Digital Transformation is the ultimate goal of cloud computing and related
initiatives. The phrase is certainly not a precise one, and as subject to
hand-waving and distortion as any high-falutin' terminology in the world of
information technology.
Yet it is an excellent choice of words to describe what enterprise IT-and by
extension, organizations in general-should be working to achieve.
Digital Transformation means:
handling all the data types being found and created in the organization
understanding that through mobility, data is being generated and analyzed on
the edges of the enterprise more than at the center
mixing and matching that data in an ecosystem of specific, loosely connected
applications and services
automating processes; analyzing and acting upon data in short timeframes to
develop, improve, and enhance products and services directly through IT

People have re-entered the picture in discussions about cloud computing.
This was my primary takeaway from this year's Cloud Expo New York, an event
for which I serve as Conference Chair.
Over three days, we hosted thousands of delegates attending sessions from
more than 150 speakers, including two prominent women as keynoters, and a
range of topics that covered not only enterprise cloud in general, but
microservices and containers, Big Data and the IoT, WebRTC, software-defined
most-anything, an emerging DevOps culture... and people.

Andi Mann has been serving as Conference Chair of the DevOps Summit since its
inception. He is one of the world's recognized leaders in DevOps, and
continues to be one of its most articulate advocates. Here are some recent
thoughts of his in an interview we conducted in the run-up to the DevOps
Summit to be held June 9-11 at the Javits Center in New York City.
When did you first start thinking about DevOps and its potential impact on
enterprise IT?
Andi: I first started thinking about DevOps back in 2010, when I was an IT
industry analyst. It was an intriguing concept, but initia... (more)
The gold bubble has burst. The dollar is up, and the price of oil is down.
All that nasty talk about replacing the dollar as the world's currency has
abated for now. Good. Maybe we can get back to the basics of business.
But there are some things rotten in America.
Rose-Garden Politics
Politically, the United States seems to be in an era similar to the English
Wars of the Roses, in which two powerful families seem so intent on killing
off each other off that they make take the nation down with them. Flying the
blue-rose banner, the Kennedy-turned-Clinton dynasty.

Who doesn't like a clever turn of phrase? Docker CEO Ben Golub (pictured
below) provided several from the recent Red Hat Summit in answering our
questions about virtualization, Big Data, and DevOps.
With Cloud Expo now approaching, I see a lot of the big issues that will be
raised there being raised here. Ben, take it away...
Roger: Could you explain for our audience the significance of
containerization, and how it differs from virtualization?
Ben: Traditional virtualization was created over a decade ago, when
applications were long-lived, monolithic, and deployed to a single serv... (more)
