Top Six Reasons to Attend Cloud Expo
There are several hundred good reasons to attend Cloud Expo | @ThingsExpo and the DevOps Summit next week (June 9-11) at the Javits Center in New York. Hundreds of great presentations and exhibits, the world's largest audience at an independent Cloud and IoT event, and the inspiration that one always gets when hearing peers discuss what they are doing in the cloud.
I've winnowed the list down to half a dozen big-picture items. I'm sure you'll have your big reasons as well.

1. Geek Girls
I have a daughter who was an applied math major and is now an actuary, so I get to use the term "geek girls" and I get to be very proud of all women who achieve breakthroughs in STEM areas.
Within that context, I will be very proud to introduce Sandy Carter of IBM and Manjula Talreja of Cisco as the keynote speakers at Cloud Expo on Tuesday, June 10 and Wednesday, June 11, respectively.
Cloud Expo attendees will also find several other women delivering tremendous presentations. The Cloud Expo team, led by our CEO Carmen Gonzalez, actively recruits the best speakers available on more than 150 topics, including the best speakers who happen to be women. We look forward to continuing this tradition at Cloud Expo Santa Clara Nov 3-5, and beyond.
2. It's Alive! (OpenStack)
The OpenStack community just drew 6,000 people to its summit in Vancouver. Then today comes word that Cisco has acquired OpenStack player Piston Cloud and IBM has acquired the (already appropriately named) OpenStack player Blue Box.
Ongoing OpenStack consolidation means there's some validity to it, even if more for private cloud than for its original aim of competing with Amazon's public-cloud offerings.
3. Microservices & Containers
This rates only #3 on this list, but is the #1 story overall in cloud computing so far this year. There's a mighty wind a' blowin' and its scattering old ways of thinking every which way. It's important to remember that microservices aren't necessarily micro-they can provide substantial functionality and complexity - and that the huge promise of containers to reduce overhead has set up a battle among technology providers that will enlighten and clarify things over the next year or so.
4. It's Alive! (PaaS)
PaaS was going to be submerged into cloud infrastructure by now, but this hasn't happened. Designing, deploying, and managing apps and services in a cloud environment is a complex thing to do, and the benefits of a distinct PaaS not only address many of these issues but also ward off an era of Vendor Lock-in 2.0

5. IoT Ascending
The Internet of Things is no longer a curiosity but a quickly rising phenomenon. Not only with wearables, but with major efforts to create Smart Cities throughout the world, and address big problems such as power consumption, transportation, and healthcare.
6. Up with DevOps
We have Andi Mann, one of the world's leading experts and proponents, as our DevOps Summit chair, and he's put together a splendid double-track program in New York. The hyperconvergence, if you will, of distributed computing services and agile development is forcing the issue of DevOps onto organizations of all sizes. We're past the point of worrying about the validity of DevOps; it's time to board the train.

Most cloud integration providers still rely on an ESB architecture and their proprietary connectors. However, the rapid adoption of APIs and almost ubiquitous availability of APIs amongst most SaaS and Cloud applications are rapidly redefining traditional integration approaches and their reliance on proprietary connectors.

Behind every mobile application, smart device, or The Internet of Things (IoT) there is at least one application programming interface (API). These API's and the graphical user interface (GUI) are often interdependent on each other to collect information. For instance, let's take an example of Yelp application. Here google maps API determines which nearby restaurants need to be shown on the mobile screen. Similarly, from the GUI, depending the information you type on the screen (Restaurants, Bars, Coffee places), the API generates a different search result.
There’s a huge push within technology spheres right now to give us the users new things, obviously. So without making this commentary too personal, allow me to make a point.
A colleague from the technology industry who shall remain nameless (hello Tom!) sent me a late night email asking if he should be concerned about not really wanting a smartwatch or getting caught up on the hype.
It almost looks like Internet of Things really came into existence because of the Cloud. It is the most reasonable way (probably the only cost effective way) to operate the IOT.
SAP Hana Cloud Platform also offers the IOT Services a la Cloud. SAP Hana in-memory IOT Platform helps you to quickly develop, deploy and manage your IOT Projects and machine-to-machine applications.
In less than 5 years, “the Internet of Things will transform the data center,” says Gartner. This transformation is predicted to trickle across industries and affect business models, how we market products and even inspire new technology developments. With a sensor on absolutely everything – from cars and houses to your family members – it goes without saying there will be some challenges with these massive amounts of data. Furthermore, there is a lot of uncertainties associated with IoT because of this data. Is it even useful? How do we use it? And, one of the more important questions, how se...
Within the next decade, we are going to see everything from power plants to transportation systems to factories to the appliances in our homes connected together for data collection, analytics, command-and-control, and all sorts of other applications. What is all this going to mean for performance testing? It’s almost impossible to know for sure as so much of this story remains unwritten. However, there are industries where IoT is already happening. Let’s take a look at a few of these and ponder the future of performance testing for IoT applications.
There are standards for making sure the information is safe in transit (SSL) and when stored (PCI, SOC, ISO), but where are the standards around the surface area that APIs represent? We want to expose our data, but not the wrong data and never to the wrong people. APIs are now part of our front-line defense layer and we need to treat it with the same concern and specificity as we do any other security risk.
Two types of APIs dominate the landscape: SOAP and REST web services. SOAP, while implemented widely in the enterprise, is ceding ground to the modern REST pattern for web services. Both...
"There is a natural synchronization between the business models, the IoT is there to support ,” explained Brendan O'Brien, Co-founder and Chief Architect of Aria Systems, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at the 15th International Cloud Expo®, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
No, this isn't a tirade on the security of IoT. It's about story about change. Specifically, change and its implications on security.
Change is constant. There's a million different axioms and proverbs about change, so it's really hard to choose just one to sum up how it impacts security. Inarguably it does. And right now there's a lot of change going on that's impacting security.
"Micro" movement like microservices and microsegmentation are dramatically changing perimeters and breaking apart traditional "edge" security into distributed pockets of security, each architected specifically ...
It was recently revealed that Linux-powered drones were released which has unveiled a new frontier for open source software. Drone control, once limited to proprietary software, has now entered the open source realm. This opens up new possibilities of more flexible platforms for many Internet-connected objects as well as sparking conversation among the open source community about its potential relationship with the Internet of Things (IoT).
Open source software has allowed drone builders and programmers to create a platform using a free open source software development kit. In some cases, i...
Over the last couple of years, something dramatic has happened in how the new generation communicates. Gone are the days of email. Now it is mobile messaging – it is global and becoming the de facto means of communication. Why?
Global messaging leaders are: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat in the US and WeChat (China), LINE (Japan), and KakaoTalk (Korea) in Asia.
WhatsApp was launched in 2009 and has about 800 million monthly average users punching a staggering 30 billion fast messages per day across the globe. Their growth rate is over 60% last year. When Facebook paid over $19 bi...
Today, we’re going to talk about the Internet of Things and Big Data.
Bear with me here. This isn’t going to be some vague, half-cocked article bogged down by buzzwords and vagaries. Instead, what we’re going to do is take a close look at both technologies - what they actually are and what they actually do - in regards to how they’re changing enterprise.
More importantly, we’re going to put forth an explanation of how inextricably the two are connected - and how, by understanding that connection, one’s business can set itself well ahead of the competition. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Let...
