SYS-CON Events announced today that StackIQ will exhibit at SYS-CON's 15th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on November 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Contact @StackIQ for your FREE @CloudExpo pass.
StackIQ offers a comprehensive software suite that automates the deployment, provisioning, and management of Big Infrastructure. With StackIQ’s software, you can spin up fully configured big data clusters, quickly and consistently — from bare-metal up to the applications layer — and manage them efficiently. Our software’s modular architecture allows customers to integrate nearly any application with the StackIQ software stack.
Two of the founders of StackIQ will also present at Cloud Expo Silicon Valley.
Mason Katz / Co-Founder, CTO
Mason Katz is the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of StackIQ. Prior to joining StackIQ, he co-founded the open-source Rocks Clusters Group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) located on the campus of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). He has 20 years of experience in distributed and networked systems. His first job was as an 8-bit embedded software engineer, where he integrated first generation GPS units into a national grid of weather

sensors. It was here that he discovered his passion for creating highly automated, maintainable, and supportable systems. He then took his embedded experience into the OS kernel arena and spent several years developing research-oriented network protocol stacks (x-kernel and IPSec) for Linux. For the last half of his career his primary focus has been on the design of software to manage commodity Linux clusters. As a co-founder of the Rocks Cluster Group, he helped position Rocks as the de facto standard in Linux cluster management.
Greg Bruno / Ph.D., Co-Founder, VP of Engineering
Greg Bruno is the Vice President of Engineering and co-founder of StackIQ. Prior to joining StackIQ, he co-founded the open-source Rocks Cluster Group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) located on the campus of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCSD where he researched parallel file systems. Prior to the Rocks Cluster Group, he worked for 10 years at Teradata Systems where he developed cluster management software for the systems that supported the world’s largest databases. He spent the last 10 years helping to architect, design and implement the Rocks Cluster Distribution, an open-source software stack that enables domain-specific users to build and manage their own clusters.

It’s a clear message being heard across the industry - widespread adoption of cloud applications is only a matter of time. However, the tricky part for many is, how much time do organizations actually have to hold out? And why should they switch?
For starters – the cost savings are clear. Research has shown that most organizations rapidly realize significant cost savings that increase over time as they leave behind the array of indirect costs related to legacy on-premise software. A recent IDC study showed that cloud solutions offer an average payback period of 7.1 months and 5-year average R...
Change is constant, and over the last decade the nexus of two trends in particular has transformed the enterprise. Mobile technology and cloud software are fundamentally changing the way we interact internally within businesses, and externally with partners and customers.
Never before have workers enjoyed such freedom and flexibility. The days of being tied to a desk, manning a landline, are gone. Distributed teams can collaborate easily via virtual workplaces. Mobile technology provides access to the business world from any location and the cloud delivers the necessary data and software.
Each of the G20 member countries outlined a Comprehensive Growth Strategy at the recent G20 Summit in Brisbane, Australia. One of the more aggressive plans comes from Brazil, which has pledged to train 12 million young people in technical areas by 2018.
The program is called Pronatec, and is administered by the Ministries of Labor and Education jointly with local councils. The program has actually been in effect since 2011, already reaching 8 million students, according to the report. It targets an additional 4 million students over the next four years. Its cost was listed as more than US$6...
Cloud security is a top concern for any organization migrating to the cloud. The threats are many.
For example, the fact your data resides in a shared, multi-tenant environment is a threat that has become a reality with the latest Xen virtualization bug, which allowed a malicious fully virtualized server to read data about other virtualized systems running on the same physical hardware or the hypervisor).
Other threats to cloud security include internal employees and even governments.
The consensus is that data encryption is a critical first step to migrating to the cloud; but in fact, en...
The notion of a database silo – that is, a single database that contains everything and operates in isolation – is a rapidly fading concept in most companies. Many use multiple databases to take advantage of the different range of functionality, from their transactional store, to caching and session stores using NoSQL and, more recently, the transfer of information into analytical stores such as Hadoop.
This raises a problem when it comes to moving the data about. There are many different solutions available if all you want to do is move some data between systems through import and export. T...
Enterprises run on data, so it’s no surprise that big data – and in particular, big data platform Hadoop – are today’s enterprise software battleground. This week’s news that Hadoop vendor Hortonworks filed their S1 with the SEC, indicating their intent to go public, ratchets this battle into high gear.
Yet, while Hortonworks and its primary competitors Cloudera and MapR are at the center of the skirmish, this battle is over more than which platform is better. Hadoop is open source, which means it’s free to use, and furthermore, anybody is welcome to contribute to its code base. It’s up to ...
The pace of innovation in such big data-driven targeting technology is advancing unabated. There is so much noise in today’s omnichannel world that anything a marketer can do to get your attention is welcome – and furthermore, the more information they can collect about you, the better. For the marketer, big data mean big cha-ching.

