Technology is advancing all around us. From our TVs that we use in our homes to the smart phones we ever so mindlessly use on a day-to-day basis, and they're becoming more and more connected to each other too. Technological advancement and connectivity are driving forces in businesses large and small; minimizing costs and effort, and maximizing productivity. Here are just a few of the newest ways in which technology is advancing business.
Information Storage
Moore's Law states that processing speeds will double every two years, and that the number of transistors on an affordable CPU would also double every two years, but what if we moved away from transistors and advanced into memristors? Originally envisioned by Leon Chua in 1971, the idea is that memristors would be able to store information, even with power loss. HP has announced that they plan to use this technology on a new invention, This innovative piece of technology not only uses these memristors, but also a collection of specialized cores, instead of the traditional smaller number of general cores, and is connected with silicon photonics instead of the traditional copper wires. These improvements boost the speed of the system, and reduce energy requirements, to 80 times less than what we use currently. A smart device with the machine integrated into it could potentially hold 100 terabytes of memory.
It was also designed to be able to work along with the IoT (Internet of Things). IoT is a concept that in the future, most everyday objects will be connected to the internet and be able to identify themselves and communicate with other objects. Think of a business world where information is automatically communicated from an object. For instance, this would allow a forklift to be able to tell your computer how many crates where moved from warehouse A, to warehouse B without having someone count and enter the data themselves. This innovation alone has the potential to help businesses maximize productivity and use data more efficiently.
Management systems
Businesses are becoming more efficient every day by using computerized maintenance management software (CMMS), Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) Software, and Facilities Management Software (FMS). These systems maximize profits by reducing operating and maintenance costs, and boosting performance. They can keep tabs on maintenance and other activities within an organization through a work order system that is aided by a local network or a cloud-based system (usually called a SaaS or Software as a Service), manage assets and asset life cycles, and even focus on optimizing facilities for space and energy.
You would be able to manage over all equipment effectiveness (OEE) by using the data to determine the availability of equipment, the utilization of, and the quality at which the equipment is actually operating. Let's give an example, it is very common for equipment to be down for a few weeks each year, say that one hour of downtime will cost your company $500, let's also assume that there is around 100 hours of downtime for the equipment annually for the company. That means a total loss of $50,000 annually. You can utilize the data from CMMS, EAM, and FMS to lower this loss by appropriately using the software to schedule and control maintenance on the equipment.
Drupal
We've talked about optimizing efficiency in processing information and data, but what about optimizing that content within your company's website?
Let me introduce you to Drupal. Drupal is a Content Management System (CMS) that takes care of all of the content on your website, and allows you to choose different ways to display it. This helps users navigate through a website and find content faster and easier. One of its best features is that it's open source software, which means no costs for licensing and it's free. Thousands of developers worldwide use the Drupal platform, many of them contributing to the community by developing various modules. A Module is a snippet of code that works within the Drupal framework - here's a few examples; these add function to websites and can be configured many different ways. There are extensive libraries of code snippets and themes you can incorporate into a business's website to make it look professional, give it a social media aspect, a blog atmosphere, or for e-commerce purposes. There is a module for every aspect of a website that you can think of, and if there isn't, you can code them yourself using PHP, or find a Drupal developer and hire them to code it for you. A Drupal developer can modify or create a website for a business within hours, making it easy to see why this CMS can be of great service to an organization.
Globalization
When the time comes to grow your business, companies are now able to utilize technologies to maximize their growth potential worldwide. With new technologies, businesses are now able to complete tasks that would have been nearly impossible ten years ago.. From acquiring dedicated international phone numbers to conduct meetings all over the world to compiling a database of information allowing companies throughout the world to standardize specific regulations amongst themselves - for example: the new chemical labeling standardization agreement that took effect June 1, 2015 that gave worldwide chemical handling companies a new hold on chemical safety. Globalizing a company in 2015 will lead to opportunities that may have not been available ten years ago. Thankfully - with technology's assistance - businesses have brand new opportunities to rise to the top of the world.

Over the past few years, there has been an explosion in the volume of data. To tackle this big data explosion, there has been a rise in the number of successful Hadoop projects in enterprises. Due to the large volumes of data, the emergence of Hadoop technology, and the need to store all soloed data in one place, has prompted a phenomenon among enterprises called: Data Lake.
