Application Downtime Costs More Than You'd Think
Alan Shimel, editor at DevOps.com, wrote an article today discussing the
findings from a study conducted by IDC, sponsored by AppDynamics, on the cost
of application downtime within the Fortune 1000 (see article here). Bottom
line up front, IDC estimates that application downtime costs the collective
Fortune 1000 an average of $1.25 to $2.5 billion per year. More granularly,
IDC estimates the average hourly cost of an infrastructure failure at
$100,000/hr., and puts the hourly cost for the failure of a critical
application between $500,000 to $1 million.
I remember seeing some figures cited by Gartner that estimated the cost of
application downtime around $42,000/hr. back at the beginning of the
century. If accurate, and there's no reason to believe it wasn't, it
implies that mistakes or misfortune in IT are gettin... (more)
Roaches on the Table: The New Rules of Digital Engagement
Good food is not the most important attribute for a restaurant. Cleanliness
is. It doesn't matter how great your dishes are - if patrons catch even a
glimpse of a roach, they won't stick around to sample your cooking.
The same principle applies to your company's digital experience. You may have
great products at a great price. But if customers have a bad experience with
your digital channels, they won't buy from you. In fact, studies show that
73-82% of customers abandon intended purchases because of a poor online
experien... (more)

For better or worse, DevOps has gone mainstream. All doubt was removed when
IBM and HP threw up their respective DevOps microsites.
Where are we on the hype cycle? It's hard to say for sure but there's a
feeling we're heading for the "Peak of Inflated Expectations."
What does this mean for the enterprise? Should they avoid DevOps? Definitely
not. Should they be cautious though? Absolutely.
The truth is that DevOps and the enterprise are at best strange bedfellows.
The movement has its roots in the tech community's elite.

Big Data Is Driving Datacenter Infrastructure Development
You may have seen last week that we partnered with Cloudera, certifying the
Plexxi Switch on Cloudera’s Enterprise 5 platform.
This partnership, while exciting for us and our partners, plays a larger role
in the IT landscape as a whole. According to an article this week by Arthur
Cole of Enterprise Networking Planet, this move embodies Cole’s belief that
networking infrastructure development is increasingly being driven by Big
Data applications. He cites the key challenge as not finding somewhere to
store all the data (e.g... (more)
@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan The recent trends like cloud computing, social, mobile and Internet of Things are forcing enterprises to modernize in order to compete in the competitive globalized markets.
However, enterprises are approaching newer technologies with a more silo-ed way, gaining only sub optimal benefits.
The Modern Enterprise model is presented as a newer way to think of enterprise IT, which takes a more holistic approach to embracing modern technologies. To take advantage of the opportunities the Internet of Things brings to your business, you'll want to start preparing now. Feb. 12, 2015 07:00 PM EST Reads: 3,575 | By Liz McMillan DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that’s changing with microservices architectures.
In her session at DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks, will focus on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro) services and why that means an expansion into “the network” for DevOps.
