Missing Link: #DevOps and #IoT By @RachelChalmers | @DevOpsSummit

In 2013 alone, venture capitalists spent more than $1 billion dollars investing in the IoT space

Searching for the Missing Link: DevOps and IoT

Enthusiasm for the Internet of Things has reached an all-time high. In 2013 alone, venture capitalists spent more than $1 billion dollars investing in the IoT space. With "smart" appliances and devices, IoT covers wearable smart devices, cloud services to hardware companies. Nest, a Google company, detects temperatures inside homes and automatically adjusts it by tracking its user's habit. These technologies are quickly developing and with it come challenges such as bridging infrastructure gaps, abiding by privacy concerns and making the concept a reality. These challenges can't be addressed without the kinds of agile software development and infrastructure approaches pioneered by the DevOps movement.

In her session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Rachel Chalmers, Principal at Ignition Partner, will discuss an investor's perspective on the IoT, provide an overview of the potential barriers such as security and interoperability for widespread adoption, and how DevOps can help overcome these barriers.

Key messages:

  • General overview of IoT
  • What the IoT means for personal security and privacy
  • Widespread adoption of the IoT and what this means for the future
  • How to use DevOps to fill in the gaps

Speaker Bio:
Rachel Chalmers joined Ignition as a principal in 2013. She sources deals in enterprise and cloud infrastructure, "big data" and the "Internet of Things"; advises portfolio companies and provides counsel on industry trends.

Prior to Ignition, Rachel worked for 13 years at the 451 Group, an independent technology industry analyst firm focused on the business of enterprise IT innovation. She was most recently the company's vice-president of research, overseeing all work on enterprise infrastructure software. Coverage areas included hypervisors, operating systems, provisioning and automation, application development, performance monitoring and lifecycle management. While at 451, Rachel was among the first analysts to cover Opsware, BladeLogic, VMware, Splunk and Cloudera.

Before becoming a technology analyst, Rachel was a journalist in the U.S. and Australia. She helped launch Computer Week, later PC Week Australia, and was the Internet editor for Computerwire, where she wrote about software and open-source technologies.

Rachel received a BA in English from the University of Sydney and a master's in philosophy, with a focus on Anglo-Irish literature, from Trinity College, Dublin. She is an advisor to the Ada Initiative, a non-profit that supports women in open technology and culture.

DevOps: Disruptive but Essential in a Cloud Computing Universe

The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.

The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo--to be held November 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the heart of Silicon Valley--will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.

DevOps Summit content doubled from a single track in New York to two simultaneous tracks: "Dev" Developer Focus and "Ops" Operations Focus.

Join DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann and Host Alan Shimel, November 4-6 for three days of intense DevOps discussion and focus.

We'll see you in Santa Clara! See you in November!

The Domain Name Service (DNS) is one of the most important components in networking infrastructure, enabling users and services to access applications by translating URLs (names) into IP addresses (numbers). Because every icon and URL and all embedded content on a website requires a DNS lookup loading complex sites necessitates hundreds of DNS queries. In addition, as more internet-enabled ‘Things' get connected, people will rely on DNS to name and find their fridges, toasters and toilets. Acco...

Software-driven innovation is becoming a primary approach to how businesses create and deliver new value to customers. A survey of 400 business and IT executives by the IBM Institute for Business Value showed businesses that are more effective at software delivery are also more profitable than their peers nearly 70 percent of the time (1). DevOps provides a way for businesses to remain competitive, applying lean and agile principles to software development to speed the delivery of software that ...
There is no doubt that Big Data is here and getting bigger every day. Building a Big Data infrastructure today is no easy task. There are an enormous number of choices for database engines and technologies. "Cloud consumption is something we envision at Solgenia. That is trying to let the cloud spread to the user as a consumption, as utility computing. We want to allow the people to just pay for what they use, not a subscription model," explained Ermanno Bonifazi, CEO & Founder of Solgenia, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at Cloud Expo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Docker offers a new, lightweight approach to application portability. Applications are shipped using a common container format and managed with a high-level API. Their processes run within isolated namespaces that abstract the operating environment independently of the distribution, versions, network setup, and other details of this environment. This "containerization" has often been nicknamed "the new virtualization." But containers are more than lightweight virtual machines. Beyond their small...

Some developers believe that monitoring is a function of the operations team. Some operations teams firmly believe that monitoring the systems they maintain is sufficient to run the business successfully. Most of them are wrong. The complexity of today's applications have gone far and beyond the capabilities of "traditional" system-level monitoring tools and approaches and requires much broader knowledge of business and applications as a whole. When an enterprise builds a hybrid IaaS cloud connecting its data center to one or more public clouds, security is often a major topic along with the other challenges involved. Security is closely intertwined with the networking choices made for the hybrid cloud. Consequently this approach requires risky, deep "surgery" including changes to firewalls, subnets...
