Agility is top of mind for Cloud/Service providers and Enterprises alike. Policy Driven Data Center provides a policy model for application deployment by decoupling application needs from the underlying infrastructure primitives. In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, David Klebanov, a Technical Solutions Architect with Cisco Systems, discussed how it differentiates from the software-defined top-down control by offering a declarative approach to allow faster and simpler application deployment.

There are 182 billion emails sent every day, generating a lot of data about how recipients and ISPs respond. Many marketers take a more-is-better approach to stats, preferring to have the ability to slice and dice their email lists based numerous arbitrary stats. However, fundamentally what really matters is whether or not sending an email to a particular recipient will generate value.

Data Scientists can design high-level insights such as engagement prediction models and content clusters that allow marketers to cut through the noise and design their campaigns around strong, predictive signals, rather than arbitrary statistics.

SendGrid sends up to half a billion emails a day for customers such as Pinterest and GitHub.
All this email adds up to more text than produced in the entire twitterverse. We track events like clicks, opens and deliveries to help improve deliverability for our customers - adding up to over 50 Billion useful events every month.

While SendGrid data covers only about 2% of all non-spam email activity in the world, it gives SendGrid a unique snapshot of email activity spanning from the senders to the recipients and inbox providers like gmail and yahoo. To cope with data of this scale SendGrid has designed and implemented custom data structures to store 10s of billions of items in memory on a single commodity machine.
In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Aaron Beach, Senior Data Scientist at SendGrid, discussed how SendGrid has used technologies like this to predict recipient behavior and improve sender deliverability at minimal cost per email.
He shareed his research based on analysis of billions of email interactions:
- The data we collect: Email activity and SMTP events
- The problems we solve: Predicting recipient engagement
- The data structure we use: Combinatorial Bloom Filters
Through a deep dive into back-end email systems, data scientists can profile inbox behaviors to learn how to reduce spam complaints, increase delivery and improve recipient engagement.
Speaker Bio:
Aaron Beach is a data scientist with experience in email services, energy systems, privacy, social networks, mobile apps, natural language processing, recommendation systems and Big Data. He has a PhD in Computer Science and has published over 25 research papers.

The cast of characters includes the agency head [city official? elected official?...
Selling your startup’s product using a freemium model can be an enticing option early on, seemingly offering you the best chance to get as many new customers on board using your product as possible. Be aware however that going with a freemium model may distract you from your real goals, and ultimately harm your business.
So you’re new to the market and need to convince investors that your product is a good fit to your target customers. You need to demonstrate market traction to get investor attention, and your new product isn’t 100% ready yet anyway. So why not kickstart your business by gi...
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an approach for abstracting enterprise software capabilities as reusable services in order to support more flexible business processes and ideally, more agile organizations. SOA was one of the hottest topics in information technology (IT) back offices and enterprise vendor marketing departments for a number of years back in the 2000s.
However, in retrospect the original promise of SOA was largely unrealized at that time. Vendors used the approach to sell middleware, which led to expensive and difficult implementations. The architectural focus on improv...
Log data provides the most granular view into what is happening across your systems, applications, and end users. Logs can show you where the issues are in real-time, and provide a historical trending view over time. Logs give you the whole picture.
In a previous post I described how you can log from your java applications to Logentries using log4j and logback with our open source le_java repository on github. Well now thanks to github user joshuadavis you can now log from log4j2 too!
See our product documentation on how to get started with le_java and log4j2, and here is theapache docume...
I recently poured over F5’s “The State of Application Delivery in 2015” and InformationWeek’s “2015 App Dev Priorities Survey” that they presented with Dr. Dobb’s. The similarity of their titles, and even their release dates made me wonder how unique each of their findings would be, and I challenged myself to flush out any interesting findings or patterns that emerged from their collective research.
Both reports were really well done, and I would recommend them to anyone looking to see if your organization is on the right path of change, or to anyone who knows you’re not on the right path,...
Digital transformation isn’t about the technology, and in reality it never was, even when we called it ebusiness or perhaps interactive marketing. It’s about building relationships between people. And today’s primary mechanism for a company to build a relationship between its employees and its customers and prospects is via content marketing.
The security landscape is evolving more than ever before – not only must chief information security officers (CISOs) deal with constant increasing cyber-attack threats and security breaches but they must keep up with mobility trends and concerns about access to data and protecting identities. Mobility is growing at a fast pace, and though it may be easy to construct more barriers to data access, there are much more effective approaches.
This is aimed to be your one-stop-shop for everything microservices: Interesting posts and interesting people. Microservices is a software architecture approach that propagates small (in terms of responsibility) and independent components instead of monolithic all-in-one components. Service oriented architecture. It shares the idea of separate services, and has been around for over a decade now. As opposed to microservices, it has the image of an enterprisey, heavy-weight methodology.
I’m writing this blog on Monday, February 9th, late afternoon with a very full stomach. Last week we launched Vormetric Tokenization with Dynamic Data Masking and today we took the engineers out for a big lunch to celebrate. Now feeling full and contemplative, I thought I’d join the club and write about the big industry news: Anthem’s massive loss of customer and employee data.
The explosion in SMAC technologies (social, mobile, analytic, and cloud) in recent years has created unprecedented opportunities for those who can code. Indeed, programmers are the gatekeepers who are on the frontlines of the most momentous technological transformation in our history. Those who can code the mobile apps, the games, or the automation software of our digital world will demand the best jobs and garner the biggest promotions.
There are no lack of opportunities in software programming and development, and more and more folks are jumping on the bandwagon – either refreshing previous...
In Agent version 1.61 we introduced support for the communication protocol Thrift.
Thrift is a cross-platform cross-language communication framework that behaves very much like web services and so therefore automatically show ups in ruxit monitoring.
It’s used by a wide variety projects, most prominent among them, Cassandra.
Thus you can now see Cassandra databases as a service, see traffic into Cassandra from your Java application’s perspective, and analyze Cassandra query code performance.
Imagine the scenes from any of the last few Black Fridays with people lined up for days to grab the new flat screen TV or a new iPhone. The moment the gates open up there is usually a crowd of people swarming like bees, trying to get their hands on what they can, and yes there were also many reported cases of snatching, grabbing and what not. If only the world of cloud storage could be so dramatic!

Modern infrastructure constantly generates log data at a rate faster than humans can easily analyze. And now that data centers can be built and torn down with scripts, the amount of activity and data is exponential.
