"Cloud Expo was really the event to connect with thought leaders, innovators, business folks who are interested in what the cloud can bring to their business. You know really how it allows them to bring the transformation of the business process."
Sandy Carter, IBM's General Manager for the Cloud Ecosystem and Developers
Cloud Expo is the single show where delegates and technology vendors can meet to experience and discuss the entire world of the cloud.
At 16th Cloud Expo in New York City, Sandy Carter keynoted on women in tech and why women need to take risks and embrace failure to give them the courage to crash through the glass ceiling. She now shares some of her own thoughts and experiences from Cloud Expo.
"Hi my name is Sandy Carter and I'm IBM's General Manager for the Cloud Ecosystem and Developers. In June I went for the first time to the Cloud Expo New York. In fact Roger Strukhoff asked me to come and Keynote. I was really delighted with the vision that he had to really highlight and really headline that first day keynote, focused on girls in tech, and their real need to develop this pipeline in early life, and to spur fathers and others and companies to encourage women to not limit their interests, to pursue their interests and computing and tech topics.
"This topic was called ‘Geek Girls Are Chic.' It was a hit with the audience, but the other thing I found amazing was that the audience was packed out not just to hear this session, which was an amazing session on women and tech, but also to hear about the latest in the cloud.
"I found that the Cloud Expo was really the event to connect with thought leaders, innovators, business folks who are interested in what the cloud can bring to their business. You know really how it allows them to bring the transformation of the business process. As I talked to many in the audience I noticed that these were business leaders, not just technologists, but a combination of both that is really required to be successful in the business. I was just really pleased with the way the Cloud Expo attracted the folks who are most interested and influential in the space. So if you're sitting there and you're trying to figure out how do I transfer my business, or you're a technologist trying to sort through DevOps and Docker and everything else that's going around, I would make sure that you attend Cloud Expo. Now the next one I'm going to attend will be in Santa Clara, CA.It's going to be on November 3-5. I expect the same great things that the team, like Roger, has done in New York City to be there with a California twist in a California style in Santa Clara. I hope that you'll join me there as well."

- Some beginnings of what to do about it!
In her Opening Keynote at 16th Cloud Expo, Sandy Carter, IBM General Manager Cloud Ecosystem and Developers, and a Social Business Evangelist, discussed why this matters, how innovation will benefit, and how to foster an interest in tech.
Learn why women need to take risks and embrace failure to give them the courage to crash through the glass ceiling. Sandy will share some of her own experiences and advice with 5 career hacks to help women get ahead, because talent is not enough.

Containers & Microservices Expo To Be Colocated with Cloud Expo Silicon Valley, November 3-5, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA
SYS-CON Events announced on June 9, 2015 at the Javits Center that the 2nd "Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, and the "Third Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place June 7-9, 2016, at Javits Center in New York City.
Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.

