Stop Thinking ‘Product'; Start Thinking ‘Service'
Manufacturing connected IoT versions of traditional products requires more
than multiple deep technology skills. It also requires a shift in mindset, to
realize that connected, sensor-enabled "things" act more like services than
what we usually think of as products.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Ayla
Networks, will discuss how when sensors start generating detailed real-world
data about products and how they're being used, smart manufacturers can use
the data to create additional revenue streams, such as improved warranties or
premium features. Or slash maintenance costs by replacing parts before they
fail. Or learn from the data to iterate better products that give customers
what they really want.

Making Sense of the Cloud Platform Battle - What You Need to Know to Leverage
the Multi-Cloud for Success
In 2014, the market witnessed a massive migration to the cloud as enterprises
finally overcame their fears of the cloud's viability, security, etc.
Over the past 18 months, AWS, Google and Microsoft have waged an ongoing
battle through a wave of price cuts and new features. For IT executives,
sorting through all the noise to make the best cloud investment decisions has
become daunting.
Enterprises can and are moving away from a "one size fits all" cloud
approach. The new co... (more)

Hyper Converged Infrastructure, a Future Death Trap
In late 1990s, storage and networking came out of compute for a reason. Both
networking and storage need some specialized processing and it doesn't make
sense for all the general purpose servers doing this job. It is better
handled by the specialized group of dedicated devices. The critical element
in the complete data center infrastructure is data. It may be better to keep
this data in the special devices with the required level of redundancy than
spreading across the entire data centers. However, hyper convergence emerged

Public perception of privacy and security in the post-Snowden era has
changed, leading to end users caring vastly more about the topic. Last year,
there were more breaches than ever before; ad-tracking technology has grown
and will keep growing, collecting more and more data; and awareness of
government access to personal data has increased.
Although it is still difficult to fully understand the long-term consequences
of data collection at this level, the concerns are rising both from a user
and a collector point of view. End users, whether they are employees or
customers, are r... (more)

Sep. 5, 2015 07:15 AM EDT Reads: 1,647 | By Elizabeth White Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as... Saving performance testing for a “final sprint” before release still treats it like a waterfall development step, with all the cost and risk that comes with that. In this post, we will show you how to make load testing happen early and often by putting SLAs on the agile task board. Sep. 4, 2015 07:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,670 | By Elizabeth White Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity. According to cyber security experts, the frequency and severity of cyber-attacks are on the rise, causing alarm to businesses and customers across a variety of industries.
