DevOps: Disruptive but Essential in a Cloud Computing Universe
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo--to be held November 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the heart of Silicon Valley--will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.
DevOps Summit content doubled from a single track in New York to two simultaneous tracks: "Dev" Developer Focus and "Ops" Operations Focus.
Join DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann and Host Alan Shimel, November 4-6 for three days of intense DevOps discussion and focus.
We'll see you in Santa Clara! See you in November!

In my hunt for the mysterious DevOps practice, I’ve been let down. DevOps are hard to find. When you find them, they do not exactly do what you think they should do. Some DevOps teams only execute on automation for dev; while others are operations folks with a new name; and still others are internal consultants helping operations and developers (but not actually doing the work). In my DevOps scavenger hunt I have identified a new type of creature; shared services (aka the unicorn)
DevOps is a discontinuous innovation in the way organizations develop and deliver software. And as with any new discontinuous innovation, the implication is that creative destruction will follow. Companies that hold on to legacy business and technology models, without pursuing the ever-growing number of digital market opportunities, will wither in the coming decades, supplanted by those companies which have adopted new ways of thinking and operating.
One of the more popular methods of dealing with not just with the explosion of devices but the growing challenge of dealing with growth of compute devices under management in general is virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). While VDI has been overshadowed of late by newer and shinier TLAs like SDN and IoT, it remains nonetheless a critical component of most organizations growth strategy.
As the technology behind VDI has matured, many organizations have begun to reconsider their initial, early d...

Reston, VA-based Serena focuses on working with enterprise IT to build and release applications. A DevOps pioneer and proponent, the company aims to solve applications release complexity. We had a few questions for Mark Levy, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Serena, and this is what he told us:
DevOps Journal: What original problems were you working to solve with customers when you started the company?
Mark Levy: Serena was founded in 1980 by Doug Troxel in Silicon Valley. Doug still takes...
Through the magic of cloud computing, infrastructure is no longer the long pole in the IT process. Organizations can now set up the infrastructure they require within minutes instead of weeks. However, removing this bottleneck has exposed another; application delivery is the next issue to be resolved. With the ongoing move to digital-first enterprises, companies are now faced with a software-intensive business environment. Simply put, IT needs to figure out how to accelerate the application depl...
There's fog coming to the world of IT. Some people are calling this "The Cloud."
This fog turns everything inside out. It will take your monolithic applications, the guts of which are contained within large bodies of code, and break them apart so that discrete units of functionality are contained within their own process, exposed through an interface for others to see. Complexity is moving from the inside of a few large processes to the outside of many smaller processes.
People are rightly sca...
When I took my operating systems fundamentals course in college I was taught that an operating system provides very specific capabilities that provides users with access compute resources for building and running applications. Over time as networking capabilities and bandwidth increased, the notion of a set of modules that interface between the user and the…

This is part of the ever-expanding "Microservices and PaaS" blog series covering the rapidly evolving use of microservices in modern cloud software projects. Parts I and II introduced microservices concepts and discussed patterns and practices being spearheaded by microservices pioneers, notably Netflix, who were represented at a recent microservices meetup that was the genesis of this series.
Part III presented a list of challenges and pitfalls that adopters of microservices face. This list is...
I ran across this quote a while back, and was awestruck at its profundity. I keep it on a list of quotes that I look to for inspiration. To think that the guy who invented the theory of relativity views the world in this way, trying to distill extremely complex ideas down to their simplest form, is a gentle reminder for the rest of us mere mortals that most things in life are not all that complicated. It is we who make things complex.
This morning I read a really thought-provoking article on DZ...
I just recently wrote a blog about BOTs causing unwanted traffic on our servers. Right after I wrote this blog I was notified about yet another “interesting” and unusual load behavior on our download page which is used by customers to download latest product versions and updates.
If you see such a load behavior you typically assume that you just released a new product version or maybe an update to our agents and many people are downloading it like crazy. Unfortunately that was not the case. The...
Logging as part of the continuous delivery process can help your teams move faster and build a product that your customers really love.
Over the last years Continuous Delivery has gained a massive following with many development teams embracing the style. Companies have chosen (as with many other modern developer tools), to either build their own embrace a hosted service likeCodeship. In the end though, no matter if you go with a hosted service or roll it on your own, the goal is to move faster...
To say that Operations and DevOps will have a new set of challenges in the coming year is a bit redundant, as their entire job is based on solving problems and facing challenges.
However the current and future landscape of tools, technologies, and processes is changing dramatically. While this has always been true, it’s the pace that is problematic. Additionally, the pressure from business users who believe everything is solved with an “app” has moved from annoying to destructive.
Here are...
People often ask how Qubell is different from Chef, Puppet, OpenShift, Docker, Heat, Ansible, Mesos, Kubernetes or some other hip product du jour. Like any comparison of apples to oranges, the answer involves a surprisingly deep investigation into botanical conventions, differences between cultivars and species, and even a venture into dangerous waters of “what is fruit, really?”. Intellectually stimulating, but not that useful from the nutritional standpoint. However, over time it became clear ...
Qubell is staking out its territory in DevOps, with a collection of components, connectors and starter kits that are “self-deployable composite applications and blueprints that showcase a complete technical solution to a common business problem,” in the words of the company. Starter kits include the Java Pet Clinic, a sample Spring application; the Oracle ATG Sandbox, described as the fastest way to develop ATG/Endeca applications; Behavioral Analytics, a Hadoop-based ecommerce recommendation en...
