The Business Case for IoT
By Dave McCarthy
Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the "newest shiny object syndrome" is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity. Fortunately, meaningful and tangible business cases for IoT are plentiful in a broad array of industries and vertical markets. These range from simple warranty cost reduction for capital intensive assets, to minimizing downtime for vital business tools to creating feedback loops improving product design to improving and enhancing enterprise customer experiences. All of these business cases, which will be briefly explored in this session, hinge on cost effectively extracting relevant data from disparate devices and applying data analytics and, ultimately, business logic to that data. Properly implemented (and I do mean properly), IoT can effectively deliver these business outcomes.
Speaker Bio: Dave McCarthy is a 20 year veteran of the software industry, currently serving as Director of Products at Bsquare Corporation, where he leads both product management and product marketing. Throughout his career, Dave has demonstrated a passion for solving complex business challenges through the use of technology. Dave recognizes that the emergence of IoT highlights the increasing need for businesses to extract value from data, regardless of the source. Dave brings a unique perspective to inform how companies can better integrate device and sensor data with enterprise systems to improve business outcomes. Dave earned a MBA with honors from Northeastern University.

Containers & Microservices Expo to Be Colocated with @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley, November 3-5, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA
SYS-CON Events announced on June 9, 2015 at the Javits Center that the 2nd "Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, and the "Third Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place June 7-9, 2016, at Javits Center in New York City.
Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.

By Pat Romanski The Internet of Things is in the early stages of mainstream deployment but it promises to unlock value and rapidly transform how organizations manage, operationalize, and monetize their assets. IoT is a complex structure of hardware, sensors, applications, analytics and devices that need to be able to communicate geographically and across all functions. Once the data is collected from numerous endpoints, the challenge then becomes converting it into actionable insight.Sep. 16, 2015 09:45 AM EDT Reads: 370 |

Just as companies now communicate with their consumers and prospects in much different ways -- with higher emphasis on social interactions -- so too the IT industry has abruptly changed.
In my research on mobile commerce and mobile consumers' behaviors this year, the need to personalize a user's mobile/digital experiences always comes up as a top priority. Everyone wants an experience that is relevant. However, as I pondered these studies, it occurred to me that personalization is only a part of the solution. If you received an SMS message on your smartphone about a shoe sales (your favorite brand and style), that ended yesterday, at a location hundreds of miles away, the personalization would be without value. Yes, it is your preferred brand and style, but not in your locat...
Now – that Node.js 4.0.0 was officially released – you may wonder what it delivers to you and if you should upgrade right away, or not. This post covers the most important changes you need to know, and some key implications you may have to take into account in making your decision.
The last few months were really exciting for the Node.js community.
At the start of this year Joyent Inc. handed over the project to the community around io.js, a fork of Node.js. Soon after that, it was decided that there should be only one version that incorporates all current features of io.js and Node.js in th...
A looking glass is a magical lens or portal through which things can be seen that are otherwise invisible. This is a perfect metaphor for the increasing challenge faced by businesses to find value hidden in the data they generate as well as data that they have access to. Value nuggets in data are often obscured by large volumes of data (“noise”, if you will). The larger the data sets, the more obscured the value nuggets are. A theoretical looking glass capable of discerning the signal from the noise will find value nuggets that enable precise and timely reaction to situations, as well as proac...
Today, there is countless data collected and analyzed by companies. Just a few years ago, that data was useless, now data is collected and used to provide answers and solve problems.
As big data use cases continue to evolve, there will be an increasing number of business missions that will be served by new approaches to data. With the adoption of an enterprise data hub, developers are finding new agility to create services and applications, as well as decision-making that leads to market dominating strategies. According to Cognitio's co-founder and partner Bob Gourley, this adoption will lea...
Many of the early examples tend to highlight smart cities or home automation. For most enterprises, however, the ability to connect and integrate everything together can solve current problems and open up new opportunities.
Most enterprises have complex combinations of legacy systems, SaaS services, thousands of devices, multiple locations and unending new requirements from business leaders looking to expand revenues or cut costs. Having the ability to integrate and connect all these systems, services, people and things into automated workflows can make a lot of sense.
According to a survey published by Gallup, just over 13 percent of employees globally are actually "involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace." The rest of the global workforce is not just indifferent - a good chunk of them are also "actively disengaged" or "potentially hostile". This is quite concerning given that nearly 71 percentage of employees regard engagement as critical to achieving organizational success.
Could cloud gamification be the answer? According to one study, nearly 78% of workers today use games based motivation techniques to motivate themsel...
Monetizing the cloud is fast becoming a hot area of interest for everyone. Rightfully so, perhaps because we have come along in our evolution as cloud technologists and are now able to see more than just being able to make things work on the cloud. It’s time now to derive maximum value from the cloud and the need for any vendor is to generate revenue. What are the rules of monetization and how do we even get started? Let’s look at three things that essentially make up a monetization framework.
There are many parallels to Google’s move to set up Alphabet as a holding company to remain at the forefront of innovation and what is required by all companies to foster innovation in the age of the Cloud and IoT. No one will argue that Alphabet was a change Google needed to make to remain relevant, fresh and innovative across a number of product initiatives. Under the Alphabet structure, Google provides operating divisions with the freedom and accountability for making decisions all while being nimble and quick on their feet. And perhaps most importantly, keeping their most creative people e...
