The Intangible Benefits of APM
In a perfect world, Application Performance Management (APM) has all the right elements in place, providing value to the business and IT by giving us the metrics we need and showing us the health of our applications.
It alerts us to anomalies when slowdowns occur, and shows us trends on performance. But there are other elements in play that can make the operations a little smoother and our days a little brighter.
Neutralize Emotions
Having the ability to engage in a fact based conversation about the end-user-experience, instead of "spinning" infrastructure metrics and making assumptions about performance, is an elegant proficiency. Taking the emotion out of performance related problems for critical business applications is one of the intangible benefits that an APM solution can bring to your table.
The secret to this elixir is integration & automation. It comes from the need to do more with less, as scarce IT resources are asked to continue to provide high availability, improve efficiency, and speed up time to market. The benefit is derived from correlating bottom-up monitoring (Infrastructure monitoring) with insights from top-down monitoring (real-time application monitoring) all within the context of the end-user-experience (EUE).
Strengthen the Trust Between Dev and Ops
Following the classic management philosophy of what you want to improve you measure and what you measure you improve, APM will do just that. Building a performance baseline and highlighting the anomalies that breach its threshold is a valuable act across all environments.
For example, when looking at the entire system development lifecycle, how extensible will your APM solution be? If it is flexible enough to integrate ubiquitously, and dynamic enough to be configured rapidly, then you will be poised for expansion and be ready to begin monitoring anything that comes your way.
Collecting and analyzing metrics that will support an amplified feedback loop between Development and Operations will help strengthen the trust between the teams.

Charmed by the deep insight and easily understood metrics of a well-defined APM dashboard, your business leaders will begin to trust you over time as the performance metrics begin to align with their observations of the end-user-experience.
