Now is the age of information analytics. We have (very arguably) reached a point where the insight arising from data analytics can be applied to almost every aspect of a company, in every business vertical.
But what shape should that analytics be? Increasingly we talk about embedded analytics, but what do we mean? Should we be embedding analytics inside a) applications themselves, or should we b) look to embed analytics as business rules inside complete corporate processes – or should it be both?| By Elizabeth White | Article Rating: |

Choosing #OpenStack for Security and Sovereignty
Leysin American School is an exclusive, private boarding school located in Leysin, Switzerland. Leysin selected an OpenStack-powered, private cloud as a service to manage multiple applications and provide development environments for students across the institution.
Seeking to meet rigid data sovereignty and data integrity requirements while offering flexible, on-demand cloud resources to users, Leysin identified OpenStack as the clear choice to round out the school's cloud strategy. Additionally, the school sought a partner to provide OpenStack infrastructure deployment and operations expertise. They ultimately selected Blue Box's Private Cloud as a Service, powered by OpenStack, leveraging Blue Box's Zurich, Switzerland data center.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Myles Steinhauser, a Software Development Engineer at Blue Box Group, will discuss why they chose private cloud as a service powered by OpenStack and provide an overview of why this deployment option might be attractive to other educational institutions and companies that are hyper-focused on securing student, customer, patient or member data. He'll also dive into the details of the deployment.
Speaker Bio:
Myles Steinhauser is a Software Development Engineer at Blue Box Group. Based in Framingham, Massachusetts, he is addicted to uptime. Focused on designing, implementing and operationalizing OpenStack-powered hosted private clouds at Blue Box, Myles knows how to make configurating, scaling, and maintaining OpenStack clusters less painful.

DevOps: Disruptive but Essential in a Cloud Computing Universe
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo--to be held November 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the heart of Silicon Valley--will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.
DevOps Summit content doubled from a single track in New York to two simultaneous tracks: "Dev" Developer Focus and "Ops" Operations Focus.
Join DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann and Host Alan Shimel, November 4-6 for three days of intense DevOps discussion and focus.
We'll see you in Santa Clara! See you in November!

In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Todd Greene, Founder & CEO of PubNub, will discuss the top 10 challenges in securing IoT communications that, unsolved, render it impossible to deliver a secure IoT rollout. Learn the requirements for a ubiquitous, secure, bi-directional communication protocol for IoT. Specific design patt...
Enthusiasm for the Internet of Things has reached an all-time high. In 2013 alone, venture capitalists spent more than $1 billion dollars investing in the IoT space. With “smart” appliances and devices, IoT covers wearable smart devices, cloud services to hardware companies. Nest, a Google company, detects temperatures inside homes and automatically adjusts it by tracking its user’s habit. These technologies are quickly developing and with it come challenges such as bridging infrastructure gaps, abiding by privacy concerns and making the concept a reality. These challenges can’t be addressed w...

