CEO Power Panel in Silicon Valley Examined Agility, Cloud, Big Data, and the 'Internet of Things'
Things are being built upon cloud foundations to transform organizations. This CEO Power Panel at 15th Cloud Expo, moderated by Roger Strukhoff, Cloud Expo and @ThingsExpo conference chair, addressed the big issues involving these technologies and, more important, the results they will achieve. Rodney Rogers, chairman and CEO of Virtustream; Brendan O'Brien, co-founder of Aria Systems, Bart Copeland, president and CEO of ActiveState Software; Jim Cowie, chief scientist at Dyn; Dave Wagstaff, VP and chief architect at BSQUARE Corporation; Seth Proctor, CTO of NuoDB, Inc.; and Andris Gailitis, CIO of DEAC, discussed how important public, private, and hybrid cloud are to the enterprise. How does one define Big Data? And how is the IoT tying all this together?

By Pat Romanski How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends:
Exposing the device to a management framework
Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic
Exposing that business layer and data to end users.
This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happens, where data lives and where the interface lies. For instance, it's a mix of architectural styles ...Mar. 14, 2015 12:15 PM EDT Reads: 3,897 |

The cloud is now a fact of life but generating recurring revenues that are driven by solutions and services on a consumption model have been hard to implement, until now.
In their session at 16th Cloud Expo, Ermanno Bonifazi, CEO & Founder of Solgenia, and Ian Khan, Global Strategic Positioning & Brand Manager at Solgenia, will discuss how a top European telco has leveraged the innovative recurring revenue generating capability of the consumption cloud to enable a unique cloud monetization model to drive results.
As organizations shift toward IT-as-a-service models, the need for managing and protecting data residing across physical, virtual, and now cloud environments grows with it. CommVault can ensure protection &E-Discovery; of your data – whether in a private cloud, a Service Provider delivered public cloud, or a hybrid cloud environment – across the heterogeneous enterprise.
In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Randy De Meno, Chief Technologist - Windows Products and Microsoft Partnerships, will discuss how to cut costs, scale easily, and unleash insight with CommVault Simpana software, the only si...
Analytics is the foundation of smart data and now, with the ability to run Hadoop directly on smart storage systems like Cloudian HyperStore, enterprises will gain huge business advantages in terms of scalability, efficiency and cost savings as they move closer to realizing the potential of the Internet of Things.
In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Paul Turner, technology evangelist and CMO at Cloudian, Inc., will discuss the revolutionary notion that the storage world is transitioning from mere Big Data to smart data. He will argue that today’s hybrid cloud storage solutions, with commodity...
In 2007, there were virtually no mobile apps. Last year alone, over 100 billion apps were downloaded, generating $26 billion in sales. App stores operated by Apple and Google now offer more than a million apps each and people every day depend on apps like Facebook, Google Maps and Uber.
The app economy is here. And – with the coming tide of wearable devices giving rise to a new generation of applications and the Internet of Things taking off – it’s going to get big. Fast. There are app developers right now who are working on ways to connect your TV to your fridge, so you know what drinks are...
With Levi’s Stadium as a backdrop, I share a bit about the Internet of Things and the strain it will place on the Domain Name System (DNS) along with a preview of his DNS of Things session at CloudExpo/ThingsExpo at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Reporting from Silicon Valley.
Bugs. Once upon a time – and not so very long ago – that word had only one meaning: annoying little critters that crawl, sting, bite, and can generally make your life a misery.
But in today’s modern technological age, the word bug has a new meaning: flaws in software applications.
Though the word is the same, the two meanings are quite different. However, both terms represent a common theme: annoyances.
The tables were turned last week when SAP's Amisha Gandhi interviewed me in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress 2015 event on the topic of "Top Trends in Mobility 2015."
Mobile and the Internet of Things (IoT) have thrust many businesses into the era of the truly digital enterprise. This means opening up new channels and business opportunities. APIs are the key, enabling the digital enterprise to connect itself to myriad external apps and partners while cracking open an equally expansive range of fresh internal connections. Everything a digital enterprise touches through a Mobile or IoT device is backed by an API.
As an enterprise, you are consuming more data and services as APIs from third parties than ever before. The question, however, is “Do you know if y...
