The Internet of Things is in the early stages of mainstream deployment but it promises to unlock value and rapidly transform how organizations manage, operationalize, and monetize their assets. IoT is a complex structure of hardware, sensors, applications, analytics and devices that need to be able to communicate geographically and across all functions. Once the data is collected from numerous endpoints, the challenge then becomes converting it into actionable insight.| By Carmen Gonzalez | Article Rating: |

CEO Power Panel in Silicon Valley Examined Agility, Cloud, Big Data, and the 'Internet of Things'
Things are being built upon cloud foundations to transform organizations. This CEO Power Panel at 15th Cloud Expo, moderated by Roger Strukhoff, Cloud Expo and @ThingsExpo conference chair, addressed the big issues involving these technologies and, more important, the results they will achieve. Rodney Rogers, chairman and CEO of Virtustream; Brendan O'Brien, co-founder of Aria Systems, Bart Copeland, president and CEO of ActiveState Software; Jim Cowie, chief scientist at Dyn; Dave Wagstaff, VP and chief architect at BSQUARE Corporation; Seth Proctor, CTO of NuoDB, Inc.; and Andris Gailitis, CIO of DEAC, discussed how important public, private, and hybrid cloud are to the enterprise. How does one define Big Data? And how is the IoT tying all this together?

Yesterday I attended a session in Palo Alto on the subject of Data Refinery and the speaker was Will Gorman of Pentaho. I did not realize that Pentaho was acquired by Hitachi Data Systems couple of months ago. The terms “data lake” was coined by James Dixon of Pentaho. I wrote a blog on this subject last year. As soon as the term started to appear in the data lexicon, other interesting terms such as “data swamp” appeared.
There are many parallels to Google’s move to set up Alphabet as a holding company to remain at the forefront of innovation and what is required by all companies to foster innovation in the age of the Cloud and IoT. No one will argue that Alphabet was a change Google needed to make to remain relevant, fresh and innovative across a number of product initiatives. “The exciting part of IoT is that it is exploding during a time that enterprise customers are well versed in open source technologies,” explained Anders Brown, Managing Director of Luxoft IoT Practice, in this exclusive Q&A; with @ThingsExpo Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff.
Anders Brown: How important are monitoring, analytics, and handling Big Data to your customers?
Today, there is countless data collected and analyzed by companies. Just a few years ago, that data was useless, now data is collected and used to provide answers and solve problems.
As big data use cases continue to evolve, there will be an increasing number of business missions that will be served by new approaches to data. With the adoption of an enterprise data hub, developers are finding new agility to create services and applications, as well as decision-making that leads to market dominating strategies. According to Cognitio's co-founder and partner Bob Gourley, this adoption will lea...
