Choosing #OpenStack for Security and Sovereignty
Leysin American School is an exclusive, private boarding school located in Leysin, Switzerland. Leysin selected an OpenStack-powered, private cloud as a service to manage multiple applications and provide development environments for students across the institution.
Seeking to meet rigid data sovereignty and data integrity requirements while offering flexible, on-demand cloud resources to users, Leysin identified OpenStack as the clear choice to round out the school's cloud strategy. Additionally, the school sought a partner to provide OpenStack infrastructure deployment and operations expertise. They ultimately selected Blue Box's Private Cloud as a Service, powered by OpenStack, leveraging Blue Box's Zurich, Switzerland data center.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Myles Steinhauser, a Software Development Engineer at Blue Box Group, will discuss why they chose private cloud as a service powered by OpenStack and provide an overview of why this deployment option might be attractive to other educational institutions and companies that are hyper-focused on securing student, customer, patient or member data. He'll also dive into the details of the deployment.
Speaker Bio:
Myles Steinhauser is a Software Development Engineer at Blue Box Group. Based in Framingham, Massachusetts, he is addicted to uptime. Focused on designing, implementing and operationalizing OpenStack-powered hosted private clouds at Blue Box, Myles knows how to make configurating, scaling, and maintaining OpenStack clusters less painful.

DevOps: Disruptive but Essential in a Cloud Computing Universe
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo--to be held November 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the heart of Silicon Valley--will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.
DevOps Summit content doubled from a single track in New York to two simultaneous tracks: "Dev" Developer Focus and "Ops" Operations Focus.
Join DevOps Summit Chair Andi Mann and Host Alan Shimel, November 4-6 for three days of intense DevOps discussion and focus.
We'll see you in Santa Clara! See you in November!

The cloud is proving to be a useful tool for businesses both large and small. What started out as an innovative idea has quickly transformed into a vital component of many business practices. As time goes on, demand for cloud storage has only increased with each passing year as more and more data is being stored in data centers around the world. While only 7% of data was stored in the cloud in 2013, that number is expected to increase to 36% by 2016. With growing demand comes fierce competition ...
The trend of virtual currencies is likely not a fad; we’re merely seeing the beginning of what will likely turn into a common practice. Network security revolving around virtual currency exchanges still needs to improve, but once that happens, those improvements may even solve network security problems in other industries as well. Whatever the future holds, the likes of Bitcoin and other virtual currencies will surely be a major part of it.

When it comes to cloud storage services, the options are plentiful. For personal or business use, cloud storage has quickly become a vital element of saving important information, whether they be company files, personal photos, or documents. In fact, many businesses plan out strategies that largely depend on the cloud services they use. With that in mind, the choice of cloud storage provider has become an immensely important one. Many different choices exist, some offered by large corporations w...
Cloud computing is one of the great disruptions in the history of IT, fundamentally because of its promise to deliver software, platforms, and infrastructure from afar. The SaaS/PaaS/IaaS continuum has brought a revolution to enterprise IT, and accelerated another revolution, the movement toward DevOps.
Disruption and revolution are very exciting things to talk and write about. But the topics bring chills down the spines of most IT executives and managers. Disruption and revolution can mean c...
Isaac Saldana is co-founder and president of SendGrid. The roots of the company were born of his frustration in getting emails delivered through apps he was building, he tells us. So he started a company with the snappy name SMTPAPI.com, which as one might expect, featured an SMTP API. He applied and was accepted to the Techstars program, which calls itself the “#1 startup accelerator in the world” and is based in Boulder, CO. Techstars receive mentorship and $118,000 in funding in exchange for ...
The IT infrastructure of modern businesses require a number of seemingly never-ending cycles to track assets. As these assets go through different stages of usefulness or functionality, IT teams must constantly manage the process, which takes them away from other more important tasks and saddles them with mundane contractual obligations, maintenance reviews, cost-analysis and procurement paperwork. What’s the alternative to opening your IT komodo to a myriad of vendor pitches and the scrutiny of...
NuoDB is all about getting customrs to the cloud. It describes itself as offering “a distributed database offering a rich SQL implementation (that is) designed for the modern datacenter, and as a scale-out cloud database.”
We talked to company CTO Seth Proctor, who is also on the faculty of @CloudExpo, about the challenges the company faces in its quest. Here is what he had to say:
Cloud Computing Journal: What have you found to be the biggest challenges in migrating customers to the cloud...
Amazon is indisputably the biggest name in cloud service providers. They have built up a strong market presence primarily on the argument that access to cheap compute and storage resources is attractive to companies looking to shed IT costs as they move from on-premises solutions to the cloud. But after the initial push for cheap resources, how will this market develop?
Amazon has cut prices to their cloud offering more than 40 times since introducing the service in 2006. The way this gets tran...
Senior executives at large multinational enterprises are already demanding that their CIO has a plan in place to ensure that they can effectively procure public and private cloud services for their organization. In smaller companies, some IT managers are now expected to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform a similar role. Are they prepared? To find out, let's review a current IT resource assessment.
For retailers everywhere, it’s a challenging new day. Security threats are a constant – both inside their four walls and out. The big security breaches we hear about on the news; the smaller ones sometimes not. But their impact remains costly to us all. The need for mobility, rapidly evolving technology and meeting growing customer expectations for network user access continues to complicate matters for retail IT – and has set the stage for the increased risk with over the air breaches using rog...
The devil made him do it. Or maybe it's that the devil is in the details for Matt Olander, Chief Science Officer of iXsystems and a long-time contributor to FreeBSD.
A red devil icon plays a prominent role in this NAS storage company's branding and image, which is open souce “in everything we do,” according to the company.

Larry Ellison turned 70 and has decided to turn over the CEO reins at Oracle. Safra Catz and Mark Hurd, both in their 50s, will function as a “Ms. Inside and Mr. Outside” as co-CEOs, at least for awhile.
Serious reverberations will be felt within this highly competitive company and the highly competitive industry in which it makes its money.
Even while guiding his yacht to an America's Cup title, Larry Ellison remained in firm control of the company he founded in 1977. He still has an own...
I guess mobility is important. Red Hat management must think so, too, given the announcement today that the company has acquired the Irish mobility company FeedHenry. The deal was reported to be around US$82 million (or precisely, Euro63.5 million). It's on the scale of HP's very recent Eucalyptus acquisition. The two deals have nothing to do with one another but do show renewed interest by large technology players in strengthening positions in key areas. In HP's case, nothing less than the enti...
