@BigDataExpo has been named the Top 2 Most Influential Big Data Brand by Onalytica in the ‘Big Data: Top 100 Influencers and Brands.' Onalytica analyzed the online #BigData discussion by looking at over 400,000 tweets from around 80,000 users to present the most influential individuals and brands that drive this online discussion.
They discovered that there is a very engaged community of individuals driving the debate. On the other hand the brands seem to be less engaging and that shows that there are good opportunities for brands to create online attention amongst individuals that are interested in Big Data.
@BigDataExpo ranked as the 2nd "Most Influential" #BigData Brand in the World" followed by @CloudExpo at 31st, @ThingsExpo at 44th and @DevOpsSummit at 89th.
Methodology
The PageRank based methodology used to extract influencers on a particular topic (tweets mentioning #BigData in this case) takes into account the number and quality of contextual references that a user receives.
These calculations are independent of a user's number of followers, but Onalytica does filter their lists based on how much a user is engaged in the conversation.

The consequent move toward lean, agile, and fast development leads to the need for the development and operations sides to work very closely together. Thus, DevOps becomes essential for any ambitious enterprise today.

"SOASTA built the concept of cloud testing in 2008. It's grown from rather meager beginnings to where now we are provisioning hundreds of thousands of servers on a daily basis on behalf of customers around the world to test their applications," explained Tom Lounibos, CEO of SOASTA, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at DevOps Summit, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
“The year of the cloud – we have no idea when it's really happening but we think it's happening now. For those technology providers like Zentera that are helping enterprises move to the cloud - it's been fun to watch," noted Mike Loftus, VP Product Management and Marketing at Zentera Systems, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at Cloud Expo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Docker is becoming very popular--we are seeing every major private and public cloud vendor racing to adopt it. It promises portability and interoperability, and is quickly becoming the currency of the Cloud.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Bart Copeland, CEO of ActiveState, discussed why Docker is so important to the future of the cloud, but will also take a step back and show that Docker is actually only one piece of the puzzle. Copeland will outline the bigger picture of where Docker fits and the remaining infrastructure that is needed for large scale adoption by enterprise IT.
The speed of product development has increased massively in the past 10 years. At the same time our formal secure development and SDL methodologies have fallen behind. This forces product developers to choose between rapid release times and security.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Michael Murray, Director of Cyber Security Consulting and Assessment at GE Healthcare, examined the problems and presented some solutions for moving security into the DevOps lifecycle to ensure that we get fast AND secure.
“DevOps is really about the business. The business is under pressure today, competitively in the marketplace to respond to the expectations of the customer. The business is driving IT and the problem is that IT isn't responding fast enough," explained Mark Levy, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Serena Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at DevOps Summit, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
“We are strong believers in the DevOps movement and our staff has been doing DevOps for large enterprise environments for a number of years. The solution that we build is intended to allow DevOps teams to do security at the speed of DevOps," explained Justin Lundy, Founder & CTO of Evident.io, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at DevOps Summit, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Mobile, the cloud and data have upended traditional ways of doing business. Agile, continuous delivery and DevOps have stepped in to hasten product development, but one crucial process still hasn't caught up. Continuous content delivery is the missing limb of the success ecosystem. Currently workers spend countless, non-value add hours working in independent silos, hunting for versions, manually pushing documents between platforms, all while trying to manage the continuous update and flow of multilingual content.
"Application monitoring and intelligence can smooth the path in a DevOps environment. In a DevOps environment you see constant change. If you are trying to monitor things in a constantly changing environment, you're going to spend a lot of your job fixing your monitoring," explained Todd Rader, Solutions Architect at AppDynamics, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at DevOps Summit, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Andrei Yurkevich, CTO at Altoros, provided an overview of all the benefits and opportunities, as well as drawbacks of deploying Cloud Foundry PaaS with Juju and compared it to BOSH. Discover the features that overlap, and understand what Juju Charm is, what it is not, where you use one or the other or where you use both BOSH and Juju Charms together.

On the other hand the brands seem to be less engaging and that shows that there are good opportunities for brands to create online attention amongst individuals that are intere...
Big Data, AI, Machine Learning, Hadoop, Predictive Analytics — we hear these terms every day from companies such as Cloudera, Trifacta and Dato (formerly GraphLab) that are securing many millions in financing. I believe that 2015 will be the year when the conversation moves from Big Data to the Dataware stack. Over the past twelve months we have seen a lot of companies across the big data spectrum emerge and while the language can be the same, there are clear product categories that have emerged...

