Cloud Expo Presentation: The Cloud Needs to Look More Like the Data Center
One key element that is often missing in the avid discussions on what's
keeping more enterprises out of the cloud is a common recognition that
storage in the cloud is simply not what it should be. It may surprise you,
but to a large degree the solution to some of the cloud's biggest concerns -
such as security, compliance, control and complexity - has to do with
storage.
So what's wrong with storage in the cloud?
Unlike compute or networking in the cloud, storage in the cloud is very
different from the storage enterprises use in their own data centers. If we
look at cloud compute, the VMs are exactly the same as those you would
provision in your own data center; networking is very similar: Internet

DevOps is an exciting and far-reaching shift in IT delivery. The promises are
tempting: radically higher productivity, lower cost and more reliable
systems.
So I guess it’s finally time for your IT organization to get on the
development-operations (DevOps) bandwagon, right? Everybody’s doing it, so
don’t delay. The big question isn’t whether, but how and where do you
start?
First, go out and hire some DevOps people. Wait, wait – DevOps isn’t a
job.
Okay, so you should create a DevOps group or department, right? A great team
of people you can train up on DevOps led by a directo... (more)
It is hard to believe that there was a time when "the cloud" didn't exist.
Then, maybe 50 years ago, a lot of cloud-like things started to happen, such
as remote computing, networked computing, resource sharing, virtual networks,
and then, eventually, the Internet. But it still wasn't the cloud.
Large-scale virtualization of computing and increasingly powerful ways of
managing and sharing that computing power resulted in the term "the cloud."
Everything was up in the air for a while as various vendors tried to align
their own ideas of what the cloud might be with other ideas, and... (more)
Cloud computing is at the forefront for many organizations across the world.
Experts believe it is the future of IT. Considering all the benefits offered
by the cloud, making the transition may appear inevitable to enterprises. But
just like any major technology, it also comes with certain caveats - security
and privacy of business data and legal compliance among others. While these
concerns are now well known, the most obvious disaster that can befall a
business depending on cloud computing is still largely overlooked - what
happens when the cloud provider shuts shop?
Consumers... (more)