This article will cover the following questions: How do you balance the need for speed with the need to test everything to deliver high-quality software to the end user?
The New Data Center has arrived. Over the past decade we have seen the migration from physical servers to virtual machines and now to public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud. Each of these migrations has taken a similar path. Test, dev and non-critical workloads are the first to make the move. As the technology matures, business critical tier 1 applications eventually make the move as well. At this point the percentage of applications still running directly on physical servers is rapidly declining. As Cloud IaaS technology such as AWS and Azure matures, many companies are moving their tie...
Information overload has infiltrated our lives. From the amount of news available and at our fingertips 24/7, to the endless choices we have when making a simple purchase, to the quantity of emails we receive on a given day, it’s increasingly difficult to sift out the details that really matter.
When you envision your cloud monitoring system, the same thinking applies. We receive a lot of useless data that gets fed into the system, and the reality is no one in IT or DevOps has the time to manually determine the actionable data points (that’s a whole job itself), meaning monitoring what reall...
Through this series I've considered the changes disruptive technology is having on traditional models, the routes businesses are taking to embrace transformation and the skills challenge they are facing as a result. It's clearly a complex and all-encompassing challenge for business leaders, but here I try to boil it down to the five key things we talk to senior leaders in business about when considering their change; from legacy, to next-generation, software-defined businesses:
Now – that Node.js 4.0.0 was officially released – you may wonder what it delivers to you and if you should upgrade right away, or not. This post covers the most important changes you need to know, and some key implications you may have to take into account in making your decision.
The last few months were really exciting for the Node.js community.
At the start of this year Joyent Inc. handed over the project to the community around io.js, a fork of Node.js. Soon after that, it was decided that there should be only one version that incorporates all current features of io.js and Node.js in th...
A looking glass is a magical lens or portal through which things can be seen that are otherwise invisible. This is a perfect metaphor for the increasing challenge faced by businesses to find value hidden in the data they generate as well as data that they have access to. Value nuggets in data are often obscured by large volumes of data (“noise”, if you will). The larger the data sets, the more obscured the value nuggets are. A theoretical looking glass capable of discerning the signal from the noise will find value nuggets that enable precise and timely reaction to situations, as well as proac...
I love all this digital hullaballoo, really I do. I love all these different trends and disruptions and turmoil. I especially love the confusion – it gives me something to write about.
But sometimes, I’ve just had enough. Especially when the digital disruption story starts repeating itself.
You don't have to look far to see evidence of open source software's impact on IT as a whole. It starts with large open source projects like OpenStack, Cloud Foundry, and Hadoop and continues to smaller but widely deployed components like OpenSSL and MySQL.
I know what you're thinking.
But no one is making real money from open source. Red Hat is the big player and they're still tiny.
This is something I hear often when talking about the inevitability of open source. Yes, open source software companies make less money than closed source software companies. But that's exactly why it's attra...
A recent Wall Street Journal article discussed the challenges that online content publishers have in monetizing their content as more and more user traffic shifts to mobile devices from traditional desktop/laptop computers/browsers.
Data from Mary Meeker’s 2015 Internet trends report in particular shows that the time adult users in the US spend online per day on mobile is up 51%. And the article cites similar data showing that the time spent on mobile properties of certain publishers jumped 40% in the last 12 months to 52% of the time spent viewing their content.
Buy a cloud, any cloud you like and stick it on whatever application and data storage, management and/or analysis workload you like – that’s all it takes, right?
Actually, that’s kind of not how it works.
This thing called ‘optimization’ is one of those often used industry buzzwords that unfortunately gets way overused to the point where its initial method and meaning becomes dangerously diluted.
According to a survey published by Gallup, just over 13 percent of employees globally are actually "involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace." The rest of the global workforce is not just indifferent - a good chunk of them are also "actively disengaged" or "potentially hostile". This is quite concerning given that nearly 71 percentage of employees regard engagement as critical to achieving organizational success.
Could cloud gamification be the answer? According to one study, nearly 78% of workers today use games based motivation techniques to motivate themsel...
The concept of cloud backup has been around awhile and seems well-understood: For a monthly fee, a third-party vendor will back up your business data and store it “in the cloud” (network of servers) so it can be retrieved on demand at a later date.
What is less well-understood is the idea of cloud disaster recovery. Its name gives some indication of its purpose, suggesting a more robust response to an unforeseen data-loss emergency. But is a more robust response always the appropriate response? In other words, how does one calibrate a solution to best fit one’s specific needs?
In a recent blog article, I discussed the difference between cloud backup and cloud disaster recovery (or “DR”). In a nutshell, with cloud backup, you basically pay a third-party service provider a monthly fee to have them back up your firm’s data and store it in the cloud, so it can be restored on-demand at a later date. With cloud DR, you gain the option to restore your data/server images to an always-on offsite virtual cloud environment capable of running live production servers. Your recovery time dramatically shrinks with this option.
Monetizing the cloud is fast becoming a hot area of interest for everyone. Rightfully so, perhaps because we have come along in our evolution as cloud technologists and are now able to see more than just being able to make things work on the cloud. It’s time now to derive maximum value from the cloud and the need for any vendor is to generate revenue. What are the rules of monetization and how do we even get started? Let’s look at three things that essentially make up a monetization framework.