Enterprise Initiatives Episode: Our guest on the podcast this week is John Willis, Founder and VP of Customer Enablement at SocketPlane. We discuss the effort needed to implement a grassroots DevOps initiative.
Listen in to find out how to gain the essential support of leaders for your project. (Make sure you have both headphones in to hear the full audio of this episode.)
When a CIO or a CTO thinks of the applications they support it is almost always in terms of a "portfolio" When a research company named Gleanster poll executives about agile data management they discovered an interesting trend. Companies are reporting an increase in portfolio sizes with just over 36% of all respondents from large companies listing 75 or more applications in their portfolio.
An operations group tasked with accepting and supporting a software release. This group wants a predictable process, they view releases as incidents to be managed, and they answer to a business that wants predictability and accountability.
One or more development groups tasked with creating software to be released. These groups tend to be more diverse. You might have one development group that is using bleeding-edge technology to create a next-generation website that is more research than dev...
Whenever people discuss DevOps they always speak of a "Wall of Confusion" between development and operations, and while there is certainly a barrier to understanding it's more than just a "wall." I see it more as a "canyon of distrust" or a "gulf of miscommunication." These are all just creative ways of identifying that there is misalignment between development-focused and operation-focused parts of the IT department. On a very simple level development tends to focus on revenue growth while op...
Last week I was able to catch up with Chris Tranter, Technical Lead at Hallmark UK.
Hallmark’s engineering team runs on tight deadlines, and like all popular websites, places a huge importance on customer experience. As you can imagine, their site has abnormal and inconsistent load times, especially through the holiday season. Ensuring a smooth, seamless experience without stalls, outages, or crashes is extremely important.
It was great to see how AppDynamics APM can become a necessary solutio...
At Graphflow, our mission is to empower online stores of all sizes to grow their businesses by providing them access to the same machine learning and Big Data tools used by the largest and most sophisticated tech players in the market.
To deliver on this mission, we decided from the very beginning to go ‘all in’ on Spark for our scalable analytics and machine learning applications. When Graphflow started using Spark, it was on version 0.7.0, and it was relatively immature. A lot has changed o...
TiP is not something to be afraid of. The more you understand what may go wrong and how to take the proper precautions to prevent that, the more successful and efficient your overall app development process will be. Today’s post is about the major risks of Testing in Production, how to mitigate them and ensure you’re getting your best end-product to users.
Here’s a short anecdote: a QA team maintained a test environment separate from their production environment, but they had gone through great lengths to ensure it matched what was in production in every respect. It was filled with the same hardware, and all the software was identical down to the patch level. They had a strong process to ensure that any change made to one environment was mirrored in the other. Perhaps you can see where this story is going. Sure enough, the environments turned out ...
Remote work in ops is divisive. The perks of working from home, your local coffee shop, wherever, can be quite obvious to engineers and contributors. But some team leaders and company execs aren't buying it. One faction sees it as a way to do better quality work. Another has watched deadlines and motivation fall by the wayside because of unresponsive remote workers.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of remote work? What should you consider before you take the plunge into flexible hour...
I began my journey in the Application Performance Management (APM) space a little over two years ago. Transitioning from a security background, the biggest thing I was concerned about was picking up the technology quickly. Somewhere between JVMs, CLRs, JMX, IIS, and APIs I was a little overwhelmed.
The thing that caught my eye most in the early stages of learning about the APM space (outside of AppDynamics’ growth & the growing IT Ops market) was the term Business Transaction Monitoring.

Log data provides the most granular view into what is happening across your systems, applications, and end users. Logs can show you where the issues are in real-time, and provide a historical trending view over time. Logs give you the whole picture.
Traditionally log management and analytics has not been easy. We talk to customers who have spent hours digging through logs, writing complex search queries, and waiting...and waiting... for results to populate.
It’s been only a handful of months since my fellow Forbes pundits Mike Kavis and Ben Kepes bemoaned cloud provider Rackspace’s troubles competing in the cutthroat public cloud marketplace. “Companies like Rackspace simply cannot compete,” opined Kavis in July 2014. Back in May, Kepes snarkily pointed out that “Rackspace has long been something of a bridesmaid,” as they unsuccessfully explored selling themselves to the highest bidder. Yet, just as reports of Mark Twain’s death were exaggerated – ...
As the pace of development and business continues to scale, teams need an agile and collaborative work environment to succeed. Moving to a DevOps model is a critical part of setting your engineering teams up to succeed, but making the transition can be challenging for many companies.
DevOps is a movement in the software world that focuses on collaboration between developers and operations, customer empathy and infrastructure automation. In traditional models, developers write code and then han...
No, it’s not an endless loop waiting to happen, the plan here is to use Logstash to parse Elasticsearch logs and send them to another Elasticsearch cluster or to a log analytics service like Logsene (which conveniently exposes the Elasticsearch API, so you can use it without having to run and manage your own Elasticsearch cluster).
If you’re looking for some ELK stack intro and you think you’re in the wrong place, try our 5-minute Logstash tutorial. Still, if you have non-trivial amounts of dat...
Whether it is JMeter, SoapUI, Load Runner, SilkTest, Neotys or one of the cloud-based load testing solutions such as Keynote, Dynatrace (formerly Gomez) or others, breaking an application under heavy load is easy these days. Finding the problem based on automatically generated load testing reports is not. Can you tell me what is wrong based on the following reports?
I’ve helped engineering organizations over the last 10 – 15 years to either run or analyze load tests. In this blog post I share m...
Gordon Haff wrote an insightful column today about “skeuomorphic virtualizaton,” in other words the notion of thinking of virtual servers as having the same look and feel of the physical machines lying underneath. The upshot is that virtualization ends up just being a form of partioning; users view virtualized instances as no different from a single physical server.
Gordon urges the end of skeuomorphism's reign of terror (my words, not his) now that containers are (back) in the news.
So ...
