Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team
at Google.
Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web
and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices.
Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic
solution: use my server and you'll be fine.
But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just
can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as
a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the
web enjoys.
With millions of smart devices coming in the near future, are we really going
to have millions of apps? People are already "app-fatigued." There will
always be room for hero-apps like snapchat but do I really want an app for my
smart suitcase? Tha... (more)
August 10, 2015, saw the dawn of a new era at Google. It announced a huge
restructuring of the company. An umbrella holding-company called Alphabet was
created to manage a portfolio of separate companies each with its own CEO.
Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin elevated themselves to be the CEO and
President of Alphabet with Eric Schmidt as chairman. The board will remain
the same as before. For the biggest company Google, the new CEO is Sundar
Pichai, 43 years old, who has seen a fast rise in the ranks over his 11 year
career. The other portfolio companies will be Nest, Fiber, ... (more)

PubNub released an open source template to allow developers to add Skype-like
video chat into their apps. The free template provides a fully functional
video chat platform using WebRTC, PubNub and Google Authentication for a
global, reliable collaboration solution.
"While the WebRTC protocol has created huge excitement as a way to deliver
video chat ubiquitously, there's still a gap between the protocol itself and
the ability to deploy a working, globally scaled, collaboration application
using this technology," said Stephen Blum, CTO and co-founder of PubNub. ... (more)
"We all agree that now is the right time to make the transition to a new CEO
who can take the company to the next level," said Yahoo's Board of Directors
in a statement today in which the BoD revealed that it has initiated a search
for a new Chief Executive Officer for the company Yang founded. "From
founding this company to guiding its growth into a trusted global brand that
is indispensible to millions of people, I have always sought to do what is
best for our franchise," said Yang himself.

I would like to begin this special series in the run-up to AJAXWorld RIA
Conference & Expo in October with one of the most useful and commonplace
patterns in my code. Arguably, this can be considered a feature of the
JavaScript language rather than a design pattern; however, when considering
the contexts in which it is applied, I regard it as a pattern.
Self-invocation (also known as auto-invocation) is when a function executes
immediately upon it’s definition. This is a core pattern and serves as the
foundation for many other patterns of JavaScript developme... (more)
Google Wave on Ulitzer
Invites left: 26 8
Looks like Google sent out another bunch of invitations for Wave & since most
of my friends are already on Wave, I thought why not give it away. So, in
case you want one, just drop a comment (don’t forget to protect it against
spamming by substituting @ with [at] & the likes) or mail with your name &
email address. I’ll update the counter on top as I progress with the
giveaway.
I’ve used Wave to collaborate on a couple of projects in the last couple of
weeks. Some features are not yet functional, but it does look pretty
promising. And ... (more)

@ThingsExpo Stories By Elizabeth White Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as soon as they are needed to take action. Sep. 5, 2015 09:15 AM EDT Reads: 194 | By Pat Romanski The Internet of Things is in the early stages of mainstream deployment but it promises to unlock value and rapidly transform how organizations manage, operationalize, and monetize their assets. IoT is a complex structure of hardware, sensors, applications, analytics and devices that need to be able to communicate geographically and across all functions. Once the data is collected from numerous endpoints, the challenge then becomes converting it into actionable insight. Sep. 5, 2015 09:00 AM EDT Reads: 164 | By Elizabeth White Manufacturing connected IoT versions of traditional products requires more than multiple deep technology skills. It also requires a shift in mindset, to realize that connected, sensor-enabled “things” act more like services than what we usually think of as products.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Ayla Networks, will discuss how when sensors start generating detailed real-world data about products and how they’re being used, smart manufacturers can use the data to create additional revenue streams, such as improved warranties or premium features. Or slash... Sep. 5, 2015 09:00 AM EDT Reads: 131 | By Elizabeth White While many app developers are comfortable building apps for the smartphone, there is a whole new world out there.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Narayan Sainaney, Co-founder and CTO of Mojio, will discuss how the business case for connected car apps is growing and, with open platform companies having already done the heavy lifting, there really is no barrier to entry. Sep. 5, 2015 08:45 AM EDT Reads: 245 | By Liz McMillan As more intelligent IoT applications shift into gear, they’re merging into the ever-increasing traffic flow of the Internet. It won’t be long before we experience bottlenecks, as IoT traffic peaks during rush hours. Organizations that are unprepared will find themselves by the side of the road unable to cross back into the fast lane. As billions of new devices begin to communicate and exchange data – will your infrastructure be scalable enough to handle this new interconnected world? Sep. 5, 2015 08:30 AM EDT Reads: 301 | By Elizabeth White Through WebRTC, audio and video communications are being embedded more easily than ever into applications, helping carriers, enterprises and independent software vendors deliver greater functionality to their end users. With today’s business world increasingly focused on outcomes, users’ growing calls for ease of use, and businesses craving smarter, tighter integration, what’s the next step in delivering a richer, more immersive experience?
That richer, more fully integrated experience comes about through a Communications Platform as a Service which allows for messaging, screen sharing, video... Sep. 5, 2015 08:00 AM EDT Reads: 775 | By Liz McMillan Consumer IoT applications provide data about the user that just doesn’t exist in traditional PC or mobile web applications. This rich data, or “context,” enables the highly personalized consumer experiences that characterize many consumer IoT apps. This same data is also providing brands with unprecedented insight into how their connected products are being used, while, at the same time, powering highly targeted engagement and marketing opportunities.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Nathan Treloar, President and COO of Bebaio, will explore examples of brands transforming their businesses by t... Sep. 5, 2015 07:15 AM EDT Reads: 1,656 | By Liz McMillan WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was.
You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong. Sep. 5, 2015 01:00 AM EDT Reads: 427 | By Elizabeth White Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.
