From IT Service Management to DevOps
CIOs and those charged with running IT Operations are challenged to deliver
secure, audited, and reliable compute environments for the applications and
data for the business. Behind the scenes these tasks are often accomplished
by following onerous time-consuming processes and often the management of
these environments and processes will be outsourced to multiple IT service
providers. In addition, the division of work is often siloed into traditional
"towers" that are not well integrated for cross-functional purposes. So, when
traditional IT Service Management (ITSM) meets the cloud, and equally,
DevOps, there is invariably going to be conflict.
IT/ESM needs a reboot. As a factor of IT Transformation and Digital
Transformation, IT no longer stands alone - or at least in a modern workplace
it should not stand alone - it is the h... (more)

New API = ChatOps Goodness
By Jason Hand
About this time last year, I began writing ChatOps For Dummies, which was
released in early 2015. The concept of ChatOps was one that fascinated me and
I’ve spent a great deal of time writing, talking, and presenting on it all
over the country.
ChatOps is simply the practice of moving context or actions (or both) into a
group chat tool. By doing so, teams across an entire organization can share
the ingestion of critical information, actions, and their related
conversations. By bringing all of this together into a single interface, a

Docker + Solr How-to: Monitoring the Official Solr Docker Image
By Stefan Thies
The official Solr Image on Docker Hub was released just a few weeks ago and
already has 16K pulls. Why not more? Well, there are more than 200 different
Solr images on Docker Hub — probably because no official Image was
available!
A rapidly growing number of organizations are using Solr and Docker in
production and they are probably happy about the new official Image. Needless
to say, monitoring Solr is essential in production. Docker is disruptive in
many ways, and there are many things that are slig... (more)

@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan DevOps has often been described in terms of CAMS: Culture, Automation, Measuring, Sharing. While we’ve seen a lot of focus on the “A” and even on the “M”, there are very few examples of why the “C" is equally important in the DevOps equation.
In her session at @DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, of F5 Networks, explored HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 along with Microservices to illustrate why a collaborative culture between Dev, Ops, and the Network is critical to ensuring success. Jan. 22, 2016 12:00 PM EST Reads: 553 | By Elizabeth White As the Internet of Things becomes more capable, moving from an initial ad hoc bundle of chaos to an optimized set of interconnected assets, we will need to ensure it performs and is reliable.
But this means the tools measuring the performance and reliability of the IoT will also need to mature as the need for timely, understandable, quality, business-critical information becomes paramount. Sensors that are malfunctioning, devices that are offline, data that’s little more than noise can all scut... Jan. 22, 2016 08:15 AM EST Reads: 406 | By Elizabeth White Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the backend service, and the mobile application for the end user’s controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/target – ... Jan. 22, 2016 07:45 AM EST Reads: 872 | By Laureen Fagan Radical business transformation is an essential part of business growth, but that transformation is dependent more on process than it is technology – and on creating a culture of change within the business that has buy-in at every level. Technology vendors often tout the transformative potential of products, but when those initiatives fail to deliver? A company must take a deeper look at the reasons because it may not be the vendor or flaw in the technology, so much as the problem lies within th... Jan. 22, 2016 07:00 AM EST Reads: 163 | By Elizabeth White Clearly the way forward is to move to cloud be it bare metal, VMs or containers. One aspect of the current public clouds that is slowing this cloud migration is cloud lock-in. Every cloud vendor is trying to make it very difficult to move out once a customer has chosen their cloud.
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Naveen Nimmu, CEO of Clouber, Inc., advocated that making the inter-cloud migration as simple as changing airlines would help the entire industry to quickly adopt the cloud without ... Jan. 22, 2016 07:00 AM EST Reads: 857 | By Elizabeth White Between the compelling mockups and specs produced by analysts, and resulting applications built by developers, there exists a gulf where projects fail, costs spiral, and applications disappoint. Methodologies like Agile attempt to address this with intensified communication, with partial success but many limitations.

Jan. 22, 2016 06:00 AM EST Reads: 743 | By Pat Romanski Automating AWS environments is important for all businesses as it simplifies creation and setup of cloud resources, facilitates otherwise complex processes, and streamlines management. The benefits of automation are clear: accelerate execution, reduce human error and unwanted consequences, and increase the enterprise’s ability to rapidly adapt, all while reducing the overall cost of IT operations.
