I worked extensively in the telecommunications area to lead large, innovative
nationwide mobile application and portal rollouts that included mobile
platforms, applications, databases, services and integration mechanisms. With
the explosion of the Cloud and Mobile Cloud, the entire digital landscape is
changing. With 4G, bandwidth and latency issues are on the path of being
progressively addressed. Not just traditional computers, but mobile devices
are accessing Cloud and Big Data services like never before. Smartphones and
tablets are the high growth areas in mobile computing. Some tablets have been
quite popular as devices and are transforming the rendering and processing of
information. Mobile applications need to run efficiently on various devices
such as Androids, iPhones. Mobile applications have forced the push of
processing and storage from the devices to t... (more)
There is great excitement about the cloud; however, it is important to
conduct a full assessment as part of the Cloud Transition.
It is very important to decide which applications will be moving to the cloud
based on factors such as alignment with business requirements, cost savings,
level of effort, available resources, benefits of the new solution, risks etc
to determine business and functional benefits. Architecture and security
aspects need to be thoroughly assessed, and factors such as interoperability,
reliability, portability, storage, data transfer, sensitivity of data have... (more)
The million dollar question has been "Can an organization move all its
applications to a public cloud?". Instead of moving all applications to the
public cloud, many organizations are choosing a hybrid approach where
on-premise resources can be leveraged and can interact with external
resources. A hybrid cloud is a combination of public, private and community
clouds. Most private clouds are internal, however there can be situations
where private clouds are hosted at a vendor site.
For this discussion, I am focusing on the private clouds that are hosted
internal to the organizati... (more)
The London Olympics are not using the Cloud. Cloud computing seems a good
match for the Olympics for provisioning a scalable and on-demand architecture
quickly, and then taking it down after the event. That is precisely what the
technology supports. The integration and deployment of the infrastructure for
the Olympics is a big program with hundreds of servers due to the various
events and related technology needed to support them. This can cause
technologists to take a more conservative path to manage risks and stick to
utilizing existing technologies.
An event like the Olympic... (more)

I worked extensively in the telecommunications area to lead large nationwide

smart phone and tablets, mobile devices are accessing new and innovative
applications everyday and the amount of data and processing requirements have
