2014 has been another year of growth and change for the workload automation industry. As the industry continues to evolve and mature, we are seeing workload automation becoming a necessary staple for most enterprises. According to leading technology analysts, 2015 promises to continue the trend of digitalizing business. From cloud computing and Big Data analytics to the Internet of Things, digitalization is expanding into every corner of our business and personal lives.
As a result of this digitalization, IT is continuing to play an integral role in today's accelerating rate of business. Real-time data demands, SLA requirements, and software-defined applications and infrastructure all require more flexible and nimble IT operations. To keep up with business demands and handle the diversity of technologies, workload automation is responding with new solutions and capabilities that are making automation a core part of IT operations architecture. Here are our top predictions for workload automation in 2015:
1. Consolidation of Point Tools
In the Market Guide for Workload Automation, Gartner estimates that most large organizations have more than three workload automation tools implemented in their environment. The biggest problem for organizations with this kind of strategy is that they implement workload automation as silos, resulting in higher costs and a lack of agility For example, organizations may use a job scheduling tool for batch processes, a runbook automation tool for IT operations, and an HR tool for the onboarding and offboarding of employees. We predict organizations will move away from this disjointed, elemental approach and adopt an architectural strategy with a comprehensive automation solution that can handle end-to-end workflows across the various platforms, applications, and technologies that comprise today's IT environment. Organizations will move away from legacy schedulers with a script-based approach in favor of solutions that can accommodate their existing scripts and also provide production-ready templates where the logic has already been tested.
2. Cloud Resource Management Capabilities
Virtual and cloud computing will continue to gain ground, with more businesses adopting a hybrid cloud strategy and replacing some of their on-premise computing with virtual/cloud resources. As the infrastructure changes, so will the methods and tools IT uses to manage the organization's consumption of virtual and cloud resources. Workload automation is expanding beyond the traditional scheduling of workflows and executing processes by focusing on identifying the amount of resources that are needed to successfully complete the workflow. Just as smart thermostat systems raise and lower the temperature according to your activities, an intelligent automation solution can essentially spin up more machines when more computing power is needed to complete jobs, as well as spin down machines during idle times. Workload automation is combining predictive and reactive forms of resource management not only to schedule workflows, but also to proactively provision, schedule, and distribute the necessary virtual and cloud resources on the fly. The future holds even more possibilities in this area as workload automation can take factors such as your public cloud budget and provision resources so as to stay within that budget.
3. DevOps and Improved Collaboration
DevOps and agile methodologies are leading the way in shortening application release cycles so businesses can achieve improved deployment frequency with lower failure rates. In order to do this consistently and effectively, automation is required to ensure repeatability of deployment tasks and minimize manual intervention. Workload automation solutions will help with streamlining and automating DevOps processes to facilitate collaboration between Developers and Operations. Using pre-templated job steps and reference plans minimizes time spent scripting and performing repetitive processes. Advanced capabilities such as allowing multiple contributors to work on one or more objects together will allow faster collaboration with improved access.
4. Self-Service Automation
Self-Service is pushing the boundaries of traditional workload automation by putting the power in the hands of the users. Allowing business end users to initiate a process or workflow without involving someone from IT minimizes the burden on IT's shoulders, thereby improving IT service levels for the business overall. For example, Human Resources could initiate the onboarding and offboarding of employees in batches or singularly, adding them to a user group, setting permissions, and creating an Exchange account with a simple, repeatable process that requires just a few drag-and-drop steps. Improved user interfaces will emerge and allow for greater visibility across the organizations so business users can more easily gain insight into their application processing. Additionally, web and mobile capabilities will provide IT and business users with better accessibility and flexibility in executing workflows.
5. Improved Data and Analytics
The pervasiveness of data collection in our society has grown exponentially. From social media to wearables, data is becoming deeply embedded in our everyday lives. As businesses enter the world of Big Data and Big Data analytics, workload automation must respond. Automation will provide a significant advantage to organizations using Big Data by reliably executing complex workflows needed to process unstructured and structured data. Additionally, modern workload automation solutions that provide a centralized viewpoint for workflows and processes will be more heavily relied upon as the need for more enhanced monitoring of Big Data dependencies, constraints, and workflows continues to grow.

While change definitely can bring unprecedented opportunity to drive topline revenue and improved efficiency, it can also bring obstruction and more challenges for core business operations and infrastructure if not dealt with properly. More specifically, change can come in many different ways such as expansion into new countries, new and enhanced product lines, a merger or acquisition, different customers and even new suppliers and distributors. All of these changes can provide vast opportunities for growth, but only if a business is ready to get the most out of them.

I suspect that the success of Agile teams was one of the reasons for the birth of the DevOps movement, as development teams began to wonder about whether they could extend Agile towards c...

Regardless of the business or industry you’re in, there’s no doubt that a successful year is at the forefront of your strategy. And at the helm driving that success is revenue. How much risk do you have of someone stealing disks from your datacenter? Take the average life span of a hard drive. The enterprise class hard drive is designed to last a minimum of 5 years. So if you take the same approach to securing data in your datacenter as you did with your laptop, what risk have you really mitigated? None. 99.999% of the time, as that disk is up and running in the datacenter you have provided ZERO additional protection for your data. Just because it say...

A few years ago, there was much ado about the “consumerization” of IT, and its impact on IT operations. The end of the year typically brings about a frenzy of news, reviews and forecasts about the next year, and rightfully so one of the top industry predictions for 2015 relate to the Cloud.
According to IDC, “the global cloud market, including private, public and hybrid clouds, will hit $118 billion in 2015 and crest at $200 billion by 2018. If the market shows that much growth next year, it will mean a 23.2% rise over the $95.8 billion market it reached in 2014.”
Industry analysts and pundits have speculated about the major growth areas of the cloud in 2015 and a majority of the predictions r...
No trend is currently as hot as containers and particularly the popular container management system Docker. Although arguably just maturing, it has already reached almost mythical proportions of cloud hype. Docker would make virtualization superfluous, replace PaaS all together and thanks to unparalleled portability will put a final end to decades of platform and vendor lock-in. As a result there currently is no start-up or cloud provider who has not incorporated Docker prominently in its 2015 strategy.
Cloud computing adds flexibility to enterprise IT. When companies wish to take advantage of this, they are finding they need to turn to microservices instead of their traditional, monolithic architectures to accommodate frequent change.
Microservices can overcome the challnges presented by frequent change, “by splitting monoliths into multiple independent services, each with its own simple business logic,” according to Sergey Sverchkov, a Solutions Architect with Altoros. Doing so leads to another issue: “choosing either PaaS or IaaS for microservices is an open question, “ he says.

Cyber security is rapidly becoming a significant issue in the C-suite as well as the population at large. The results of Dell's Global Technology Adoption Index(GTAI) [1] show that security is a top concern for most of the 2000 global small and medium businesses surveyed. The outcomes further noted that such concerns create barriers to the adoption of critical technologies that drive value and growth: mobility, cloud and big data. In fact, many businesses are unprepared to address their potential security issues.
