According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology:
"Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand
network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g.,
networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly
provisioned and released with minimal management."
While this definition is broadly accepted and has, in fact, been my adopted
standard for years, it only describes technical aspects of cloud computing.
The amalgamation of technologies used to deliver cloud services is not even
half the story. Above all else, the successful employment requires a tight
linkage to the economic and business models of the enterprise. Critical
components for any transition to cloud include:
Enterprise economic model Organizational goals (financial and operational)

How to Establish Security and Privacy "Due Diligence" in the Cloud
The traditional, on-premise computing model has established processes,
accreditations, certifications, governance and compliance rules - FISMA, NERC
CIP, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, IRS 1075. While the security industry is aggressively
addressing the technical security gaps in cloud-driven services, many
organizations using cloud services are struggling to implement and adapt
strategic processes, procedures, and controls for cloud governance and due
diligence.
In her session at 17th Cloud Expo, Maria C. Horton, Founder and C... (more)
Cybersecurity is top of mind for corporations around the world. The quantity
of recent data breaches and the dollar loss associated with some of them
indicates either an underinvestment in cybersecurity or a failure to properly
invest in people, security training or technology. While breaches are very
costly to the companies concerned, they also represent major consequences for
individual privacy and a business's short-term and long-term viability.
With this as a backdrop, I spoke with Curtis Hutcheson, VP and GM, Dell
Security, at Dell Peak Performance. During the conversation, h... (more)
"Threats are always evolving and the days of ‘set it and forget it' malware
and virus scanners are over if you want to keep your business information
secure," explained Abel Sussman, Director of Federal Services at Coalfire, in
this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff.
Cloud Computing Journal: Security threats seem so widespread and diverse that
it seems companies need a framework before they tackle individual issues. To
what degree do you take this point of view?
Abel Sussman: Fortunately there are many frameworks available for the
industry to review a... (more)

@ThingsExpo Stories By Carmen Gonzalez Who are you? How do you introduce yourself? Do you use a name, or do you greet a friend by the last four digits of his social security number? Assuming you don’t, why are we content to associate our identity with 10 random digits assigned by our phone company? Identity is an issue that affects everyone, but as individuals we don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Dufour, Head of Security Architecture, IoT, Webroot, Inc., will discuss how through the use of Big Data analytics and deep data correlation across different threat types, it is possible to gain a better understanding of where, how and to what level of danger a malicious actor poses to an organization, and to determine the measures to implement to prevent future occurrences. Oct. 31, 2015 06:00 AM EDT Reads: 455 | By Pat Romanski The security devil is always in the details of the attack: the ones you've endured, the ones you prepare yourself to fend off, and the ones that, you fear, will catch you completely unaware and defenseless. The Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing if not an endless proliferation of details. It's the vision of a world in which continuous Internet connectivity and addressability is embedded into a growing range of human artifacts, into the natural world, and even into our smartphones, appliances, and physical persons.

Oct. 30, 2015 03:00 PM EDT Reads: 361 | By Liz McMillan Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the back-end service, and the mobile application for the end user’s controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/target – this makes the integration of these separate pipelines and the coordination of software updates for... Oct. 30, 2015 03:00 PM EDT Reads: 472 | By Pat Romanski Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.