An explosive combination of technology trends will be where ‘microservices’ and the IoT Internet of Things intersect, a concept we can describe by comparing it with a previous theme, the ‘X Internet.'
The idea of using small self-contained application components has been popular since XML Web services began and a distributed computing future of smart fridges and kettles was imagined long back in the early Internet years.
The Android Wear app that Hyundai demonstrated at CES several weeks ago is now available on Google Play, letting owners of appropriately-equipped models control their cars from their wrists.
The app is basically a scaled-down version of the Blue Link app already available for Android phones — you can start and stop the engine, lock and unlock the doors, find the car if you can't remember where you parked it, and flash the lights, among other things.
The app also supports voice controls, so you can just say things like "find my car" instead of tapping through the UI.
If you're not using the Internet of Things to engage your customers, you should be.
Earlier this week Jessica Groopman from Altimeter published a thought provoking white paper that recommends 5 consumer facing use cases for IoT. For each use case she highlights the value proposition for both the brand and the customer, describes a few key methods for engagement, and closes with some real life examples. While you can download it for free (registration is required), here's my outline of the 5 most compelling uses cases from the report.
Last week I explored how small data, rather than big data, can be a critical component of the Internet of Things.
To drive the point home I went looking for more examples of companies using both small and big data to improve decision-making.
I stumbled across an innovative startup out of Boston named Ovuline who has built a mobile app for women trying to have children.
The app uses data to predict when they are most likely to conceive. You heard that right. Women provide a variety of personal and heal
Recurring revenue business models provide a compelling business proposition: predictable revenue streams, deeper customer engagements, higher customer lifetime value (CLV). What’s not to like? And when you bring the Internet of Things into the mix, there’s even more to like – if you go about it wisely, that is. In this post, we take a look at what works and what doesn’t when it comes to generating incremental revenues from IoT.
First, a caveat. A recurring billing model is not suitable for every IoT product. There are hundreds of great IoT offerings like Sonos speakers and Bluesmart carry-on ...
Michael Porter, author of the most highly regarded of all business strategy theories, Competitive Advantage, describes how there are now three distinct eras of how technology can be defined to impact upon the ability to achieve this advantage.
Michael makes two very important points. The first point is that there has previously been two eras and now there is a third – the first being when corporations started to use IT for automation purposes, described in this 1985 article, followed then by when all of this IT became interconnected via the Internet, described in this 2001 article. Then in th...
As I’m sure most readers of this blog already know, tech media company Gigaom shut its doors earlier this week. Stalwarts of Gigaom’s public-facing news site such as Stacey Higginbotham, Derrick Harris, and founder Om Malik have already offered personal perspectives on their own sites, and I expect others to follow in due course as they digest what happened and chart their own next steps. A strong team of knowledgeable, conscientious and respected journalists and support staff lost their jobs this week. I wish all of them luck in finding something new. But there was another side to Gigaom’s bu...
Instant API is a true API-as-a-Service which makes it easy and cost-effective to build an API. Instant API has simplified all of the key areas of an API’s lifecycle, covering API creation, hosting, management, discovery, monetization, and documentation.
For example, let’s say you have information and services or data and services you want to expose through an API that can be used internally for BYOD initiatives or externally by developers or your business partners. With the API deployed, you still don’t have a mobile app. That’s where the Appery.io platform comes in. Appery.io makes it very e...
While the exact time and place of the creation of cloud computing are open for debate, the latest data shows that the United States has surpassed Europe in cloud adoption and embracing the Internet of Things (IoT). According to both the global analysis and advisory firm IDC and the research firm Gartner, the seesawing numbers now place the US rate of IoT adoption higher than Europe, primarily due to uncertainty of the Euro overseas.
Remember the old joke about the farmer who won the lottery? A reporter asked him what he’d do now, and he responded he’d just keep on farming till the money was gone.
It seems that running a technology news organization is prone to the same fate, as GigaOm discovered this week. Just last year it received an infusion of $8 million from investors, but this week it ran out of money and abruptly shuttered its offices.
GigaOm offered more than tech editorial, however. It was also an industry research firm as well as an events company. By all accounts, both these lines of business were quite s...
