Every physical object or “thing” that can be embedded with sensors will be embedded with sensors. Whether you call it the Internet of Things, the Internet of Everything, M2M, a smarter planet, the Industrial Internet or something else, the trend is clear. With so much activity and interest, it is unfortunate that a de facto communications standard has not emerged. However, there is progress (or managed conflict) in the right direction.
Three major factors are converging to make smart cities a reality: the exponential advances in information and communications technologies (ICT), rapidly expanding applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the fast-paced advancements in machines that are already going beyond their basic functionalities. Technology can contribute in many ways to the development of smart infrastructure. However, it’s the interactions between people and the machines that are integral to the social, cultural and economic life of these smart cities. 
BI Intelligence reports that the number of IoT devices installed in cities will increase by more than 5 billion in the next four years, creating a massive opportunity for IoT hardware manufacturers and software vendors. Manufacturers themselves stand to benefit from modernizing their processes and are already spending considerable amounts of money on mobilizing the enterprise, including connecting employees, products, services and machines/vehicles. Part of the difficulty in procuring “predictions” for something like the Internet of Things is that the possibilities are truly endless. We know that “IoT” as a concept will increasingly touch on almost every single facet of our daily lives with each passing month, so part of the excitement is being attuned to the new concepts, technologies and thought leaders that seem to pop up near daily. It is an interesting time to be both a creator and user of technology!
It’s that time of year when we gift and re-gift, just like this text from last year. And the perfect opportunity to re-post, re-purpose and re-use all my 2015 blog entries.