The potential of big data is only limited by the creative thinking of your business stakeholders, and that may be the most important concept in the “thinking like a data scientist” process. The “thinking like a data scientist” process guides the business stakeholders into envisioning how big data can optimize their key business processes, create a more compelling customer engagement and uncover new monetization opportunities. But neither the business stakeholders, nor the data scientists, can likely do that envisioning entirely by themselves.
The concept behind the Internet of Things has been around for a while now, ATMs being some of the first enterprise, hardened, network-connected, managed devices for mainstream consumer use. So too with our mobile phones, these are not new concepts to network technicians or hardware geeks. But for the rest of us, we simply never imagined the extents that the "ubiquity of connectedness" would take all other industries, from biotech to automotive, personal care to agriculture, entertainment to custom manufacturing. The list is as long as our imaginations.
Dasher Technologies is helping to usher in the democratization of big data value to more players in less time with analytics in a cloud services model
This week, the team assembled in NYC for @Cloud Expo 2015 and @ThingsExpo 2015. For the past four years, this has been a must-attend event for MetraTech. We were happy to once again join industry visionaries, colleagues, customers and even competitors to share and explore the ways in which the Internet of Things (IoT) will impact our industry. Over the course of the show, we discussed the types of challenges we will collectively need to solve to capitalize on the opportunity IoT presents.
Had Mark Twain lived today, we might hear him utter the oath lies, damn lies, and analytics. Statistics to be sure may still be used to distort the truth – but now with the sudden explosion of big data, analytics threaten the same fate.
I’m not talking about intentional distortion here – that’s another story entirely. Rather, the risk of unintentional distortion via data analytics is becoming increasingly prevalent, as the sheer quantity of data increases, as well as the availability and usability of the analytics tools on the market.
The data scientists themselves aren’t the problem. In fac...
Yesterday, Dell announced the largest technology M&A; in history with a proposed$67B buyout of EMC and VMware (via EMC’s 80% ownership of VMW). The combined company will have over $80B in revenue, employ tens of thousands of people around the world and sell everything from PCs, servers & storage to security software and virtualization software. Not to be overlooked is the fact that Dell and EMC will be private companies and free from the scrutiny of activist investors.
The goal for many organizations now is to make analytics a natural part of most—if not every—employee’s daily workflow. Achieving that objective typically requires a shift in the corporate culture, and ready access to user-friendly data analytics tools.
Apache Spark continues to gain a lot of traction as companies launch or expand their big data initiatives. There is no doubt that it’s finding a place in corporate IT strategies.
The open-source cluster computing framework was developed in the AMPLab at the University of California at Berkeley in 2009 and became an incubated project of the Apache Software Foundation in 2013. By early 2014, Spark had become one of the foundation’s top-level projects, and today it is one of the most active projects managed by Apache.
We live in a microwave culture. I use this phrase often when discussing business needs with clients, especially in the context of leveraging technology to address those needs. Sometimes I will get a puzzled look, other times I will get some head nods in agreement and understanding. When I use this phrase, I’m talking about how the microwave has affected our culture from an end-user expectation perspective. There is an expectation of getting what I want when I want it, and an immediacy built into that expectation. The microwave turned hours into minutes, and minutes into seconds. There tends to...
The United States spends around 17-18% of its GDP on healthcare every year. Translated into dollars, it is a mind-boggling $2.9 trillion. Unfortunately, that spending will grow at a faster rate now due to baby boomers becoming an aging population, and they are the largest demographic in the U.S. Unless the U.S. gets this spiraling healthcare spending under control, in a few short years we will be spending almost 25% of our entire GDP in healthcare trying to fix people’s failing health, instead of spending it somewhere else where it is desperately needed. Obviously, we can’t stop the aging popu...
Today’s modern day industrial revolution is being shaped by ubiquitous connectivity, machine to machine (M2M) communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), open APIs leading to a surge in new applications and services, partnerships and eventual marketplaces. IoT has the potential to transform industry and society much like advances in steam technology, transportation, mass production and communications ushered in the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries.
People, process, and technology has become a mantra within the world of DevOps proponents and practitioners, and it can easily be applied to the whole of cloud computing and all that it entails. Our DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann led a panel discussion on the topic.
Meanwhile, I led a technical discussion on aspects of the IoT with a panelist who went so far as to say the nascent M2M (machine-to-machine) IoT sector-which promises to reform the entire global $11 trillion manufacturing sector-will not be successful without the idea of M2M2H, the H standing for "humans."
