One of the first considerations that IT managers struggle with is how to
handle security and compliance. Both security and compliance are aspects of a
larger, more strategic concern: governance. Governance essentially represents
a set of processes for creating, communicating, and enforcing policies across
an organization — including security and compliance policies.
In many IT shops, however, governance has a negative connotation, as it
brings to mind paperwork-laden processes involving endless meetings and
busywork, slowing down the more important work of the organization. And yet,
without governance, how would companies ensure they have adequate security
and sufficient compliance controls?
Cloud computing, in fact, raises the stakes on governance. The Cloud’s
automated self-service represents powerful tools in the hands of people
across the organization. Without a... (more)

Getting Data Security Right: Healthcare, Retail, Financial Services and
Government
By Alan Kessler
It seems like every time I write a blog, a new breach has occurred (for an
up-to-date look at local, state and federal breaches I suggest you
periodically review the Identity Theft Resource Center’s running list).
Since I last penned a post, we’ve seen breaches of the Mayo Clinic,
Citizen’s Bank, CVS and Arkansas BlueCross/BlueShield. To the average
person, most breaches probably bleed together. If you’ve seen one breach,
you’ve seen them all, right? If we’re going off of that logi... (more)
What Do Ski Helmets, Seat Belts, and Encryption Have in Common?
By Charles Goldberg
Ski helmets, seat belts, and encryption. What comes to your mind when you
read these words?
You may immediately think “safety,” and you’d be right, but how about
“speed enablers”? At first blush, that may not be the first concept that
comes to mind, but there’s a pretty compelling case to be made for this as
another common theme.
Let me give you a couple fun examples, starting with ski helmets. During the
winter of 2002/2003 researchers studied different factors, and how they
affect skier and sno... (more)
Closing the Gap: Bridging the Divide Between IT Security & IT Operations Is
Critical in a Cloud Environment
After the deluge of data breaches in 2014 and more emerging every day,
security is without a doubt a top strategic initiative for just about every
enterprise in 2015. Along with top-notch security, it is imperative for
organizations - particularly cloud-driven ones - to also have leading
operations tools in place to manage the availability and reliability of their
infrastructure. Consider these statistics: more than 80 percent of attacks
target known vulnerabilities and 79... (more)
Securing the Software Defined Data Center
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
The Software Defined Data Center (SDDC), which enables organizations to
seamlessly run in a hybrid cloud model (public + private cloud), is here to
stay. IDC estimates that the software-defined networking market will be
valued at $3.7 billion by 2016.
Security is a key component and benefit of the SDDC, and offers an
opportunity to build security 'from the ground up' and weave it into the
environment from day one.
In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Reuven Harrison, CTO and Co-Founder of
Tufin, will discuss t... (more)