What does the data landscape look like at Facebook with its 1.3 billion users across the globe? They classify small data referring to OLTP-like queries that process and retrieve a small amount of data, usually 1-1000 objects requested by their …
The global village, mobile devices, online marketplaces, social networks, and on-demand entertainment all have a part to play. People all over the world are increasing the time they spend in the virtual world. They’re buying, selling, sharing, studying, developing apps, hanging out in social networks, and starting to use digital currencies that bypass traditional banking.
Alongside these community-driven ideas, we are also seeing enormous change in business to business relationships. Cloud computing enables any size business to obtain and manage big-business manufacturing, warehousing, market...
The Internet of Things could get out of control pretty fast. We’re still pretty far from self-aware homes trying to procreate, but as Gigaom Research analyst Craig Foster noted in his recent report on IoT security, the dangers are already very real. Take a look at the maritime industry. Earlier this yea, hackers tilted and...
In summary, SnapLogic modernizes each element of ELT for today’s modern, cloud-centric, Big Data world. Instead of traditional extraction of structured data, SnapLogic allows for diverse queries across the full variety of data types and structures by streaming all data as JSON documents. Instead of simplistic, point-to-point loading of data, SnapLogic offers elastic, horizontally scalable Pipelines that hide the underlying complexity of data integration from the user. And within Hadoop, Hadooplexes simplify the distribution of YARN-based MapReduce algorithms, allowing users to treat the Hadoop...
I returned from re:Invent last night after three days of what was probably one of the most memorable and impactful trade shows I’ve ever attended. Period.
More than 1500 attendee applicants were refused. The show was packed. This time with more enterprise IT leaders than one might imagine, with most fully committed to getting on Amazon AWS.
The attendee drumbeat at our booth was relentless: “We want to move to AWS.”
My comment to press and analysts at each briefing: It is clear that re:Invent 2014 is more than a typical trade show; it will be remembered as the point at which Amazon d...
Today, all the discussion on Big Data centers around “static data” in a data lake (old Data Warehouse) accessed by BI tools or SQL on Hadoop (Hawk, Impala) or Map/Reduce algorithms (MapR) for analysis. This is looking at historical data and finding trends. Some new tools are trying to provide predictive analysis based on past trends. This area deals with mostly the volume and variety aspect of Big Data, but not the velocity or for “data in motion”.
The term “Fast Data” is applied to data that is in motion. This component is getting more and more significant as there is a constant streaming ...
OK all you techies, time to go back to English class. The word “data” is the plural of “datum.” If you use either word improperly, I’ll […]
Recent studies have shown that over two thirds of CIOs have difficulty balancing the time and resources needed in order to drive both business innovation and operational excellence. IT services teams in mid-sized organizations have so much to do that it’s difficult to prioritize. Maintaining existing operational effectiveness takes a significant portion of the available resources. Add to that new IT projects and upgrades and it becomes even more difficult to participate in business innovation efforts. Once you add the support of new technologies such as cloud services, mobile device management...