Microservice architectures are the new hotness, even though they aren't really all that different (in principle) from the paradigm described by SOA (which is dead, or not dead, depending on whom you ask).
One of the things this decompositional approach to application architecture does is encourage developers and operations (some might even say DevOps) to re-evaluate scaling strategies. In particular, the notion is forwarded that an application should be built to scale and then infrastructure sh...
We have built our new Community Pack technology as a way for small or large communities to share methods to extract the important information generated by their systems and technology.
Since the announcement of Docker approximately 18 months ago there has been an explosion of new technology in this space. Although the list is becoming very long, here I will outline five evolving Docker-related technologies that are driving the direction that cloud technology is going.
1. Kubernetes
At Dockercon this summer Google's VP of Infrastructure, Eric Brewer, announced Kubernetes, which provides a way to orchestrate a collection of Docker containers across a cluster of machines. It is...
You don't necessarily get 2x the value from your logs when your volumes double. Value is more aligned with the analysis and trends you can extract from your data.
It's no secret that log data is quickly becoming one of the most valuable sources of information within organizations. There are open source, on-premise, and cloud-based solutions to help you glean value from your logs in many different ways.
Largely, organizations use logs for debugging during development, for monitoring and trouble...
Operationalization (which is really hard to say, go ahead - try it a few times) is a concept that crosses the lines between trends and technologies. Both SDN and DevOps share the notion of "operationalization" as a means to achieve the goal of aligning IT with business priorities, like that of accelerating time to market for all important applications.
But what does it really mean to operationalize the network, or app deployments, or really, anything?
Operationalization is a lot like DevOps ...
Demonstrating the value of any tool can be tricky. There’s no “12 Step Program” you can follow to guarantee success. It’s not like trying to quit smoking or lose weight. There’s proven data spread over years of research showing how to do those things. In this article I will talk about some successes and roadblocks I’ve encountered demonstrating the value of Dynatrace within our organization.
Who am I? I am a Systems Engineer with a focus on application performance for a leading insurance compan...
Our expectations for buying all sorts of consumer goods has gone through a radical transformation we now take for granted. Why should we not expect this same level of service from IT businesses? We accept the status quo for how software delivery exists today but would reject it without hesitation if it were applied to pretty much any other online consumer experience.
Take pizza delivery as an example. Fifteen years ago ordering a pizza meant trying to choose an item from a grease-stained menu s...
JSON, short for JavaScript Object Notation, continues to gain momentum in our increasingly connected world. Reading this primer will give you a baseline understanding so you can start having intelligent conversations about the pros and cons of using JSON with your team.
Contrary to its naming convention, JSON is a language-independent data exchange format that enables us to quickly and easily share information between all of our systems and devices, regardless of technology. In the subsequent s...
Although the concepts of continuous delivery are well known, organizations with existing applications looking to implement CD still have a lot to consider.
Customer demands aren't the only thing pushing development and operations teams into more frequent software releases. It is also need for quicker feedback on product quality, the desire to reduce bottlenecks in operations teams, and the goal to utilize less overhead on projects.
The concepts and spirit of continuous delivery are well known....
The Smart Home concept is a subset of the Internet of Things(IoT). The core idea is to connect “things” (digital devices) to each other to facilitate communication, feedback, and alerting. In essence connecting the physical world with the digital world. We are installing new sensors and actuators into everyday devices that is leading to new IoT and Smart Home services by integrating existing solutions and technologies.
As we look at enterprises adopting DevOps (yes, enterprises are adopting DevOps, in droves), the question regarding outsourcing always comes up. Many (read: most) enterprises have at least some of their application delivery or IT operations outsourced to an external vendor. This may be the traditional ‘offshoring’ where work is offloaded to an external, offshore […]
Putting on a rock show is like piloting the Millenium Falcon – it’s simultaneously the fastest ship in the galaxy while being a “piece of junk.” The stage lights are so hot you start to sweat immediately, hoping those Jager-bombs are escaping through your pores and delaying the impending requirement for that bathroom break. Things are loud and confusing – you can never factor in the ambient noise from the crowd during sound check. The monitors aren’t as loud as you needed them to be, and you ...
So exactly how do you kick start a DevOps strategy? For example, say your organization is tied down to a very sequential, but cumbersome Waterfall approach to software development that is wasting precious dollars and hindering productivity? In the following we’ve outlined some strategy tips that every business leader will need to consider as they start down the path of DevOps adoption.
Whatever steps your organization takes on the DevOps path of rolling out software faster and more effectively ...
This year like last year, XebiaLabs polled Fortune 1000 companies in banking, manufacturing, healthcare, government and IT, interviewing DevOps teams and everyone from QA to C-level suites. More than 1,000 people were asked to share their perspectives on software delivery trends.
Last year the survey found that application deployments fail up to 30% of the time and that 75% of managers believe their deployment process deserves a failing grade.
This year, the survey revealed little change in at...
Go ahead. Name a cloud environment that doesn't include load balancing as the key enabler of elastic scalability. I've got coffee... so it's good, take your time...
Exactly. Load balancing - whether implemented as traditional high availability pairs or clustering - provides the means by which applications (and infrastructure, in many cases) scale horizontally. It is load balancing that is at the heart of elastic scalability models, and that provides a means to ensure availability and even imp...

The Internet of Things is only going to make that even more challenging as businesses turn to new business models and services fueled by a converging digital-physical world. Applications, whether focused on licensing, provisioning, managing or storing data for these "things" will increase the already significant burden on IT as a whole. The inability to scale from an operational perspective is really what software-defined architectures are attempting to solve by operationalizing the network to s...
On Halloween day, let's take a quick look at some of the top things that are killing software testers...
Accelerated Release Cycles
In response to today's demand for speed and "Continuous Everything," the software delivery conveyer belt keeps moving faster and faster. Considering that software testing has long been a thorn in the side of the software delivery process, it's unreasonable to expect that simply trying to speed up an already-troubled quality process will achieve the desired resu...
The goal of any DevOps solution is to optimize multiple processes in an organization. And success does not necessarily require that in executing the strategy everything needs to be automated to produce an effective plan. Yet, it is important that processes are put in place to handle a necessary list of items.
Flux7 is a consulting group with a focus on helping organizations build, maintain and optimize DevOps processes. The group has a wide view across DevOps challenges and benefits.
I am starting to get annoyed with the direction of all the DevOps discussions that fly across my Twitter feed each day.
News Flash! Culture change is nothing new in the enterprise.
Check out my latest rant at the virtulaizationpractice where I discuss how we over emphasize culture and don’t focus enough on business problems when discussing DevOps.
