Software Defined Storage provides many benefits for customers including agility, flexibility, faster adoption of new technology and cost effectiveness. However, for IT organizations it can be challenging and complex to build your Enterprise Grade Storage from software.
![]()
In his session at Cloud Expo, Paul Turner, CMO at Cloudian, looked at the new Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) market and how it is changing the storage world. Now Software Defined Storage companies can build Enterprise grade rack-ready appliances using commodity servers and still provide all the benefits of Software Defined Storage. You too can have Enterprise Grade at 1C per GB per month.

Gridstore™ is the leader in hyper-converged infrastructure purpose-built for Microsoft workloads and designed to accelerate applications in virtualized environments. Gridstore’s hyper-converged infrastructure is the industry’s first all flash version of HyperConverged Appliances that include both compute and storag...
Today’s enterprise is being driven by disruptive competitive and human capital requirements to provide enterprise application access through not only desktops, but also mobile devices. To retrofit existing programs across all these devices using traditional programming methods is very costly and time consuming – often prohibitively so.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., discussed how you can create applications that run on all mobile devices as well as laptops and desktops using a visual drag-and-drop application – and eForms-buildi...
We certainly live in interesting technological times. And no more interesting than the current competing IoT standards for connectivity. Various standards bodies, approaches, and ecosystems are vying for mindshare and positioning for a competitive edge. It is clear that when the dust settles, we will have new protocols, evolved protocols, that will change the way we interact with devices and infrastructure. We will also have evolved web protocols, like HTTP/2, that will be changing the very core of our infrastructures. At the same time, we have old approaches made new again like micro-services...
Code Halos - aka "digital fingerprints" - are the key organizing principle to understand a) how dumb things become smart and b) how to monetize this dynamic.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Robert Brown, AVP, Center for the Future of Work at Cognizant Technology Solutions, outlined research, analysis and recommendations from his recently published book on this phenomena on the way leading edge organizations like GE and Disney are unlocking the Internet of Things opportunity and what steps your organization should be taking to position itself for the next platform of digital competition.
The 3rd International Internet of @ThingsExpo, co-located with the 16th International Cloud Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY - announces that its Call for Papers is now open.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the biggest idea since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
As the Internet of Things unfolds, mobile and wearable devices are blurring the line between physical and digital, integrating ever more closely with our interests, our routines, our daily lives. Contextual computing and smart, sensor-equipped spaces bring the potential to walk through a world that recognizes us and responds accordingly. We become continuous transmitters and receivers of data.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Andrew Bolwell, Director of Innovation for HP's Printing and Personal Systems Group, discussed how key attributes of mobile technology – touch input, sensors, social, and ...

Apache Spark is an open-source, large-scale data processing engine built on top of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and enables applications in Hadoop clusters to run up to 100x faster in memory, and 10x faster even when running on disk. So it’s not surprising the usage of Spark is booming as this Google Trends […]
Today, the world has changed. Applications have changed. Enterprise IT is undergoing rapid reinvention. As a result, APM is now at the crux of the digital transformation trend. And squarely in the center of this firestorm is San Francisco-based AppDynamics.
Ask any teenager about applications and they’ll look at you funny and say, “you mean, apps?” and hold up their smartphone. Today, mobile apps lead the reinvention of the application, filtering down from the consumer space into all corners ...
If so, you are not alone! We talk to a lot of people who want to reduce the frequent “noise” from monitoring alarms. To solve this common problem, Sematext added anomaly detection for alerts and PagerDuty integration to its SPM Performance Monitoring solution to dramatically reduce this noise compared with simple threshold-based alerting mechanisms. The integration with PagerDuty helps DevOps with incident management, i.e., managing escalation and routing alerts to the right person by defined...
Gone are the days when IT was seen as unimportant or unchanging. IT is no longer only about supporting employees—it integral to businesses. CEOs have taken note of the fact that customers are more likely to interact with your brand through an app than a person, and companies are trying to reposition themselves in the new application economy. That allows IT departments to be more innovative and flex their creative muscles.
This is the final installment of the six-part series Microservices and PaaS.
It seems like forever since I attended Adrian Cockroft's meetup focusing on microservices. It's actually only been a couple of months, but much has happened since then: countless articles, meetups, and conference sessions focusing on microservices have been delivered, many meetings and design efforts at companies moving towards a microservices-based approach have been endured, and five installments of this blog series ...
Our expectations for buying all sorts of consumer goods has gone through a radical transformation we now take for granted. Why should we not expect this same level of service from IT businesses? We accept the status quo for how software delivery exists today but would reject it without hesitation if it were applied to pretty much any other online consumer experience.
Take pizza delivery as an example. Fifteen years ago ordering a pizza meant trying to choose an item from a grease-stained menu s...
Finance experts say the continued profits from Compuware’s mainframe business will be key to paying off the debt from the company’s $2.4-billion buyout.
A business plan based on giant mainframes might seem precarious and antiquated in today’s era of cloud computing and wearable devices. But industry experts note that predictions of an imminent Death of the Mainframe have been coming for decades and were always proven wrong.

