Cisco Keynote: The Internet of Everything: Seizing the Opportunities
Converging digital disruptions is creating a major sea change - Cisco calls this the Internet of Everything (IoE). IoE is the network connection of People, Process, Data and Things, fueled by Cloud, Mobile, Social, Analytics and Security, and it represents a $19Trillion value-at-stake over the next 10 years.
In her keynote at @ThingsExpo, Manjula Talreja, VP of Cisco Consulting Services, discussed IoE and the enormous opportunities it provides to public and private firms alike. She also shared what businesses must do to thrive in the IoE economy, citing examples from several industry sectors.
Microservices & IoT Power Panel at @ThingsExpo New York
In this Power Panel at @DevOpsSummit, moderated by Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx, panelists Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President at Akana; Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks; and Troy Topnik, ActiveState's Technical Product Manager; and Otis Gospodnetić, founder of Sematext; peeled away the buzz and discuss the important architectural principles behind implementing IoT solutions for the enterprise. As remote IoT devices and sensors become increasingly intelligent, they become part of our distributed cloud environment, and we must architect and code accordingly. At the very least, you'll have no problem filling in your buzzword bingo cards.

Containers & Microservices Expo to Be Colocated with @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley, November 3-5, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA
SYS-CON Events announced on June 9, 2015 at the Javits Center that the 2nd "Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, and the "Third Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place June 7-9, 2016, at Javits Center in New York City.
Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.

I am not a data scientist or an expert in knowing how to build candlestick charts from historical stock prices. I am however a data enthusiast and it fascinates me when I hear people talk about Big Data, like they invented it. Sorry, no offense meant, but really how did we just jump to Big Data without even creating an understanding about any kind of data?

The iteration of constraints and initial conditions that drive and influence self-organization within the enterprise is the actual role of an architect who is architecting emergent behavior – in particular, business agility. You may call such activities something else – management practice or some such – and to be sure, we must reinvent management practice along the same lines as EA. But whatever we call it, there needs to be an understanding that creating the conditions that lead to effective self-organizing teams is itself an architectural activity, an activity separate from the architectura...
The phrase that whoever “Fails to Plan” actually “Plans to Fail” also applies to cloud computing. Many organisations are therefor putting together a cloud strategy. The question is whether the establishment of a company-wide cloud strategy is the right way. Martin Fowler describes how infrastructure automation is a key enabler of microservices:
“Many of the products or systems being build with microservices are being built by teams with extensive experience of Continuous Delivery and it’s precursor, Continuous Integration. Teams building software this way make extensive use of infrastructure automation techniques. This is illustrated in the build pipeline shown below.”
While we were busy throwing parts of our organizations into the cloud, and (for those who don’t count it as cloud) SaaS, while we were moving parts of our organization over to Python, or Node, or Swift, while we were looking into Software Defined Everything, and containers started sounding like the hosting spot for a humongous jigsaw puzzle, something was growing that we should be paying more attention to.

Today, we’re going to talk about the Internet of Things and Big Data.
Bear with me here. This isn’t going to be some vague, half-cocked article bogged down by buzzwords and vagaries. Instead, what we’re going to do is take a close look at both technologies - what they actually are and what they actually do - in regards to how they’re changing enterprise.
More importantly, we’re going to put forth an explanation of how inextricably the two are connected - and how, by understanding that connection, one’s business can set itself well ahead of the competition. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Let...
Test-Driven Development is a great tool for functional testing, but can you apply the same technique to performance testing? Why not? The purpose of TDD is to build out small unit tests, or scenarios, under which you control your initial coding. Your tests will fail the first time you run them because you haven’t actually developed any code. But once you do start coding, you’ll end up with just enough code to pass the test. There’s no reason the same philosophy can’t be applied to performance testing.
Enterprise networks have become complex. They were designed and deployed to meet a specific set of business requirements at a specific point in time. Configuration modifications were rare, and manual or semi-automated processes together with strict change control procedures were enough to maintain reliability and consistent service levels across the organization.
Business needs have shifted dramatically. The adoption of cloud services, business application-focused requirements and evolving security policies require IT organizations to continuously deploy configuration changes. The common appr...
Forward-thinking CEOs ensure that their organization has access to the latest digital business technologies. But in today’s global networked economy, that’s not enough. If you believe that digital transformation knowledge is power, then fully mastering the ability to apply your IT capabilities into actionable wisdom is infinitely more potent.
The Harvard Business Review (HBR) market research team recently completed a global study of the path that several organizations have taken to develop and deliver the digital learning support resources that their key internal stakeholders both need and ...
In the 1970s, a psychologist named Noel Burch created a learning model to describe how humans go through four stages of learning when introduced to a new skill.
This model is known as “The Four Stages of Competence”. In my latest post on Forbes I use this model to describe how organizations traverse the learning process as they start adopting the cloud.
The evolution of JavaScript and HTML 5 to support a genuine component based framework (Web Components) with the necessary tools to deliver something close to a native experience including genuine realtime networking (UDP using WebRTC). HTML5 is evolving to offer built in templating support, the ability to watch objects (which will speed up Angular) and Web Components (which offer Angular Directives). The native level support will offer a massive performance boost to frameworks having to fake all these features like Polymer and Angular. It will also encourage people who are not familiar with th...
