repeat the same message: Solving a software engineering problem is simple physics. It takes a set amount of energy to move a project from point A to point B, and changing the process or path doesn't change the unavoidable fact that difficult software problems are difficult to solve. DevOps integration is no different.
If you have a complex, highly-orchestrated release no amount of automation can change the fact that the large, successful systems foun...
For microservices to work in an organization, there must be a business initiative attached to it. Questions arise among IT professionals on whether microservices are suited only for giant Web applications like Google and Facebook. However, scale is only one of the business benefits of microservices.
In today’s computing environment, innovation and speed are critical. The movement toward microservices is generated by the need to create new software that can enhance and improve a monolithic syste...
Agile software development is slowly but surely becoming the norm for a significant contingency of software developers. What used to be rigid, step-by-step processes that were siloed between specific teams have transformed into a collaborative, adaptive methodology that ultimately leads to the creation of superior solutions.
As an integral component of software development, agile test management has also been evolving to be more accommodating to agile processes. Testing automation in particular...
Teams that have embraced DevOps and begun using the practice of test driven development are familiar with the headaches that accompany testing legacy code.
This is particularly true for companies that have applications out in production that have been working for years, but have no formal tests or testing regiment associated with its codebase.
Most of the time the physical code for the applications is known; many times it is not. In fact, both the code and the developer who wrote the code mi...
There is a large gap between the understanding of modern processes and technologies, and actually doing something with them. In the DevOps movement, many of the core functions have met wide adoption, such as orchestration, release automation, and analytics. But what have not been as widely adopted are the end-to-end processes of continuous delivery and deployment, which is not a case of understanding — It is dictated by existing organizational elements and practicality. Are you ready for continu...
