IT-as-a-Service and DevOps: Competitive or Cooperative Concepts?

At DevOps Summit JP Morgenthal to explore the factors that contribute to dissension as well as union of these two efforts

DevOps Summit $500 Savings here!

It's the age old battle of top-down or bottom-up. IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) is clearly being driven from the top down in organizations. Large vendors and consultants are working with their executive counterparts to change expectations for how IT provides services to the enterprise. DevOps, on the other hand, is the traditional bottom-up grassroots movement that like Linux and virtualization has disrupted the status quo and changed forever how IT services can be delivered. In this case, both efforts are working toward a common goal of agility and speed. So, will one effort supersede the other? Will they merge and deliver together?

In his session at 2nd DevOps Summit, JP Morgenthal, Director, Cloud Computing Practice, at Perficient, will explore the factors that contribute to dissension as well as union of these two efforts and what proponents from each camp should be doing to ensure success regardless.

The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential. The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo--to be held November 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the heart of Silicon Valley--will expand the DevO...

Software is eating the world. Companies that were not previously in the technology space now find themselves competing with Google and Amazon on speed of innovation. As the innovation cycle accelerates, companies must embrace rapid and constant change to both applications and their infrastructure, and find a way to deliver speed and agility of development without sacrificing reliability or efficiency of operations. In her keynote DevOps Summit, Victoria Livschitz, CEO of Qubell, will discuss ho...

We had three quick questions for Mike Kail, and he had three quick answers. Mike is SVP of Infrastructure at Yahoo!, and formerly VP of IT Operations at Netflix. He'll be speaking at @DevOpsSummit about his experiences in integrating DevOps on a big scale in big-scale projects. Here's what we asked and what he said: DevOps Journal: You mention “eventual consistency” as a goal. Is there a timeframe? Mike Kail: It is really a strategy for successful transformation instead of a strict ...
Many businesses are closely scrutinizing the concept of Continuous Delivery and, in most cases, competitive pressure is the driver. CD allows you to deploy applications without having to write endless scripts, provisioning test environments on-demand, and creating delivery pipelines so anybody can see the current status of enhancements—just to name a few. In truth, Continuous Delivery is a response to the challenge of software taking ages to deliver and then not being what the customer wanted ...
The term culture has had a polarizing effect among DevOps supporters. Some propose that culture change is critical for success with DevOps, but are remiss to define culture. Some talk about a DevOps culture but then reference activities that could lead to culture change and there are those that talk about culture change as a set of behaviors that need to be adopted by those in IT. There is no question that businesses successful in adopting a DevOps mindset have seen departmental culture change, ...
Having just joined a large technology company with 20 years of history, it would be suicidal to believe that I can immediately move the entire organization to the DevOps mindset and model. For those not familiar with the term, “Eventual Consistency” is a model used in distributed computing to ensure high availability. In this context, it’s a model for replicating best practices and automation across IT teams and business units. The logical place to start with automation is the on-boarding of a ...
DevOps Journal: Cloud, Big Data, and the IoT all carry disruption within enterprise IT. The same goes with DevOps. Which of these is the major disruptor, in your opinion? Andi Mann: It may well be cloud, because it fundamentally enables all the rest. Cloud scale is why we are now considering Big Data; cloud connectivity is a key enabler of IoT; cloud agility has enabled DevOps to take hold. But in the end, the cloud is “just” a platform, while the results of DevOps speak for themselves--l...
BlueBox bridge the chasm between development and infrastructure. Hosting providers are taking standardization and automation too far. For many app developers it does nothing but spawn mayhem and more work. They have to figure out how their creations live on a pre-fab infrastructure solution full of constraints. Operations-as-a-Service is what BlueBox does. BlueBox utilizes development tools such as OpenStack, EMC Razor, Opscode’s Chef and BlueBox's proprietary tools give the power to do the unor...

In today's application economy, enterprise organizations realize that it's their applications that are the heart and soul of their business. Today, almost every company has a directory that needs to be managed. Spending valuable company time monitoring servers, provisioning and deprovisioning users, auditing, and assessing security concerns takes away from the core competency of the team – building product and delivering to customers quickly. DaaS takes on the burden of those tasks, and allows the team to focus on what they do best. In his session at DevOps Summit, Rajat Bahargava, Co-Founder, Chairman, and President & CEO of JumpClo...
The recent trends like cloud computing, social, mobile and Internet of Things are forcing enterprises to modernize in order to compete in the competitive globalized markets. However, enterprises are approaching newer technologies with a more silo-ed way, gaining only sub optimal benefits. The Modern Enterprise model is presented as a newer way to think of enterprise IT, which takes a more holistic approach to embracing modern technologies. This model makes use of Composable Enterprise framework ...
This story came in from Joseph – one of our fellow dynaTrace users and a performance engineer at a large fleet management service company. Their fleet management software runs on .NET, is developed in-house, is load tested with JMeter and monitored in Production with dynaTrace. A usage and configuration change of their dependency injection library turned out to dramatically impact CPU and memory usage while not yet impacting end user experience. Lessons learned: resource usage monitoring is as i...
