I’ve been thinking a bit about microservices (μServices) recently. My immediate reaction is to think: “Isn’t this just yet another new term for the same stuff, Web Services->SOA->APIs->Microservices?” Followed shortly by the thought, “well yes it is, but there are some important differences/distinguishing factors.”
Microservices is an evolutionary paradigm born out of the need for simplicity (i.e., get away from the ESB) and alignment with agile (think DevOps) and scalable (think Containerizati...| By Liz McMillan | Article Rating: |

Proactive vs. Reactive - A Better Approach to Cloud Security — November 3, 11:00 - 11:35 am
By Stephen Coty
Organizations from small to large are increasingly adopting cloud solutions to deliver essential business services at a much lower cost. According to cyber security experts, the frequency and severity of cyber-attacks are on the rise, causing alarm to businesses and customers across a variety of industries. To defend against exploits like these, a company must adopt a comprehensive security defense strategy that is designed for their business. In 2015, organizations such as United Airlines, Sony Corp, Anthem and the Office of Personnel Management experienced data breaches through malware and other targeted attacks. How will your business adapt to this shift in technology while keeping its security posture?
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Stephen Coty, Chief Security Evangelist at Alert Logic, will take you into the evolving world of cybercrime and give you an insider's look into the tactics utilized by fast, well-funded and organized attackers. He will review real examples and case studies of recent breaches, and you will learn expert strategies for protecting your information in the cloud.
Discussion includes:
- An expert profile of today's evolved hackers and threat landscape.
- What attackers are really after, why, and how they're getting what they want.
- Strategies you can implement in the cloud to protect against attacks.

'Security Built for the Cloud' Demo — November 4, 3:40 - 4:15 pm
By Steve Coty and Paul Fletcher
In their Live Hack" presentation at 17th Cloud Expo, Stephen Coty and Paul Fletcher, Chief Security Evangelists at Alert Logic, will provide the audience with a chance to see a live demonstration of the common tools cyber attackers use to attack cloud and traditional IT systems.
This "Live Hack" uses open source attack tools that are free and available for download by anybody. Attendees will learn where to
find and how to operate these tools for the purpose of testing their own IT infrastructure. They will also witness a cyber-attack from both sides - attacker and defender. Get an inside view how indicators of compromise are researched to develop security content to be deployed for detection based on these attacks.

DevOps Summit Power Panel | Balancing the Three Pillars of DevOps
In this @DevOpsSummit Power Panel - moderated by Andi Mann (founder of @Sageable) - Shannon Williams, co-founder of Rancher Labs; Haseeb Budhani, co-founder and CEO of Soha; and Dalibor Siroky, Director and co-founder at Plutora; discussed how to balance these three pillars of DevOps, where to focus attention (and resources), where organizations might slip up with the wrong focus, how to manage change and risk in all three areas, what is possible and what is not, where to start, and especially how new structures, processes, and technologies can help drive a new DevOps culture.
Microservices & IoT Power Panel at @DevOpsSummit
Buzzword Alert: Microservices and IoT at a DevOps conference? What could possibly go wrong?
In this Power Panel at @DevOpsSummit, moderated by Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx, panelists Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President at Akana; Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks; and Troy Topnik, ActiveState's Technical Product Manager; and Otis Gospodnetić, founder of Sematext; peeled away the buzz and discuss the important architectural principles behind implementing IoT solutions for the enterprise. As remote IoT devices and sensors become increasingly intelligent, they become part of our distributed cloud environment, and we must architect and code accordingly. At the very least, you'll have no problem filling in your buzzword bingo cards.

Containers & Microservices Expo To Be Colocated with @DevOpsSummit Silicon Valley, November 3-5, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA
SYS-CON Events announced on June 9, 2015 at the Javits Center that the 2nd "Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, and the "Third Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place June 7-9, 2016, at Javits Center in New York City.
Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.

The New Data Center has arrived. Over the past decade we have seen the migration from physical servers to virtual machines and now to public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud. Each of these migrations has taken a similar path. Test, dev and non-critical workloads are the first to make the move. As the technology matures, business critical tier 1 applications eventually make the move as well. At this point the percentage of applications still running directly on physical servers is rapidly declining. As Cloud IaaS technology such as AWS and Azure matures, many companies are moving their tie...
In order to deliver on the promise of DevOps and hit continuous release targets for even the largest, most complex and integrated applications, companies need solutions that provide the same flexibility for data as for code bases, the same automation and repeatability for data as for configurations. They need Data as a Service. DaaS solutions offer a single, integrated platform that serves up faithful copies of source data as easily as codes or configurations, and have sophisticated features to enable collaboration, project agility, and strong governance.
Information overload has infiltrated our lives. From the amount of news available and at our fingertips 24/7, to the endless choices we have when making a simple purchase, to the quantity of emails we receive on a given day, it’s increasingly difficult to sift out the details that really matter.
When you envision your cloud monitoring system, the same thinking applies. We receive a lot of useless data that gets fed into the system, and the reality is no one in IT or DevOps has the time to manually determine the actionable data points (that’s a whole job itself), meaning monitoring what reall...
Now – that Node.js 4.0.0 was officially released – you may wonder what it delivers to you and if you should upgrade right away, or not. This post covers the most important changes you need to know, and some key implications you may have to take into account in making your decision.

Even though you are running an agile development process, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your performance testing is being conducted in a truly agile way. Saving performance testing for a “final sprint” before release still treats it like a waterfall development step, with all the cost and risk that comes with that. In this post, we will show you how to make load testing happen early and often by putting SLAs on the agile task board.
At the outset, Hyper convergence looks to be an attractive option seemingly providing lot of flexibility. In reality, it comes with so many limitation and curtail the flexibility to grow the hardware resources such as server, storage, etc independent of each other. In addition, performance nightmare bound to hit once the system gets loaded.
In late 1990s, storage and networking came out of compute for a reason. Both networking and storage need some specialized processing and it doesn't make sense for all the general purpose servers doing this job. It is better handled by the specialized grou...
