CloudOpen 2014 – Mixing Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail
Here’s the presentation I gave at the Linux Foundation’s CloudOpen in Dusseldorf on October 13, 2014 titled Mixing Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail
Add two parts virtualization, one part orchestration add a little networking shake and pour. Unfortunately cloud computing isn’t that easy but then again not all clouds are the same and tastes may vary.
This talk will discuss how the varying open source technologies like OpenStack, Docker, LXC and others can be mixed together to make something that appeals to the needs of a wide variety of users.
There’s also no problem in abstaining from building your own cloud but still benefiting from the open source tooling to maximize the benefits of the public cloud.

WebRTC enabled this contact center provider to eliminate antiquated telephony and desktop phone infrastructure with a pure web-based solution, allowing them to expand beyond brick-and-mortar confines to a home-based agent model. It also ensured scalability and better service for customers, including MUY! Companies, one of the country's largest franchise restaurant companies with 232 Pizza Hut locations. They say that you are only as secure as your weakest firewall. But then is it just firewalls that protect our network and the information therein, or is it the framework the policies and the processes that have cracks that let the vulnerabilities seep through?
Hackers will be hackers and you really can't blame anything on them. They are doing what they are meant to do. i.e Hack. Imagine the scenes from any of the last few Black Fridays with people lined up for days to grab the new flat screen TV or a new iPhone. The moment the gates open up there is usually a crowd of people swarming like bees, trying to get their hands on what they can, and yes there were also many reported cases of snatching, grabbing and what not. If only the world of cloud storage could be so dramatic!
As healthcare providers move into mobile device applications and across enterprise and cloud technologies in the U.S. and abroad, businesses and consumers are demanding more layers of protection. And it’s needed: Recent online security breaches highlight the importance of security, especially as cloud transactions and the IoT become more commonplace.
Attracting new customers and retaining old ones is paramount for most companies, and creating trust goes a long way when it comes to the monetization of online data. Concern over online security can determine what companies customers use, and t...
There is no universal global guideline when it comes to how data is managed, secured, and accessed. Privacy laws vary from country to country and are still being defined in the digital age. In the face of trends like consumerization, mobility, and the distributed workplace, data residency is fast-becoming a vital issue that requires more attention.
Stop and ask yourself. Do you know where your data is?
You may have seen last week that we partnered with Cloudera, certifying the Plexxi Switch on Cloudera’s Enterprise 5 platform.
This partnership, while exciting for us and our partners, plays a larger role in the IT landscape as a whole. According to an article this week by Arthur Cole of Enterprise Networking Planet, this move embodies Cole’s belief that networking infrastructure development is increasingly being driven by Big Data applications. He cites the key challenge as not finding somewhere to store all the data (e.g., storage) but rather how to make it available to “diverse and dispa...
How much time does it take between collecting data and taking meaningful action based upon the insight you are able to glean from those data? Depending on the technology, it might take a week to a month or more.
Today, of course, we can do better than a week. As our technology improves, we can reduce this data-to-action delay to a day or so. Every new tweak carves off an hour or two, and each improvement brings with it incremental value to the business.
Log data provides the most granular view into what is happening across your systems, applications, and end users. Logs can show you where the issues are in real-time, and provide a historical trending view over time. Logs give you the whole picture.
In the age of Big Data we are taught that no pile of data is too large or too complex. This is absolutely true. Most data analysis systems can take any type and volume of data - but ingestion is much different from consumption. The way your data is structured directly impacts its ability to be consumed, understood, and correlated with other data....
Whenever Jack visited me, he used to leave sticky notes on my desk with nuggets of wisdom. For example, “Keep people you trust close to you.”…or, “Key values for Teradata where: Pride, Enthusiasm, Importance of the Individual, Teamwork and Open Communications, Ethics, Dedication, Quality, Support, Success, and Entrepreneurship.”
In the month of July, 1999, Jack Shemer and David Hartke both decided to come out of retirement to help me and my team start a new company, INCEP (along with a few other veterans of the industry including Art Collmeyer, Bob Adams, and Phil Paul). Little did I know, Ja...
The explosion in SMAC technologies (social, mobile, analytic, and cloud) in recent years has created unprecedented opportunities for those who can code. Indeed, programmers are the gatekeepers who are on the frontlines of the most momentous technological transformation in our history. Those who can code the mobile apps, the games, or the automation software of our digital world will demand the best jobs and garner the biggest promotions.

The word DevOps is a portmanteau of “development” and “operations”. However, anyone who knows “The Phoenix Project” by Gene Kim et al. will agree that its radius is much wider than what the term suggests: it’s a melting pot that combines principles from Agile Software Development and Lean Manufacturing with the aim to reduce friction and improve collaboration by honing a culture of communication, respect and trust across Product Management, Development, Testing, IT Operations, Information Security, Marketing, Sales and Technical Support departments, as well as to continuously improve organizat...

The Internet of Things (IoT) is really the morphing of physical devices into a software world. This means a lot of the same things you would do with applications and servers, you can now do with devices, including leveraging data to respond faster to issues, track trends, and improve your roadmap.
The Internet of Things, Internet of Everything...
The dust has settled from CES 2015. The Internet of Things was front and center throughout the show, a reflection of its rapidly expanding presence in products and services for consumers and businesses alike. IoT played a vital role in hundreds of products on display, including dazzling innovations such as self-driving cars and the latest drones. Here are three trends that emerged from CES that will shape the direction of IoT monetization in 2015 and beyond.
There’s no denying we’re in the midst of a cloud craze – but, behind all the hype, is cloud adoption really imperative? How much of the cloud buzz is fabrications of possible benefits, and how much of it is reality? To decipher what’s true and what’s false, I’ve put together a list of five reasons why cloud adoption is important, based on the facts.
Freedom from responsibility and costs. Yes, when you move services to a cloud provider, you immediately relinquish some control. However, you instantly free yourself from the cost of hardware and server management, and gain back the time (or manpo...
Utilizing data-driven intelligence across the enterprise requires solutions that enable interactive, self-service ways of working with historical and near real-time data. Core Hadoop platform has already solved many of the fundamental (legacy) Big Data access and availability problems. With the addition of standalone query engine Apache Drill, data analysts finally have the freedom to follow their data queries easily across multiple data sources, on demand.
