I recently caught up with a former co-worker who now runs an information
security program for a well-known retailer. While discussing new advances in
cloud security and technology, he mentioned that his company had met with a
provider that presented him with a mind-numbing number of deployment options
for their solution. Some of the options rattled off included forward and
reverse proxies; public, private, hybrid, and cloud versions of their
product; an on-premise version; and packaging in an appliance or a box that
could be racked in a data center.
Undoubtedly, a list of options this long provides increased flexibility to
deploy solutions in a way that makes the most sense on a company-to-company
basis. However, as deployment options increase, so does the complexity of
creating a successful plan for deployment. In the list below, I'll provide
helpful tips for bala... (more)
DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us.
The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days.
We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually
standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people!
My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with
RingCentral on Devops for BigData.
I also participated in two Power Panels - ‘Women in Technology' and ‘Why
DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,' both featuring brilliant
colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.

To manage complex web services with lots of calls to the cloud, many

Internet visibility.
Internet connectivity has always played a role in customer access to web
presence, but in the past few years use of the Internet in the web experience

I've done a Windows Azure Series together with Mario Szpusta, Software
Architect Evangelist at Microsoft Austria on Windows Azure. The Series is in
German and I decided to bring it to Cloud Computing Journal. I will modify
some of the articles to bring them up-to-date. This series will cover about
15 articles that will be published once a week.
What Is Windows Azure?
Windows Azure is Microsoft's Platform as a Service offering for Cloud
Computing. There are three major fields in Windows Azure. Figure 1 provides
an overview of the platform.

The three fields are Windows A... (more)
Butch Cassidy and Sundance are staring over the edge of the cliff:
Butch: Alright. I'll jump first.
Sundance: No.
Butch: Then you jump first.
Sundance: No, I said.
Butch: What's the matter with you?
Sundance: I can't swim.
Butch: Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you.
What's with the Butch & Sundance quote, you ask? This classic scene from
"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" illustrates an issue I see every day
when talking to customers: focusing so much on one problem, they fail to
appreciate the magnitude of another. As enterprises and software companies