HashiCorp, a San Francisco-based start-up founded in 2012, has recently released its first commercial product, called Atlas. HashiCorp is known by many people as the creator of a number of open-source tools that assist in developing, deploying, and maintaining applications. One major challenge for IT shops is that so many tools are required to automate the building and delivery of software that engineers spend far too much time trying to tie all of these tools together, which takes away time fro...
Consumer VCs like to make light of the Founders Fund mantra ‘We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters.' For those of us working in the enterprise, it's actually the reverse, "They promised us 140 characters, instead we got Workday."
Since 2010, SaaS applications were supposed to "consumerize", but as anyone who has used the majority of SaaS applications released prior to 2014 knows, they are still clunky, punishing interfaces that happen to be hosted in someone else's datacenter. ...
While the initial usage of the Cloud Platform was clearly for the IaaS offerings, the trend is shifting and the PaaS delivery model is gaining a lot of attention. Most of the analysts like IDC and Gartner have predicted huge growth for PaaS in the coming years. IDC predicts Platform as a Service (PaaS) and cloud storage services will be the fastest-growing categories, driven by major upticks in developer cloud services adoption and Big Data-driven solutions, respectively.
Over the past year we've published some great posts on the ActiveState blog, all worth a read (if you haven't already). Phil Whelan (@philwhln), Bernard Golden (@bernardgolden), John Wetherill (@bcferrycoder), and Troy Topnik (@troytop) have contributed some excellent articles on Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), DevOps, Docker, Cloud Foundry, virtualization, microservices...the list goes on. So in case you missed it, here are 12 cloud computing blogs written in 2014 that you need to read:
@ThingsExpo has been named the Top 5 Most Influential M2M Brand by Onalytica in the ‘Machine to Machine: Top 100 Influencers and Brands.' Onalytica analyzed the online debate on M2M by looking at over 85,000 tweets to provide the most influential individuals and brands that drive the discussion. According to Onalytica the "analysis showed a very engaged community with a lot of interactive tweets. The M2M discussion seems to be more fragmented and driven by some of the major brands present in the...
The 15th International Cloud Expo and 2nd ThingsExpo finished up last week at the Santa Clara Convention Center. There were many exhibitors, many attendees, and many great sessions. Discussions were lively throughout, continuing after hours after each of the three days of the show.
Here's what I learned:
Hybrid cloud and multi-cloud are a reality. This may seem obvious to anyone in the industry, and it was confirmed throughout each day last week. Cloud is not going to be a ubiquitous util...
"The year ahead brings accelerated disruption, as those technologies which we spoke about last year as being emergent -- have now begun to evolve to practical application," stated Puneet Gupta, Brillio's Chief Technology Officer. "We are seeing the industry's rapid adoption of next-generation platforms and services centered on cloud, mobility, big data and the Internet of Things. In terms of requirements, IoT systems require the ability: to gather, process and store all the data from a wide range of different of sensors; to produce alerts on certain conditions being detected in the incoming data; to analyze or view historical data with incoming sensor data.
"Appcore has been around since January 2008. We exclusively built clouds for service providers. We've been working with CloudStack since about that same time and our software sits on top of CloudStack," stated Jeff Tegethoff, CEO of Appcore, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 15th Cloud Expo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
'Tis the season of light. With Diwali recently concluded, we've now entered the days of the Hannukah Festival, the Advent Season, the Nativity Fast, and in the Philippines, the onset of Simbang Gabi (“Night Mass”), a series of evening services as Christmas approaches. The Yule log is also burning metaphorically if not literally throughout much of the Western world. All center on the presence of light.
As we enter the new year, fireworks will be obstreperously on display throughout the world,...
